Cable internet access is designed to be weighted in one direction. That's what I meant. They need to keep the upstream usage to a minimum to maintain their bandwidth contracts. You're perverting my words - ICQ, AIM, etc would not be a problem.

Eastlink must have negotiated different bandwidth deals. I've never heard of them, myself. If they're smaller, maybe their providers don't care as much about their up/down ratio. The bigger providers, the ones that have to arrange peering and transit interrelationships and make them profitable, do care, and care very much.

I highly, _highly_ doubt that T1 service is not available in your area if cable modem is. So, sorry, I don't buy it. Maybe you're not in the US - that'd be the only way I could wrap my brain around that.

You want unrestricted, free hosting for your MP3s. You won't even let them require registration. Well, sorry, I can't help you, and it's likely nobody can.

  6. Re:There is a clause in the TOS on RoadRunner Blocking Use of Kazaa · · Score: 2

    1) Cable isn't designed for hosting. They disallow servers, too.

    2) Cable is not the only high-speed access in your region. You ignore T1s and the like - it can cost the same to string up a T1 and sell wireless service to your neighbors (in an apartment complex, perhaps), too.

    3) There are plenty of places that will let you host MP3s, many for free, and all available from your region. It won't come straight off your computer, but that's better for you anyways.

FWIW, free sites do this because they're being abused. There are Japanese warez groups that upload fake JPGs and GIFs, with valid headers, that contain nothing but warez. They have some custom program that assembles the pictures and uncompresses them. I've yet to see the actual program, but I've seen the massive amounts of bandwidth this sort of thing costs.

Really, in a case I know about, warez ends up being about 30% of a "free hosting" site's traffic. (With naked kiddies taking up the rest of the majority).

    [snip]
Please note that Apple does not permit the return of or offer refunds for the following products:
    1. Product that is custom configured to your specifications"

They also have the usual restocking fee for an opened box. They won't refund your money if you open any software packages that come with it (I don't know if any do..)

Go through the order process a few times and watch the final model number - it changes to something starting with a Z (Z03D for example) - this means custom. They don't list the Apple Speakers or Spanish OSX as seperate line items - they're bundled to create the custom product.

Also, slightly related but more or less acceptable:

    "CUSTOM-CONFIGURED PRODUCT
We are pleased to offer product that is custom-configured to your specifications, and we encourage you to review your order carefully. Since the product is built to your specifications, the order cannot be changed, modified, or canceled once your order is in production."

  16. Re:I wager it's point number two on A Linux User Goes Back · · Score: 2

This is false information. You cannot return your Apple Store purchase if you've customized it.

Keep in mind, you customize it by changing anything about your order. Ordered 128MB more RAM with your iMac (built in w/ the initial order)? That's custom! Bought the Spanish version of Mac OSX (also in the initial order)? Custom! Added the Apple Pro Speakers? You guessed it, that's a custom order, too. (They call these changes "Personalise" rather than Custom, but it's the same thing.)

So if you're going to buy a Mac thinking you might want to return it, make sure you buy the base models only (and, make sure you don't buy one of the base models that are labeled "Custom Built".)
