Social media has been shown to make people with depression suffer more.
I've seen the studies. They are plausible.
All they see is a curated view of everyone they know having a great time. They look at their own life and see everything, not just the good stuff. The bad stuff overshadows the good. They get the impression than everyone else's life is amazing and theirs is all shit.
Then you've got the correlation between an increasing trend in youth suicide rates and an increase in social media use.
Although in this case, she was not perusing happy pictures, but people doing harm to themselves.
But you do bring up some interesting stuff. Depression is a real issue, apparently largely among women, who are big users of social media. Daytime TV is full of new depression meds, and all aimed at women. I think that your second paragraph is exactly the problem. I think the ladies have been brought up with the concept that they can have it all, including maximum happieness. This would a state just shy of giddiness. Or even giddiness.
But that doesn't happen, and it makes them sad and thinking they might have done something wrong. Because all their friends are sooooo happy. So they do the same thing, Happy, happy, happy. But they aren't because they think something is missing. So do their friends. So they turn to the anti-depressants, which as a maintenance drug, Pharma is only too happy to oblige.
I am not certain, because I havent seen the data, but I'm not certain this is clinical depression, more a matter of "I'm not as happy as they told me I would be - and I've done all the right things, and my friends are all happy - so there must be something wrong with me!"
So they get drugged up, instead of understanding that you aren't giddyhappy all the time, that sometimes contentment is more the sign of a happy life.
I don't think - I hope - that these ladies aren't suicidal though.
I wonder how many troubled teens have looked at similar pictures on Instagram and then said to themselves "What the hell was I thinking" and then quietly didn't do anything unfortunate.
Can a question be insightful? Why not - let's get you to 5 insightful, mods.
And for some reason you think this is suprising and outrageous?
I said no such thing, anger person!
For pro-lifers abortion is murder, and consequently, legal abortion is an ongoing Holocaust-scale genocide.
Well, anger person - I'm anti abortion as well. I'm not pro life because there are a whole lot of things that pro lifers are involved in that are just anti-sex.
Abstinence based sex education, which has introduced a lot of teens to anal sex. Opposition to a lifesaving HPV vaccine because it will somehow promote promiscuity. Yer idea is screwed.
I'm in favor of teenagers knowing about contraception, and being encouraged to use it if they plan on engaging in sexual activities.
You get the abortion rate down mighty far simply by not having pregnant ladies having abortion as an option. We have extended childhood well beyond actual childhood, and what used to be adulthood. Both mine and my wife's great grandparents were married at 13. All the sex you want within the confines of marriage. Thinking that teenagers with their supercharged sex drives are going to abstain is stupid, and all the "acceptable" sex education methods have done is increase the popularity of anal and oral sex as teenagers attempt to sat their sex drives and remain technical virgins.
Did you know that the good wives of the Good conservatives did before Roe V Wade? It's called a D and C, or Dialation and Curettage. A lot of women had this problem that needed taken care of every so oftne. Seemed to be pretty much cured after RvW.
You really expect people to go "oh let's ignore the guy who promises to stop the Holocaust, because someone photographed him with a prostitute, let's instead vote for the pro-abortion guy"?
You want less abortions, enable less pregnancies.
Omigawd, I'm really struggling to not call you a dumbass. He isn't going to change the laws, they aren't going to change the laws. They want you to vote for them because all they have to do is say what you want to hear, and you'll keep coming back like Charlie Brown kicking the football that Lucy is holding, only to have her pull it away.. You'll be squealing forever, and rising to the bait forever.
And you, dear coward - have made my point exactly.
If you're the type of person who believes that when kids listen to some types of music or play violent video games then they can be made into killers, you'd probably believe the father's statement too.
Apparently some people are so impressionable that you need to eliminate (to the best of your ability) all possibility that they will encounter anything that could provoke intense emotion. It's as if these people watched the movie Equilibrium and walked away thinking "yeah, but it would be great if we could live in that society though."
One of the most basic, and effective, techniques of persuasion is demonstrating that others have done it.
When someone is contemplating suicide, being exposed to stories of people committing suicide will strengthen their resolve to do so. You sound like someone who should be educated enough to know this.
