Especially when Scotty tells Kirk he also got the phasers working (or some other essential system, it's been awhile since I saw it), Kirk says "you earned your pay!" It is that Scotty philosophy i.e. scheduling: If the job takes 6 hours but you tell managment it will take 12 hours. Then if you do get it working in less than 12, let management know it is now ready. They will think you "saved the day" by getting it working in less time than first estimated.
This article reminds me higher ups talk about what really happened on major programs, as compared to our perception while it was active. i.e. Space Shuttle development as perceived by most (laymen and enthusiasts) during 1970s/80s/90s as compared to later mentions i.e. http://waynehale.wordpress.com/ and http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/aeronautics-and-astronautics/16-885j-aircraft-systems-engineering-fall-2005/
Another example is Sputnik, how did USSR succeed when USA failed? There are two answers from the experts. One is what they said in 1957, and the other is what they said in 2007. Both are very different.
So....... I cannot wait to hear what "they" really gonna say what happened and why regarding VSE/Constellation/SLS/. But damn have to wait 20 years to find out the real scoop.
Yes, I also see this as rich people inspired by what we used to be able to do (send a man to the moon) and now spend lots of time and money on salvaging/restoring things of the past. I wonder who will inspire the next gen of Jeff Bezos now that USA no longer has a HSF that will match capabilities of Apollo and Shuttle (they are "working" on this but damn the funding is tight and the schedules long).
Excellent observation about Soviets and China you mentioned there.
That is I use Comcast as my ISP (no other choice) but not cable. I pay for Netflix, Amazon Prime, and watch lots of stuff on Hulu and PBS.com. I pay about 20 a month for my service.
That is very interesting, I knew nothing of data only service, is this listed in the fine print? I have cable but don't want to pay them more for internet (will cost $180/month for both) since I hate Comcast I'm reluctant to give them more money. OTA tv sucks except for PBS and difficult to get in my part of town. Heck, even most of CATV sucks. But with data only, maybe I can have fun with this new slashdot TV.
<gripe>
I mean really, what else do you expect. Don't outsource design and manufacturing to China like so many US companies have done. Cylon kill switches anyone?
</gripe>
Stewardesses with bouffant hairdos, heavy makeup, nice skirts, go-go boots... but then that was back when they served meals on airplanes. Now it is like transports in third world countries where you pack your own food (unless in first class).
In the book TWA: The Howard Hughes Airline by Robert Serling, 1983 ( http://www.amazon.com/Howard-Hughes-Airline-Informal-History/dp/0312396317/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332786396&sr=8-1 ), mentions in the early days with DC-3 some airlines would have co-pilot serve coffee and food (which many pilots didn't want to be bothered with someone in the right seat). However, these airlines lost travelers to other airlines as businessmen preferred being served by attractive ladies.
because they are politicos and dammit if they want pi to equal 3.000 then so be it. Incredible as it may sound there have been situations like this (sorry I don't have citations).
Incidently TN continued banning evolution in school studies until Soviets launched Sputnik. Outcries were USA falling behind USSR in sciences so TN school boards figured they need to teach evolution. Well it has been more the 50 years since Sputnik, 20 years since collapse of USSR so that "falling behind" argument is stale (uhmm there is PRC, leave that for another thread).
While they want to promote ID and creationism, those are from Christian religions. What do the Muslims think of all this? Why not have some of their theories? Looks like it can lead to some heated discussions.
I see the tagline inherit-the-wind-II, how about a movie? What actors should cast to play the parts? Last remake had George C. Scott and Jack Lemmon.
Exactly. Also note to use Linux, you have to be a computer/systems guru. Of course many Linux users will cry foul at my statement, but then they know everything and know it so well they cannot understand those that don't (and they forgot what it was like being a beginner). But....... I heard Windows will eventually become all PCs using that OS must be online to "phone home" so M$ can keep tabs on legitimate users and pirates. There are some machines I ***do not*** have internet connections, and many people, companies, and agencies have the same.
Does this mean it is now politically incorrect to celebrate Yuri's Night in USA? So far, in SF bay area there is not much scheduled. I miss all the wild and zany people at YNBA held at Ames Research Center.
It's sloppy, it has no "value," it will not win awards,.... and that is how progress is made. Value is he went and built something, unlike everybody else simply buys. He has an idea, ideas are a time a dozen, and he created something of substance and that takes time and expense. During that time, he learned what works, what doesn't work, and what parts and tools needed to build things.
I've been going through something similar of packaging 900MHz amateur TV transmitter and a receiver in a box for field use. Sounds simple but somehow video signal is losing horz sync, it might be some bad connections and it has been a pain in the ass to find. Particularly I don't know anyone with complimentary devices for me to test my signals. Everyone else says just go iPhone, no need for ATV. But they missed the point because I want something I can fully control without subscriber fees, EULAs, etc. Of course to really do it like real men, design a circuit from scratch (but very few in USA can do that nowadays).
