Jesus didn't claim to revise anything, but to fulfill the law of the old testament for us. A huge difference. Also, try to remember, the Bible was written in times that were far different than the present age. What we think sounds totally crazy, wouldn't have sounded crazy at all to the people living then. Example: I'm not sending my reply to this article on Slashdot by smoke signal. I'm using my computer, but to certain people, in a certain age, a smoke signal response would have been totally rational and normal. I would like to know how many people here know why the 10 commandments were given?
Except you miss a very important (and obvious when viewed from without) fact. "Scientific fact in the modern world" is YOUR idealogy. Did you ever really, and with an open mind, investigate what much of "scientific fact" is based on?
quote "Oh, as for the rest of your zombie Republican talking points: When Obama said that deciding the moment when a collection of 46 chromosomes becomes legally a "human life" is "above his pay grade", he was referring to god. I thought you faithy Republicans went nuts for that kind of thing, not against it"
It takes a lot more than that for we "faithy Republicans" to endorse a candidate. And who here is so naive as to think one side or the other has more "talking points". Why is common sense or honestly totally ignored in this discussion, or in most political debate? The fact is I have not been at all happy with Bush, I am not at all happy about the prospect of voting for McCain. I wouldn't vote for O'Bama if my life depended on it. For the record I would want a moderate candidate that believes in the God of the Bible, and has common sense, a commodity I'm not convinced either candidate has. In my opinion, the last two presidents that had a lot of common sense were Reagan and Clinton. Both believed in God and the Bible, and I feel made good sensible decisions most of the time.
I certainly don't have every answer. If I live to be 100 I'll still be learning. An outstanding example, that relates to this rather difficult facet of Scripture, is the woman who was caught "in the very act of adultery", and was presented to Jesus. He drove away her accusers, and said "I don't condemn you, go and sin no more", meaning for her to stop committing adultery. She was liable for death by stoning, but Jesus Himself chose to offer her grace, instead of death. So often we see, in the Bible, grace offered when punishment could have been handed out. Two of my best friends are gay (one is HIV positive) and my nephew is gay. In a sense you could say I'm anti-gay, but certainly not "anti-my friends", or "anti-my nephew". I love them. They are wanting out of their lifestyles because they say it makes them feel "like crap" to live that way, though. So I'm anti-gay because being gay so often leads to people being very unhappy, when the truth is told. And the Bible does say homosexuality is an abomination to God. That sounds pretty serious. However, the Bible makes it very clear people don't "get saved" by being perfect. They are saved "by grace" (there's that word again) by simply believing Jesus died to pay the penalty for all of their sins. If the Bible is true, and I believe it is, no one will go to hell for being gay, but for not believing Jesus paid for all their sins. I definitely believe there were very precious few parents who would have availed themselves of the opportunity to stone their children to death, but instead chose grace and forgiveness for them. Beyond this, I would like to say, it's so-called Christians who give God a bad name, so to speak. It's so-called Christians that will collect near abortion clinics and harrass the women entering the clinic. If we Christians aren't going to adopt some unwanted children, and lovingly help and counsel unwed mothers, then we certainly have no right to condemn women seeking abortion. That's one example, and there are many others, where people that call themselves Christians are responsible for driving people away from God and the Bible. Sadly, it seems that about roughly one-fourth of people who say they are Christians really are. It seems the other three-fourths do more hating than loving. They are the hypocrites Jesus mentioned often in the Bible. Since slashdot probably isn't meant for this type of discussion, anyone that wants to talk more about God, the Bible, or even linux or other things can email me at dennys49@gmail.com.
If this highly questionable bit of juvenile dialog ever really took place, you must have stumbled upon a very ill-informed Christian that couldn't easily have turned such a conversation to his favor. Or he felt sorry for you. He may not have been "cursing" as he walked away, but praying for you. You wouldn't understand it now, but the old testament laws are meant to be a sharp contrast to new testament grace. Again, if the encounter ever took place with the man you mention, he simply would have thought you were some kind of a nut for not knowing that. And you would have looked very foolish.
Where did you ever get the idea Creationists don't believe dinosaurs existed; and you believe Christians think "satan planted dinosaur bones"? You guys are really amusing! I hope you're trying to be amusing, and that you're not that misinformed. There is absolutely no conflict in being a Christian and believing dinosaurs existed.
