A few months ago I moved from The Netherlands to Spain, also to be with my S.O. I also used the internet to gather information about the best way to move, and I found tons of good quality sites. Unfortunately they are of little use for you, since my situation was completely different, but one might help you: I found the sites of the embassy's of great help. They gave more information than I expected: links to companies to ship your personal belongings, addresses of Dutch clubs in Spain, etc. As for moving, I decided to move as little stuff as possible and left most of my belongings in Holland. I can suggest the same to you! After all, how long ago did you buy that sofa? One last note: Before I moved over I first looked for a job. Having a job makes all the paperwork a lot easier to do!
Most moms and sisters have exactly the same problem with Windows! I used to help some people out with their WinProblems, but in the end I got really tired of having to show up every time to install a simple antivirus update. Moms and sisters dont read messages on the screen, they _always_ click on 'No' or 'Cancel' so the message dissapears and their problem (namely the pop-up screen) dissapears. Youre right, they cannot go to the shop and buy new software. But the moms and sisters I know, never went to the shop. They asked me to do it, so i could immediately install it. As another reader already said: Linux at least has SSH to do the updates remotely.
The Euro also uses physical properties, which the blind can use. Besides the size and thickness, every coin has a different edge. I have been told that the blind (once used to these coins) have no problems determining the value. Besides that, a small device (credit card size) has been developed to measure the coin and give its value in braille.
Since most hard disks are used in desktop PCs and most PCs run Windows, I guess that about 90% of all files out there are Microsoft binaries! We are living in the dark age right now!
Not only is it stunningly beautiful, its specs are also remarkable: 3 cpm (cups per minute) with a CPU (Coffee Processing Unit) at 50 HZ!! Of course the coffee cache helpd a lot gaining this speed...
Other SGI case hacks include the rOctane, and I also remember a SGI fridge.
According the the information on their site, 50+ of the 260 employees are Ph.Ds. Furthermore, in the bios of some of the people involved (including Craig Silverstein) appears that they are currently on leave from the university.
Quite impressive that this robot learned in just 3 months the same trick as this 9 months old puppy! At this speed of learning within a few years he might be ready for a solo trip around the world...
Its indeed one of the bots ("living robots") from the Magna show. You can find more information here , but certainly not the details you want. All that they say is that the bots use a neural network.

Buying Unix?

In all the reactions I have read so far, I only see comments about how wonderful UNIX is and that this specific department should shift. However, I think that the boss DOES have a big point. The fact that SUN has great service does not mean that this server and its applications are supported. And the fact that you might know somebody who might also be able to support the machines doesnt sound like a solid solution to me. I would suggest focussing on the support side than on the hardware/OS side. I think your boss trusts your opinion enough to agree that SUN tecnically offers the best solution. What you need to do is to write a proposal about how you are going to find and involve the others, train them and form a support TEAM. Because only a team is able to ensure support. Of course, if you calculate the costs of all this, it might be more than the costs of a Windows box, but for this money youll have a hell of a box and subsequent servers will be a lot cheaper.
The acknowledgements in the Technet article do not only mention eEye and @stake. Entrust, Zenomorph, LAC SNS and Jubii A/S are also mentioned. In total they account for 7 bugs. This leads to the simple conclusion that Microsoft has detected 3 of the 10 bugs themselves!
I have no doubt that there is plenty of good connectivity in the neighbourhood. I was only remarking that the current state of technology still requires physical access to the hardware, and therefore limits the geographical location.
Europe would not make sense. ???????????? Can somebody explain me whats wrong with Europe??? There are lots of very good data centers in Europe. And what exactly is population-bandwidth?????
The fact that such a big world-wide project is bound to be hosted near Austin shows that computing technology still has a long way to go...

It is in fact the method used by a lot of people nowadays. But this method is not very portable. I cant access my information from any place I want. Furthermore, I will need another macro tool for every platform I am using (Windows, Linux, Palm, WAP, Java,...).
A better sollution will be a universal portable small device (credit card?) containing all data. Off course the reader of this device is generally available, connected to any kind of hardware.
It also contains a method for specifying which data is available to which services. E.g. my medical record can only be read by the staff of the ambulance, and not by a company who needs my billing address for a purchased item.

The first part of your story sounds really good! That is how IT should be used; serving us in any possible way!
Just like you, I am also concerned with my personal information. If information is to be stored in one location, that location better be under control of an independend body! I dont trust Microsoft (or any other company) a lot in this matter.
Is it really true that Google is taking its next step on its way to even bigger success? Or do they realize that they cannot continue like this forever (giving exelent stuff away for free).
The first step is offering additional services for paying customers. After this initial step, too many companies made the mistake asking money for their basic services and thereby losing their broad support.
Lets cross our fingers for Google.
I dont think that google should implement such a function. The unique selling point of Google is its simplicity. Just fill in your keywords and go! Everybody is able to understand it. The only preferences you can set are the language and the number of results. Everybody is able to understand that too.
But does everybody now what the description data and the keywords of a page are???
I think it will make things too complex for a lot of people; Google will not benefit from it.