Years ago, there was a skydiving competition team lead by Al Krueger (I think), although missing part of his arm and had to use a prosetic (one of those clasp hooks) he was an avid parachutist with thousands of jumps. Every team needs a name, they called themselves "Capt Hook and the Sky Pirates." OK so I'm getting offtopic, sorry cannot come up with a car analogy.
There is so much discussion and yet very little actual studies/experiments/tests/results. Lotsa this and that, people ask for citations and they get media articles. OK but they are all third-hand sources usually with cases of pilot noticing certain instruments behaving erratically but it stopped when four people were told to turn off their cellphones (OK like the guy said he flushed his toilet and it started raining, therefore flushing that guy's toilet will cause rain in SF). Then there is "OMG, PEDs will take down a plane" well then how come terrirists haven't used PEDs? I mean arrggg, where's a webpage or a report I can read from an authoritative source? I guess there is none, it's all sales and marketing. Pop quiz: how many cellphone users know what frequencies (or freq bands) do their devices use? Most users don't need to know but I would think "experts" should be able to answer the question. Temujin_12 had interesting post of using Android phone with app using GPS to track elevation, speed, direction, pitch.
They say about "back seat" phones but I haven't seen those in past ten years. OK I don't fly all the time but there isn't many of those around. I heard they removed these to prevent misinformation and panic in case of another hijacking. But really, can someone in authority give us an honest answer? I can understand putting devices away during takeoff and landings as these can become projectiles in case of a crash landing. If I could wave the magic wand, I'd have someone in authority (i.e. FAA chief) give us a straight forward answer why these procedures are in place (but probably get stuck with a politico appointee with no technical knowledge).
That is interesting, were you able to save the data and plot it later? While at a airport, I asked a pilot what is typical climb rate, he said 2000fpm. I asked what can the aircraft do if not have to deal with noise and fuel, climb rate 6000fpm. One one flight I had my laptop (and paying $10 for wifi) I viewed our flight on http://flightaware.com/ (not sure how accurate it was) while going from Dallas to La Guardia. It was interesting to see where we were and if I could recognize any land features (I could not, it was night and not sure about what cities we were passing). It didn't seem that much of a delay though had to put laptop away during landing.
Concept illustrated from 1959 book, Manâ(TM)s Reach Into Space However. It would lend a *whole* new meaning to the phrase "Smoke'n it down...." http://mfwright.com/spacebailout.html
Typical skydives are from 13K. If you go a little more than double like from 30K, you have to wear full O2 mask (not the cheapie like what falls from ceiling on airliners), and have to prebreath 100% O2 on ground before departure (highly recommended to prevent nitrogen bends). Then if you want to double that to 60K, you need a pressure suit. Though Armstrong line is 63K but probably not much difference to your body of 3000 feet.
So 30K which many been on airliner flights (and a few that have jumped from that height, http://mfwright.com/30Kjumps.html) is really not that high and "usable" atmosphere is really thin.
Jumping from 100K and above is a huge logistics challenge (if you want to do it right and live), i.e. Kittenger and resources of the USAF. Now there is Baumgartner's jump and amazing of all the stuff and people it takes to make it happen. At least now there are better pics and vids (getting Red Bull to release is another issue).
That's why the courts want people to say when they testify:
1. Truth. Of course, don't tell lies.
2. Whole truth. Need entire story, not just part of it (some items may be very important).
3. Nothing but the truth. Don't mix truths with lies, otherwise the whole story gets contaminated.
IANAL so don't use above for your activities in a court of law, unless you are insane like those using slashdot poll numbers to do anything important.
Sometimes I don't know if xkcd works like The Onion or The Daily Show or something else (or all of the above) but it makes perfect sense how wikipedia should never be a definitive source. OK for a starting point (is Neil Armstrong a trumpet player or a test pilot?) but need to do more research (but then many other webpages reference off wikipedia). I guess need to go back to 20th century technique of using the feet and the telephone.
There was a time when downtown SJ was really bad, one time my aunt wanted to shop downtown. My uncle agreed but told the parking lot attendant, "we will only be here for 10 minutes." He was right, my aunt after 10 minutes said lets get out of here. Then there was the big rebuilding of SJ but a lot of businesses were displaced or simply went out of business. Talked to someone whose family had a bicycle shop that started in something like 1901, their dream was to keep it going at least till 2001 (family business for 100 years!) but with the redevelopment channeled normal traffic away so went their customer base.
It all may be simply a paradigm shift. There was time when going downtown was exciting, that's where the action is. There's nothing at home (before people had big screen TV, movies, internet, home entertainment or simply wiped out after working 14 hour days). Back in those days only dullsville people stayed home.
SJ has been going through budget pains. Even cops and firemen been laidoff and/or benefits reduced. There is cost of installing and maintaining such systems which if funded now, can easily be defunded later. I'm not impressed when "they" promote free wifi, however, I found SJC airport has fast wifi (at least the times I've used it). Most airports it is not free and it is problematic. Google has the free wifi in Mountain View though not that great but it's there. Hotels are hit or miss but it seems wifi is like that everywhere. So in long run I have little confidence in large scale free wifi. I think some of/. people can discuss further on throughput rate drop off with lots of user connectivity.