I'm still waiting to see the "proof" of evolution that many people claim exists...out of either innocent ignorance of the facts, or intentional distortion of the truth. Surely one of you can provide a few links to some of this supposedly abundant "proof". If you, IgnoramusMaximus, have "observed the process of evolution", as you claim, then please, by all means, share some of the details of your unique experience.
I had the same flashplayer problems with Mandriva 2008.1. YouTube videos constantly crashing in Firefox 3.0, etc. I uninstalled libflashsupport, which was automatically included in Mandriva, and installed the new flashplayer 10 beta. No more crashes at all. On my wife's laptop, all I did was uninstall libflashsupport, and left her Firefox 2.0 and flashplayer 9 intact, and it seemed to eliminate the crashing, as well. I, too, had almost given up on finding a solution. This definitely works on Mandriva, at least.
I believe I replied to the person expecting a child, and I quoted your comments in my reply to them. And time WILL tell. When your time and my time on earth is over. And where does the Bible say sex is evil/dirty? And what is some of the evidence in favor of atheism/lack of evidence for Christianity? What, in your opinion, would be a proper way to refer to atheism? Belief system? Theory of...something? And why are atheists so reluctant to admit they've adopted some ideas/beliefs about the existence of this universe, and your own existence, and that you call it atheism. I believe the world atheism means something like "away from god" or "against god", right?
Anyhow, you're allowed to have your own beliefs, just as Christians and others are. Don't be afraid to call it a religon. It has to be something, doesn't it?
Let me reply, as a Christian, to hopefully help balance some other comments, such as "I think religon is garbage, so when raising your kid, raise them atheist. I don't want you filling your kid's head with fairy tales and myths". Of course, athesiam is a religon, and to me it's the religon containing fairy tales and myths. Time will tell which of the many religons is the true one. And it wll only be one that is true, I'm sure. That having been said, I think you're showing a healthy level of concern for your new child. My opinion is that sex is normal, healthy, great, etc. Of course, in a free society, the natural desire for sex will be exploited commercially. Indeed, it is the parents' job to guide their children as they see fit. I've never understood why so many parents teach their kids that sex is dirty, forbidden, and something to be ashamed of, yet expect them to have a happy marriage when they grow up. I think the key is moderation, as the Bible says, "be moderate in all things". I have no idea why so many Christians don't take that Biblical advice.
I think the real challenge in parenting, and I wish you success, is not so much controlling what your child views, as it is teaching him/her how to view these things in a healthy manner.
Perhaps you've lost focus by being too close to the military all your life. Maybe you need to step back and take a look. Of course, the "noble heroes of freedom" are normal people, often normal kids. It wouldn't lessen my respect for them at all to see them "drunkenly hitting on 16-year-old girls". I really don't understand the point you're trying to make.
A very small percentage of Christians believe the earth is only 6,000 years old, yet that's all most of you harp on. Perhaps you, yourselves, do provide some evidence of unintelligent design. I'll have to consider it.
Finally someone who has the verifiable facts that the Bible isn't true. Please share them with me. I've waited a long, long time for a person of your intellect to FINALLY disprove the Bible. And very few Christians think the world is only 6,000 years old, including myself, and nowhere does the Bible give the age of the earth.
Your definition of evolution neither conflicts with nor endorses creationism. i see nothing in your explanation, as a Bible-believing Christian, to take issue with. The evolution usually discussed, according to my observations, involves the monkey becoming man, dinosaurs becoming birds scenarios. I certainly enjoy discussions of this type, but wonder how and why proponents of the "theory of evolution" seem to think it has been proven; that it's no longer a theory. But you're talking a totally different type of evolution, that I have no issue with.
And still waiting for the first item of proof that evolution happened. I know you think it's been proven, but it hasn't. Post us all a link to one actual document that proves evolution happened. And PLEASE refrain from saying things like "Everybody knows evolution has been proven", etc, etc, etc. It takes a lot more faith to believe nothing created everything, that to believe someone or something created everything. None of you would believe a paper clip created itself, but you easily believe the universe, and everything in it, created itself. You are amusing, though.
Hmmm, what type of bible are you reading? The Bible (King James, NIV, etc.) gives no hint how old the earth or universe is. Get some facts, instead of believing the speculation of some Christians.

Funny, but well said.

It's not possible for anyone to "burst my bubble" about what happens after death. They don't know either. And once they do know, they can't tell us.