So skimming through such images probably did not make her depressed, but it probably did help push her over the edge.
I have no doubt she was depressed. It is rather unfortunate that her parents, who presumably see her every day, seemed to not notice the problem.
Yes, I am educated. But Judas Priest, or Ozzy Ozbourne, or Instagram didn't cause those people to commit suicide, and the Beatles didn't make Charles Manson and his followers kill Sharon Tate and the others. They didn't, even if the people looked at images or listened to music.
I am educated enough to understand that people in grieving might very often look for some blame target, especially if they might have had something to do with the original problem or were in denial of it.
People commit suicide without looking at images on Instagram, or listen to Judas Priest or Black Sabbath music. Why do they do this? Often because they are depressed. No need for those three bogeymen.
I might give the concept a little more credence if normal person was driven to suicide. But that's almost certainly never going to be shown.
Want a better idea? How about in the interests of preventing more suicides in young teens, the parents interview with psychologists to see what they might have missed, or ignored, or just wrote off to "a phase". Then compiling everything to see what they might make sense of. One thing is for certain. These people had a daughter with a mental illness, a daughter who was very likely to kill herself even is she never looked at instagram. I graduated high school long before the internet, and we had some folks who committed suicide. Blaming outside things for internal family issues will seldom solve anything. And its so much better if parents can quietly get their troubled offspring good treatment than going through official channels. And we do want less teenagers to be killing themselves, wouldn't you agree?
This unfortunate young lady was not killed over depression or some other personal problem,
Dafuq? Self-harm is textbook depression and mental illness.
This policing is showing a remarkable misunderstanding of depression and mental illness.
Could say the very same about your comment.
You need to go back and re-read it AC, not just parse individual sentences - that's a good way to miss context. Read the next sentence and try to interpret it as anything other than sarcasm.
no images of someone drunk, no images of someone smoking, no images of someone with a cast on, no images of any kind of piercings, I could go on.
When you throw out a generic term like "self harm" your going to exclude a lot more stuff than you ever intended. For example, I might classify a tattoo as self harm, some might not.
Under the self harm definition, is financial harm included as well? I've not seen any women in the board room who have tattoos. I have seen a lot on the Food Channel's "Chopped" show, and in low level jobs.
This policing is showing a remarkable misunderstanding of depression and mental illness.
But it shows a remarkable understanding of how they'll look to a jury when the parents sue. Big bad company hurt innocent kid, did nothing to prevent it from happening to another kid.
Well, like I say, depressed people looking at happy people get more depressed. It sounds like another version of the anti-vaccine scam.
I've had that happen many times. Word's older file formats are really nuts.
Older word formats, Fonting issues, printer problems, where the document only wanted to be printed on the original printer, then changing it to the printer in use caused the document to fly into outer space. PowerPoint files done on a Windows machine transported to a Mac Office machine, and freaking out needing to be pretty much redone, than the same thing when it goes back to the PC.
The amount of time my group spent fixing Microsoft Office files was more than the amount of time for their initial creation.
>I don't really understand why small firms would do so.
One word: compatibility.
Cool story Bro!
Microsoft Office isn't even compatible with itself. We used to get PowerPoint files that were done on the Windows version, annnnnd...... Nope, don't look at all the same. Weird printer business, and font issues in word processing despite supposedly identical fonts. Version differences not working, and often within one platform.
I kept a copy of OO because it could handle that kind of stuff.
Now I have control of some Linux, some MacOS, and some Windows system. And we don't cut Linux out of the loop, so it isn't a matter of compatibility, it's no options at all.
So here comes LO, and the work done on any platform looks like the work done on the others,
That's compatibility, not just saying "compatibility" Because MSO isn't even compatible with itself.
I just tried that and I see that I can apply a style to one sentence, one word, or even one letter within a paragraph without LO applying it to the whole paragraph. I wonder why yours is different.
You can already do that, and you have been able to do that for a long time. I use it all the time in my technical writing. It's very handy when you have things like inline code samples that you want to have styled all the same.
It's called a Character Style and applies to things that are within a paragraph. Use a Paragraph Style if you want to apply the same style to a paragraph or other block of text.
