  1. The GIMP is not very ergonomic on Review:The Artists' Guide to the GIMP · · Score: 1

  2. My search-engine criteria... on Indexing the Entire Web? · · Score: 1

Is how well it finds my own home page. Google takes me straight to my main page if I enter my e-mail addy, but this engine only shows me one of the files on my page. It has to do with music files, so I think maybe their algorithm decided it was more relevant/interesting to the average person than my main page.

I think I'll stick to Google.

  3. hmm. on Nintendo shuts down www.snes9x.com · · Score: 1

I think it would be nice if somebody would also create development tools for a console as well as the emulator. I'd do it myself, but I'm still studying C... I think there is an assembler for nes roms, but that's all I've seen.

It just might make an emulator more legit if people were developing and playing original games on it.

The argument that it is a hobby -- and that people merely have an interest in the architecture -- is weak. There are a few dozen people with an interest in the architecture (enough interest to write an emulator), the other several thousand people involved are just playing/ditributing free games.

P.S. I used to have dozens of NES roms that I'd play, but then I went out and bought a few of the games (3-5 bucks each nowadays) and discovered that playing them on the console itself is much better than emulation.

  4. Something new already? on IBM and Nintendo Partner on Dolphin · · Score: 2

The N64 has only been around for a little while.

Does anybody remember the NES? It had an 8 bit
processor that ran at about 1.7 MHz. At first they developed games like Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong. But after years of innovation on the platform, the NES, in it's old age, is running colorful, beautiful games such as Solstice, and the Kirby games which push the system to it's utmost limit.

Also there are the classics like Blaster Master and Metroid which have playability which shines even today, and they were created in the NES's earlier years. (I'm only listing a fraction of the quality games on the NES.)

Maybe this sounds extremely nerdy: but I think the time I spent playing through games for weeks on end -- keeping passwords and making maps.. of a personal journey through worlds where the focus was on perseverance and skill, rather than 5 minutes of cheap graphical thrills (like all these sports or rocket-blasting racing games today) -- was an important thing for building character.

Yet since Zelda: The Ocarina of Time is finished, serious development for the N64 must come to a grinding halt. Innovation in video game programming and playability is dead, and so the only solution for these people is new hardware.

So.. thanks and no thanks, Nintendo.

I may regret posting this, but oh well.

What is with all these people posting about how geekiness has/will made them a lot of money from a good job?

I am into linux and programming, but I'm awful at it. I'm also a college drop-out because I failed most every class no matter how hard I studied. I guess this disqualifies me from being a geek... so I'm just a lowly idiot. I don't think I'll ever make very much money or do anything worthwhile.

Not only was I an outcast in high school, but I was also very weak and not very smart. I didn't even feel like I fit in with the goths.

For a while now I've had some interest in Nazi Germany. Even trying to learn to speak German and find Nazi paraphernalia.
And then this thing happens and I see all these parallels between those boys and myself.

I attempted suicide a couple times, but maybe I should have just taken more interest in guns.

just been trampled on by an ignorant politician.
Is his campaign really this stupid, or does he really think he can get away with this?

This makes me think about the ratio of normies:geeks in the world. Like with Intel's plans for P3 web content, gore is trying (on purpose or by mistake) to sneak something past a geek culture who know better in an attempt to further himself. I have heard from people who have seen the Big Blue Door commercials that think the p3 is a great idea, because they have no idea about the potential ability of the internet/computers as they stand. I fear even less people are going to fully understand what Open Source -- let alone GPL -- means. There are so many normies in the world, and I would guess
that they are buying up computers more than the geeks of the world, and therefore they win a round of "voting"...

This also probably does not fit within the definition of Open Source. (I dunno, i'm a GPL person) I hope ESR persues this, because sad but true; if you do not protect your TMs, you lose them.

  9. jokes per minute on Katz v Taco: Futurama · · Score: 1

I once heard about how sitcoms could be measured
i jokes/minute, and how Seinfeld had one of the
largest numbers of all shows. The Simpsons has a
pretty high jokes per minute rate, but what makes
it interesting is the intertwining of chuckles and
the general abstraction that the show has developed.

Futurama didn't seem to have as many jokes. And
the ones it did have were annoyingly in the
background. (well, maybe I just missed a lot of
them because of that) I guess it needs time to
develop it's own pace (if it isn't crushed first)

of course, the funniest show in the world is The
Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin.. and these
    shows just don't compare. imnsho.

  11. What can they do to a gpl project? on Tetris Under Fire · · Score: 1

This is one of my favorite pet peeves. People don't understand how *wide* their definition of Tetris is. All games from tetris to wordtris to tetrisphere all had to be licensed from them, but all of those games are wildly different in actual play. If it has quadraminoes (?) and gravity, then they own it.

Anyhow, what can they do besides send out "cease and desist" emails? Can't the project simply stop distributing their efforts? Or is that against the gpl? What if the project is using a "totally free" license?

I'm working on a game in the same genre.. the game play is similar to tetris 2 (tetris flash) but there are instead 4 different colors and you have to get them 4-in-a-row to score. It is score-based (original tetris) as opposed to level-based (dr. mario) but I suck at coding :P (i have a working version, help?)

  12. This situation sucks. on Supreme Court rules algorithms can be patented... · · Score: 1

No, they havn't ruled on it yet.. but I hope they do someday and that they squash/fix it.

This reminds me of The Tetris Company and how utterly disgusting they are. Their web page (www.tetris.com) is full of nonsense like, "Tetris stands as one of [our] most valuable properties to date." The company doesn't actually do anything but sit on this patent. The company that obtains licensing for tetris is called BPS, but what little software they actually produce is utter crap. ("pipe dream" etc..)

Looking at the list of games that had to get licensing from them... is horrible, most of them are not even related to tetris in the least, but they have to do with blocks falling from the sky (patent _GRAVITY???_) and so they had to get a license.