Regarding San Jose promoting downtown, ugh like San Francisco, getting there is a pain, parking there is a pain, I rarely go to these downtown places unless it is a special event I have specific interest. I will then see how I can use public transportation (i.e. park at some other place convenient then use LightRail). For San Jose events downtown like parades or Christmas In The Park, I use parking under the Fairmont Tower building at San Fernando and Market (where KPIX offices are, next to Fairmont Hotel). Parking is $6 per evening and somewhat easy to get in and out. Forget parking at Fairmont unless you are staying there, there is ***no spaces*** even for guests and sometimes no room for those staying there. Like all other cities be prepared for very long walk from where you park to where you want to go.
Speaking of events, there is Cinco de Mayo which I have never been to one of these parades, I always have some other event, i.e. ballroom dance showcase same day. Parades are quite festive with dances and music and looks like a lot of fun, usually done during daylight because in the evenings is when the rowdys come in and trash downtown. I think they've cancelled such parades, I remember one year driving through downtown when May 5 was a Thursday. See lots of people waving the Mexican flag, lots of police cars, traffic is diverted and channeled into one way flow to prevent huge backups.
Yes, it was a direct cut and paste. It was also an email where she dumped her thoughts and not rewrite drafts. First drafts are always horrible, do a direct translations of what comes out the mouth. You will be amazed, lots of fodder for grammer nazis.
That is so cool, I glanced at the pics, wondering did the rock bury itself deep in the cottage? Or maybe its speed reduced to a rate equivalent as if tossed from a high rise?
OK, so when will someone post a Bruce Willis reference or a car analogy?
Alrighty since we are discussing schooling here and just recently been exchanging emails with a friend who grew up in France, came to US many years ago and recently retired. Below are some of her thoughts:
Computer sciences was my major. It was not taught when I grew up in France, and my minor a French teaching degree so that I could teach French after retirement. My education was completed in France where I obtained a master's degree in Math/English. I completed college here to show that I also had an American Degree. Most firms feel re-assured as they do not know how to recognize foreign degrees, the schooling being very different. For example we start high school at the age of 12!... unheard here. Overall... foreign schooling is FAR! superior to lower level American school. In America education only get very serious at the master/doctorate level... (Of course this is my personal belief).
At 11 years of age children are tested BY THE GOVERNMENT, that is under the supervision of government appointed testers in all fields of primary learning, that includes foreign language too which we start at about 8 years of age. The exam that we take is therefore all comprehensive and it takes 2 days: language arts etc., 1 day, then mathematics and sciences the second day. The results are posted outside on the third day. Children who DO NOT pass this serious exam continue school till the age of 15 then go to trade school. Children who pass this exam are considered for advance studies, "the college" till 15 years old, then the university. This sorting out takes place at the age of 11... I went to a private catholic school. Before the the government test, my teacher gave us exams each week and if we did not make at least 90 points on a 100 WE WERE NOT presented to the state appointed test. That is what system I followed... I am not certain it is entirely the same today, but children DO TAKE their studies seriously knowing they are going to be chosen or "discarded".
Trade schools are much much better than what is done here. For example, there are trade schools for hostelry, therapy, cooking, jewelry cutting, wood working for furniture making, art, fashion design, accounting, etc. One can find a carrier even going to a trade school.
I started school at 3-1/2 (ahah) and started serious school at 5 year of age and foreign languages at 8 (English and Latin). One learns a lot in 6 years (6 to 11)... especially when parents are as pushy as mine. I am so glad though to have had "my" chance at education. In my family "family" and "education" was the focus. The rest was secondary. I played with children in school only... I believe I was allowed to bring one friend for "gouter (afternoon tea) once. I played with my cousins a lot. "outward" direction was only for studies.
A study was done by Harvard Med School recently showing that babies ages 6 months understood a great deal of the meaning of words. Somehow, by showing them objects such as pets, bottles, balls etc.. and following their line of sight (special lighting) it was apparent that the child under study always looked immediately at the object mentioned. My son could understand French and English when I spoke to him as a baby. It made no difference... I would say, for example: Vient ici, and come here please, he followed the order. Fun study!
When watching the pilot episode of remake Battlestar Gallactica few years ago, and how Cylons were able to defeat all battlestars and fighters by shutting down all their systems with "virus software" installed in the background (was done over many years by cylon spies). Since all Colonial spacecraft and systems were networked together, this virus effected all their systems. I was thinking if we went to war with China, this is ***exactly*** what will happen. OK, we can argue China will or not want to get into a shooting war with US. Most likely US will continue to decline.
In the TV series, the Gallactica survived because ship commander Adama was an old guy from the old school who never upgraded his systems to modern networked systems. All their computers were standalone systems, much like PDP-11s. Fighters were the old models with much more analog control sytems and looks like they still used Mocom-70 for 2-way radios.