Dammit, now he's going to have to come up with a different reason that he hates LO.
This unfortunate young lady was not killed over depression or some other personal problem, it was because she looked at some pictures on instagram. Hold on here.
I can sympathize with her family, what a sad experience.
But here is the big problem if you are going to sanitize Instagram or other Social media because you are somehow responsible for killing people with depression or mental illness.
Depressed people often see happy people, and become angry or more depressed. Might an image of a happy person be the trigger for them finally killing themselves? So Perhaps Instagram needs to police and eliminate images of people having a good time because if they don't, they murdered someone.
This policing is showing a remarkable misunderstanding of depression and mental illness.
FTFY. And it's sill a minority of the poor people.
There is a trick to getting one issue voters to vote for your party.
The best example I can think of is the evangelical anti-abortion people. For years you could rally them to your cause by proclaiming that you were anti-abortion and didn't believe in evolution. And while in recent years, the candidate wishing to offer succor to this group had to temper their anti evolution screeds to "Well, I'm not a scientist", because anti evolution is on the same plane as flat earth , chemtrails and moon landing fakes. But if you proclaim to be anti abortion, the anti abortion voters will vote for you no matter what else you do. The present occupant is the perfect example. Dalliances with porn stars and paying them off while his own wife is with child would seem to be sinful - after all, I know the evangelicals were in hyperventilation mode that a president got a consensual blowjob from a woman. Ah.. remember the Party of the High Moral Ground and "Values Matter!" days? Good heady times, amirite? But no, they support him in all he does.
Now seriously evangelicals, do you think that a man with the curriculum vitae of the present occupant is really anti-abortion? But if he says the right words - you slobber over him more than Stormy Daniels ever did.
Then again, the Evangelicals have the stick-to-itivity of Wile E. Coyote trying to catch the Road Runner, you have to give them that. They'll come back to vote for whoever says the magic words again and again. The shivering truth is that as long as all a politician has to say is that he wants to make abortion illegal and you'll supplicate at his or her feet, you can bet that they'll make certain to use that Trump card again and again. (no pun intended) If they actually did outlaw it, they'd lose a big wedge issue.
And this is why the party of NO! always falls down the little hole in the shithouse when they are in the majority. They don't really have any actual ideas other than saying no.
I'm also thoroughly convinced it's an exercise in futility attempting to convince Trump supporters to stop voting against their own best interests.
If you want to change their votes, perhaps you could start by listening to their concerns, instead of telling them they are too stupid to vote properly.
Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. I need to take you on a trip through my area. First off, we drive by a lot of 1960's era mobile homes in the country. with a washing machine, a refrigerator, and every car or truck the person ever bought, all structures and vehicles in an impressive state of decay. But they have a very nice 4 by 8 foot Trump Make America Great Again poster in the yard. Yet their earthly posessions remain more dilapidated, seems to be an employment problem as well. And they look worse off than before the election.
Next, we drive by miles and miles of fields with soybeans that haven't been harvested, the honest work of farmers who at one point thought Trump would bring them much largess, having made America great again. But then there are those tarriffs.
The farmers were astute enough to take down their Trump posters.
Me? I've actually benefited from Trump's actions. I do know however that while it benefits me and my money, it isn't helping many of the people who did actually think they were somehow going to make their own lives better by voting for the very archetype of the opposite in the flesh.

Prolly you should chillaxe, homie. Miss me with that whataboutism crap.
Frankly at this point, there's so much distrust you maybe shouldn't use anything from any company you don't have direct jurisdiction over. Huawei or Cisco may or may not have backdoors in the equipment, the point is you won't know for sure and won't be able to do anything in case they do, so...
Learn Wireshark. You'll know what you can and cannot trust in short order.
It is amazing how upset people can be about the idea of others committing the ethical violations they want to commit.
The whataboutism in you has reached dangerous levels.
So anyhow - do you believe that the VPN services or phoning home of that are based in China should be embraced by people since something something NSA!!! Something something 'Murrica EVIL Bad MURRICA - Hulk SMASH!!!!
Funny, but I don't want anyone spying on me. But your whataboutism reads like saying it's okay since read my last paragraph.
