(I'm his brother)
Very funny. I bought the T-shirt so that the donation would go to Debian, and I've only worn it twice so far. What's the point of installing 2.1 when 2.2 was a few weeks away? Besides, why do i have to use Debian in order to wear the T-shirt? It's quite possible to approve of an OS you arent' running -- else how could I choose between various Linux distros and BSD?
And, my dear Windows 2000-using brother, a kernel recompile is a trivial task. You see, Linux gives me the choice and freedom to do that.
On the Mandrake-devel email list today, somebody said that if all goes well it'll be released later this week. But even if it *is* coming out right now, Slashdot should really wait until the official annoucement. Remember the last Gnome / Helix fiasco? Slashdot, *please* wait until mirrors are ready. Otherwise you're going to get a lot of people angry with you.
I haven't had many problems with the downloaded version; a bit light, but other than that it seems like a full linux distro. See: http://linux.corel.com/products/linux_os/inside. htm for a listing of the differences; most of the differences are seperately downloadable. (just like many distros and StarOffice; it comes in the box but not in the download version)
I agree that it doesn't "blow other partitions" -- my win95, win2000, and mand 6.1 partitions are fine. (win2000 has now been deleted 'cause it's so bad)
However, I couldn't figure out how to install on a preformatted partition... how did you manage it?

They announced a beta version of 7.1 slightly over a month ago (IIRC). This is not the same as 7.1 final.

Actually, this was written a day or two ago; I think that I saw it on LinuxToday first. Slashdot is just *posting* it a day or two late.
