Are these speech recognition engines designed for use with English in mind? What is the status of the technology for other languages? It seems that other languages with far less sounds like Japanese would change the problem substantially and make it easier to have a quality product. Does the speech recognition problem difficulty change with the language?

It seems to me that languages such as English with it's many exceptions to pronunciation rules and it's grammar would make it a more difficult problem to solve than a language such as Japanese which has a smaller subset of sounds and more parsing friendly grammatical particles (post-positions as opposed to prepositions) that mark the word's part of speech.
Does the problem become easier or harder based on the language?
