Er, really? I still seeing people complaining about using KDE with nvidia driver on nvnews forum. I am using an nvidia card and planning to switch to KDE 4.3 when it is out so I need to know if it will work properly or not.
There is a significal different between 'work out of the box'(barely working), 'work with all the feature enabled' and 'work best'.
Most Linux distros now can do 'work out of the box', but with several crippled functions, and you will need several small tweaks to solve them. But it is not over yet, if you want to take the best of your hardware then you will have to do serious tweaking. Only after that you will have a fully functional system that is better than windows.
So in short, Linux is better than windows, but you will have tinker a lot with it. After 2 months of googling/fixing, now I have a laptop that can run on battery longer than it does on windows, cooler, faster, and I can use my GPU to decode video (with VDPAU) that I can't do the same on windows. Yes, I still have some problems, but generally, Linux runs better than windows on my laptop.
(my problems is that the monitor won't turn off if I close the lid, and some stupid IO problem, Firefox take 2 mins to start if I do some heavy file transfering in the background, and ionice doesn't help)
OSS and even Alsa have problems with apps wanting to lock the soundcard to themselves. PulseAudio is supposed to once and for all end this and make it similar to X in that Pulse Audio can hook up any audio app and any soundcard, even over the network, and mix them together.
AFAIK, recent version of OSS has fixed this (the one from 4front tech, not the one included in the kernel).
Yeah, most of those critics are craps, but if we treat all of them like crap, then Linux will never get more than 1% of the PC market (though I don't think it need to).
And most Slashdot user won't agree with him, because there are a lot of them are in the 1% Linux users.
I just noticed that the 'faq' pages in the summary (http://slashdot.org/faq/accounts.shtml#ac1300) linked to another page, not the normal faq, so it must be an april fool's day joke.
There is an achievement named : The April Fool -- posted in the April fools story, so if I want to have it I have to post in a April Fool's story, which I doubt this is one. But if I posted here, then it means that there is no real achievement system, so I can't get the achievement.
... without having to install a bunch of dependencies, what about modularity? Both of them have their own advantages, and it is wiser to choose the best from them, not to choose one seperately. So I think they should better focusing on interoperability, that is the best for the user.
For now, if I want to use Kopete on my xfce desktop, I will have to spend 200+ MiBs of HDD, something that I don't want to do at all just for an IM programs.
No, I don't think it was Chinese government, it is the normal Chinese people who commented like that. They have alway think that Tibet is a part of their country, thank to the Chinese education.
First is speed, I have tried Windows 7 beta and I didn't see any speed improvement over Vista at all. (I have turned off unnecessary services and features that I don't use). Windows 7 is more secure than Vista? Vista can be pretty secure itself if the user doesn't do anything stupid + proper setting + updating regularly.
So the only thing that Win 7 seems to be better than Vista is eye candy, UI features like 'bat light' or thumbnail on the taskbar. But I think they are overated, I prefer using multi workspace as in Linux, so I can organize the windows myself, and don't have to worry about cluttering. I even removed the windows list widget on the panel and replaced it with icons box instead (only show the icon of the running programs). I'm even thinking about removing panel completely and switching to tiling WM like Xmonad so I can throw away my mouse, but until I got a 2nd monitor, that doesn't seem like a good idea.
(Yes, I have a fetish for keyboard, but hey, we have ten fingers, better use all of them)
I guess people in China has already get used to censorship, when they can't access something, they won't get curious and then just go do something else.
You might said that no one would do that, but remember the cultural differences, Chinese People has had censorship for thousands of years. Back then, if your name has the same word as the emperor, you are doomed, your head will get cut off if you insult the emperor etc...
Yes, now the youth with influence from the west might do different, but it will take a long time for Chinese to be aware of what is really going on.
PS: I don't live in China, but in its neighbor country which has the same problem.
The article say the peak is when people at 22 years old, one of the last years at college, before that people has been learning non stop so the brain is still sharp in things like new pattern recognization. But after that the brain don't need those skills anymore so it start decline.
The main reason for current conflicker spreading is the usage of illegal copies of Windows and its stupid default autorun policy. The exploit that conflicker used to spread has been released 5 months ago!
Pretty good, you can easily decode 1080p H264 video with a cheap nvidia card. It is also consume less power and cooler than using CPU for decoding, so VDPAU = great for HD video on laptop.
I also find it interesting that VDPAU can help decoding H264 video that I can't decode using its counterpart on Windows (DxVA):)
Depend if he is trained or not. Trained person could even tell the different between CD quality and LAME VBR V0. I don't believe this until I saw their result for ABX test.
(And I haven't trained my ear, not that I want to, I still want to enjoy my ogg encoded music library;) )
How will the computers in those "emerging markets" run Windows 7 anyway?
None. Most people there will just pirate anyway. Well, MS still can make some cashes by pre-installed it in people computer.
Maybe you should try Arch? It use binary package but also has port like build system if you need to build your customized package (abs)

Xfce is using GTK+ too, just not GNOME library and service (bonobo or something like that)
Thank you, I did a test today with each scheduler and it seems like anticipatory is the best :)
I always keep my laptop plugged in whenever I update (actually I do that all the time) :)
And you can use the GNOME cpufreq applet to change the governor (just remember to reinstall it to have suid)
Just the same old story, bad hardware driver.

Ubuntu-desktop is just a meta package, it can be removed without causing any trouble.
And yeah, the first thing I do whenever I install a new Ubuntu system is removing it.

People from 3rd world countries, we are having a big plan here to switch to OO.o here with the help from the government.

A lot of computers in the world are made in China you know? They have plenty of chance to slip something in that is very hard to detect.
Screw PulseAudio, I still don't get why we need another problematic Sound Server. I am using OSS v4.1 and it works great for me.

So I don't think you are at risk :)
