yeah, OSs in general tend to have no plot.
Also, I'd just like to point out that the TT (mentioned in the article) is a designing cluster-fuck. Or I should qualify that and say the production vehicle. It and the BMW Z8 have such amazing potential, their prototypes were amazing, but then to cut costs and vaguely hint at safety they have to change little things and apparently they don't bother asking the designers when they do this. They both now are amazing if you glance at them, but under any real scrutiny have huge flws - funciton follows form - and each have huge blind spots (with he top up), horrible ergonomics, and are designed for midgets (although less so in respect to the Z8).
    fucking midgets.
I refuse to use Mac for the same reasons - it has such enormous potential and could be so cool - and even the boxes look so cool (the cube is cool) - but then they go and do the dumbest shit so that they are slow as fuck and ergonomically retarded (the keyboard sucks and nobody can argue with that - as does any one button mouse regardles of its shape). even if theior processor does claim to be a supercomputer, the OS is still slow - on a linux box, I can click on something and I can get instantaneous reaction (as well as on my win boxen), but in Macs you get this phantom lag time in so many things that make the speed of the comptuer irrelavent if it is going to have little annoyances built right into the OS.
their stock is tanking and it is fine by me b/c I will never invest in them, never buy one of their products (unless it is a cube to put BeOS on), andI will always hate them with a passion I would otherwise reserve for religion.

    ----------------------------------------- ---------

  23. Been around for awhile, expensive on 3D Printers · · Score: 2

When I was making an effort to get into the special efects industry, I remember some places having 3D printers of sorts. They were big tanks (like taller than a person and wide... wider than arms spread), and then there were two lasers on two sides of it. They could then feed the computer that was attached to it a 3D model, it would then move the lasers around and where they converged would leave the liquid there as a hard thing. It was really expensive to use, and very few places used it b/c there was still much time required afterwards to get it perfect (when the lasers converged, they'd form a hard spot, but there was noise in the system, so instead of a point, you'd get a star and after those add up you get lots of little bumps and stuff).
very cool to see a human being built before your eyes though - but usually it was smaller things built. slow too.
all the benefits, slow, expensive, and not all that good. (I should add the requisite Slashdot MS bashing here - but I'll leave it up to you)

  24. Earthlink kicks ass in Boston on On the Reliability of DSL Providers... · · Score: 1

I went initially to BellAtlantic and they had a bad download rate and a bonus of a bad upload rate as well. On the upside they were at least very expensive. To top it off, they were too slow getting back to me (they were switching to being Verizon) - so I looked around and found Earthlink was faster and cheaper.
So I went with Earthlink and the only thing that kept my installation (free) from being done right away was a Verizon strike.
I had problems with the Verizon strike because even my credit card was charged by Earthlink when I went to their site, I really got my service from Earthlink, who then got it from Mindspring, who then got it from Covad, who in turn then went through Verizon.
But I go 1500 down and I think 300 up - in real world terms, I actually get 1300 down and 250 up, but that is still fast as hell.
I used to have cable modem (my dad had @home in Princeton and it was fast) - here in Boston I had RoadRunner and it sucked the biggest fatest hairest dick every - it was literally (I'm no joking!) slower than a 9000 baud modem I used to use. I could telnet into a server that wasn't too far away and type out an entire mail message - and then go get a drink and come back and find the chars still slowly poouring onto the screen one by one - waay slow.
Go with Earthlink - they kick ass - at least in Boston/Cambridge they do.
