    Sort of. It is derived from FreeBSD which is at least unemcumbered by Unix patents.

    That's been my experience as well, with some exceptions. We had 25 really cheap indians working on finding Y2K problems (back in 1999) and they were very methodical and poring through loads of code and didn't cost much. But, we wrote a program which did the same thing, more exactly and much more quickly. The company finally let the Indians go. In the software world, it's innovation that wins and Americans are pretty good at that.

    I can see why you don't like linux, if you claim flash, opera 10 and realplayer don't run on linux. They work fine for me and millions of other people.

    The package I'd advise you to look at, is Oracle-Embedded (which has an open source licence, as well as a commercial one)

    Isn't that Berkely-DB?
    I ran some tests on a simple key-value store and it is extremely fast and the Java version allows you to store java objects and read them without having to convert your data to and from DB fields.
    The problem I found is that it has no network access. If your application is truly embedded, it's an excellent solution and very fast (tens of thousands of stores per second on small amounts of data).

    That and the fact that MySQL's lack of foreign key support was for a storage engine that they didn't fucking own!

    It really doesn't matter if MySQL owned InnoDB or not. It's now all from the same company and you can bet the Oracle will not let MySQL compete with their bread and butter. InnoDB will remain limited. Good enough to get the low end but real applications will have to pony up.

    True, and I suspect he doesn't need the complexity of a key/value solution. It sounds simple at first, but as soon as your application gets any kind of sofistication, it might get dicey.

    Third, PostgreSQL has excellent performance, and PostgreSQL does, in fact, scale horizontally

    For almost all real world applications PG will be more than sufficient. How many applications have facebook or twitter volume?

    I don't jave a chart but I can tell you that we switched to PostgreSQL for performance reasons and haven't regretted it. IMHO Postgresql is significantly faster for transaction environments.

    I do not want them in the business of Health Care either. However, some pretty good arguments have been made for Single Payer (extending Medicare to all). As it is, Medicare served as the basis of a health insurance for Germany, Japan, Swiss, etc and all are well known for their excellent health care.

    I live in Germany and I can tell you that the health care here is truley excellent. You just don't worry about it. If you get sick, you know you are covered. It's one of the things that adds alot to the quality of life here.

    He may have left with a budget surplus, but that was to pay off the enormous national debt. You know, because you're actually supposed to pay debts, not get them forgiven.

    That is also what Clinton recommended but W decided to spend it on Iraq.

    I really doubt his power level is more than -10 dBm which is still really low compared to your own cell phone.

    Except that the antenna is 24/7, the cell phone is perhaps an hour or two per day at the most.

    My understanding is that microwaves do damage cells and therefore can cause cancer but only at higher levels than are produced by cell phone towers. I used to work for a long distance carrier who used microwaves to provide service to remote areas. I visited a retransmission site and the local engineers told me that if a bird flew in front of the dish it just dropped to the ground immediately fried. In other words, there is no dispute over the fact the microwaves are harmful, the question is at what level are they harmful.

    Also, when I worked in NY in the WTC, there was a study done that showed that those working in the upper floors of the tower next to the one with the TV antenna had higher body temperatures due to the microwaves from the TV antenna.

    Do they still have those gas station credit cards? Then, at least, someone stealing your pin, could only use it for that brand of gas.

    Of course, you could pay inside and going back to my childhood, tell Frank to put on credit and he would pull out your 3x5 card and write it down, in pencil usually with greasy hands and at the end of the month you'd get a bill written by hand (his copy was created by placing carbon paper between two sheets). Ah, those were the days.

    They now have very thin covers over the pin pad which then records your pin. You can't tell that the pin pad has been covered.

    5 Boxes cost $4,000,000 and returned $100,000 in five months which means it takes 16.67 years to cover the cost of your investment. I think the boxes need to get a little cheaper before they will become economically feasible.

    My understanding is that H264 is only free to incorporate in a browser and so on until 2014(?) or so. Then, free software, such as firefox, linux, etc would not be able to view it unless mozilla pays royalties to the owners. I don't like other people owning my contents, essentially, but, AFAIK, most video cameras use H264.

    I agree with the FSF that Ogg Theora ist just as good, on the whole as H264. Check out the comparison. Youtube was an is in a position to "do the right thing" as their company policy would suggest and I hope they do.

    Actually, since I set up dual monitors at one point, but found that it was so easy and quick to switch between virtual desktops that I didn't need it and it was a waste of deskspace and energy. The only reason I can think of now it either to impress people with multiple monitors or because you are monitoring events on separate screens where you need to see multiple events as they happen.

    And there are legitimate reasons to use Linux over Windows. Windows is great for games and home, Linux is better for reliability, manageability and cost. We spend more time and money on managing our 3-4 Windows boxes than we do managing our 50+ linux boxes.

    One woman in our company who is a Windows apologist for some reason has moved to a Linux box recently. She's still a windows fan, but she couldn't get her work done on it any more, even though it's a java application. I'm guessing she has a virus.

    The kids I know that went to catholic schools didn't seem to be that extreme. Do they teach evolution at catholic schools?

    I saw an interview with a staunch Christian studying evolution at a US university. Basically, he said he believed God created man and evolution was the way he did it.

    I agree with the first poster, but, the topic did get my attention, even though I'm a nerd, because I'm an American living in Germany.

    I knew several families when I lived in the states who home-schooled and the results were impressive. Not only were their kids way ahead of the average school class material, they also seemed more balanced. That surprised me because I thought they were missing the interaction with their peers at school.

    On the other hand, regarding "politically-correct schlock" content at US schools is a little different here in Germany. The schools are generally very good. I went to a US university and a very good US private highschool, but when I studied a year in Austria, I was two years behind the Austrians. They, in turn, felt their education system was behind the German's education system.

    So, while I think home schooling in the US is almost necessary, given the quality of US schools, the situation is quite different in Germany.

    Oh, and on a side note, it is quite an experience, to live in a country were white men are not actually considered the root of all evil.

    If I download the latest version of Ubuntu from one source or from 50 sources, I still have to move 700MB over the internet. The beauty of BitTorrent is that I can utilize my bandwidth to get it more quickly and reduce bottlenecks at the source as well.

    Banning BitTorrent because some people use it to copy copyrighted files is like banning cars because some people transport stolen goods with them.

    I agree. If MS wants to pay Ubuntu for setting the default search engine to Yahoo, then more power to Ubuntu. Most people will switch it to Google, of course. Word's getting around that Bing filters results to their own advantage with the now famous "Why is Windows so expensive?" query. MS changed the results to show why open source is so expensive.

    One of the advantages of buying a cheaper CPU and System is that you can update it more frequently. I've always bought commodity boxes but updated them every couple of years. My friends how blew their wad on the latest and greatest were sucking wind in two years when I had upgraded to the next generation commodity box which outperformed their old boat anchor. Unfortunately, they couldn't afford another system yet.
