  1. Re:69% Americas believe Saddam caused 9-11 on Project Censored 2003 Underreported Stories · · Score: 1

Saddam was clearly linked with international terrorism -- he sent thousands of dollars to families of Palestinian so-called suicide bombers. Islamic terrorism in the middle east is clearly related to Islamic terrorism in other parts of the world.

Iraq may not have had anything directly to do with 911, but 911 was just the latest in a long series of attacks by islamic terrorists on American targets.

I just got Sprint Broadband. I live in the northwest, near Cortaro and Thornydale. It does not use phone lines in any way. The put a small (8" ish) dish on your roof, which needs to have line of sight to their transmitters, at least some of which are on the Tucson mountains.

The "modem" they install is a DHCP server. I am using an NT workstation box with it currently.

It is on 24/7, with what is ostensibly a static IP -- although they can change this, they don't on any regular basis. Supposedly.

It is very fast, I have had downloads in the 450KB/sec range. Less than 2 minutes to download Netscape 4.75. Not sure how the latency is, but the bandwidth rocks.

I have not noticed any losses of service so far.

Costs: It is 40 bucks a month, including an earthlink ISP account with 6 email addresses. THe startup cost is 300 bucks if you want month-to-month service, with a 100 dollar credit for each year you commit to up front.

    So far so good.

Are you basing your disrespect for Ventura on particular statements or issues, or is it just backlash against athletic types or pro-wrestling? Before he was elected, Ventura's website gave a much clearer idea of his stand on issues than I have ever seen for mainstream party candidates. I have heard him interviewed a number of times, while he may not be an intellectual he does not come across as stupid -- particularly compared to other politicians.

  5. WP filters and licensing on Linuxcare and Sun partner on StarOffice for Linux · · Score: 1

We downloaded and installed StarOffice for Solaris/Sparc, and it does not have filters for importing Wordperfect, Ami-Pro, or Lotus files. The sun website says they aren't included due to license reasons, and aren't likely to be implemented for the same reasons.

Apparently there used to be support in Staroffice for these formats. Is there any way to download the module and install it separately? Office compatibility is nice, but for existing *nix shops like ours who use WP (what else is there?), this limitation severely impacts the value of Staroffice.

  6. Abuse is likely on Now Police Can 'See' Through Walls · · Score: 1

Folks have been arrested in the so-called War on Drugs for growing marijuana after police using infrared sensors identified 'hot spots' on interior house walls indicative of high-intensity light sources, such as those used as grow lights. The results of these scanners were sufficient to get a real search warrant, and have been upheld as legal searches.

This does not seem very different from handheld radar. Concluding that the police will be constrained by the threat of violation of privacy lawsuits presumes that one isn't a member of a scapegoated group. Does anyone really think this or any other device would not be used in the war on drugs?
