I will also ring in here to say that the X31 was an awesome laptop. I used an external DVD rather than lug the base around with me, and used the extended battery on the bottom.
The T40 series are also pretty nifty with the extended battery and the ultraslimbay battery as well.
This has to be the lamest thing, but unless I'm missing something obvious, this *isn't* a PVR. It's a big box that lets you use your computer's data through your TV and stereo.
There is a terms of service agreement with the TiVo units. Just because the story submitter says he didn't remember clicking any EULA doesn't mean there wasn't one.
Read the manual that came with it and you'll see TiVo was and is within their rights to do this.
Um, no. If the unit is unsubbed, it's not calling. You think an unsubbed unit should be calling in and tieing up lines and downloading software if you're not paying for the service?
I don't think so. If you're not paying for the service, unplug it from the phone line and don't expect any software upgrades. It's not too hard a concept to grasp.
We should be seeing a JonKatz story on it any day, with a followup story a week later including letters from the people who worked at SJG at the time.

All anyone can think to say is "this is old news" and "I've heard of this ages ago."
Well, guess what... you're not everybody. I didn't know about this until just now. So that makes it relevant to me. I'm willing to bet there are others to whom this is not old news.
Chill out and stop expecting the world to revolve around you.
DCC - Digital Compact Cassette. Released same time as Minidisc, and caused format doubt. Only since it died has Sony jumped back behind the MD and started pushing it big time. MD took awhile to bloom because of the uncertainty over which would survive, MD or DCC.
I suspect it's the logo change, which we saw posted on/. some time ago. (I enter this speculation not having read the mentioned article, as it's been slashdotted already.)

But I see nothing that indicates it's a PVR.

The more recent Treks are already on DVD (Generations, First Contact, Insurrection). Soon, others will follow, I'm sure.

I hated DCC. Sequential access? Blah.
Dude!
You *liked* to computing towers with data displayed on them guarded by Penn Gillette?
You *liked* the PowerMac with the P6 RISC processor and the screen that could project images on your face?
You *liked* the battling hackers at the TV station?
Wow.
You're a rare breed.
If anyone reading this ever goes on a killing spree, make sure you blame Kenneth Starr and Bill Gates. That oughta make for a good lawsuit.

Who owns AltaVista? Why, Compaq does!
