Don't forget that him mom probably doesn't rely on Medicare very much seeing as how she is the widow of a multimillionaire, ever hear of Ryan Construction, one of the largest road constructions companies in the US. Yes, Mr. Ryan gets much of his money from government contracts.
An American GI here, I have experienced the healthcare in Australia and England, all I can say is if the health care in those countries is dubious then the health care in the US is atrocious. Why is it most Americans that criticize the health care in Europe, Canada and Australia have never experienced it first hand and just take it for granted ours is better?
And what amazing event occurred in 1981 to start us on the path of underfunding the general treasury, oh that's right the election of the "Great Savior" Ronald Reagan, he of the great trickle-down tax cuts./sarcasm off
I for one have never understood why anyone could venerate a second-rate actor as a great president.
I appreciate your honesty and all but you do realize where those proven senior engineers come from don't you?
If no one is willing to take a chance on the junior guy he leaves the field and you might have missed hiring that superstar that will stay loyal to your company and not jump at the first chance to make a few extra dollars.
I work at my current job for a bit less just because they took that chance. That and I love the fact I work so many different projects in a year.
Go ahead call me a chump for having that loyalty when companies will drop you in a heartbeat but they did take a chance on me.
Yeah the mortgage thing sucks but Billpay sends a check to them, not me. Funny how the big banks and Credit Card companies are the ones that resist taking Billpay direct transfers. Guess they don't like giving up the hefty bank-to-bank transfer fees.
On the voided check thing, my credit actually will custom print me a check with all the details on it and then I void it for my employer to use when setting up the direct pay.
What is the reason for writing a check that Billpay, plastic or cash doesn't meet?
Canceled Check -- You have the equivalent with Billpay confirmation numbers Payment History -- Billpay provides Roadside Farmer -- Cash Doesn't take bank transfer -- Billpay sends the check and you get a photocopy of canceled check, same as if you write it.
Rent Deposit -- I guess gotta be a check or cash and cash for this would suck.
Even better, Sallie Mae calls me about my daughter's loan, and before the call is connected I have to give Sallie Mae my last four of my SSN to authenticate who I am, no way to authenticate that it's Sallie Mae calling me but I have to authenticate that Sallie called the right number. Even better no way to talk to a real person if I don't authenticate.
Remember I said Sallie Mae initiated the call. I could call any number of random numbers claim to be Sallie Mae and get individuals last four, ridiculous.
Not really, I live in America, I haven't written a check in 7 years.
All my bills are paid through a service known as Billpay. All the banks and credits unions have something similar.
Time to stop making fun of us backward Americans and do some real research before writing your rants about us.
And this applies to most of my co-workers also. The only Americans that rely on checks anymore are over the age of 70 and that is what they grew up with so it is kind of hard to change.
"You want people who are capable of making decisions in nanoseconds? Look, I'm all for overclocking the human brain, but to date nobody has been able to figure out how to get into the BIOS, which means either it's not possible or (more horrifyingly) the secret of life, universe, and everything, was built by Compaq."
I see someone else had a co-worker re-format a Compaq hard drive and lose the ability to get into the BIOS. Yeah, a firewall that no one could remember the password to.
Bullshit, it is not the network admins job to enforce workplace rules. That's like firing the phone guy because some manager can't keep his guys from calling the wife too much.
It's a personnel management deficiency not a technology deficiency. You will never be able to block everything that shouldn't be viewed from work unless you just pull the plug.
Except pensions don't have to be unfunded liabilities. In fact most union contracts required the company to fund the pensions by setting aside the money in the equivalent of 401K funds. What happened is the companies didn't set aside the money, or they hired an accountant/banker that used optimistic numbers to project the growth of the funds and thereby put less than necessary into the fund, or corporate raiders (Bain Capital anyone) bought the company, declared bankruptcy and raided the retirement fund with the permission of the bankruptcy court. The corporate raiders even calculated the money that they would get from defunding the pension funds into the calculation into whether to buy or not.
Nice to know about the current cameras, but couldn't they just get some of that software they use on CSI to make the plates readable;-).
Seriously though my big problem with all this is the long term storage and then some lawyer subpoenaing the data for a divorce case or the equivalent. Once the data is there the lawyers will always figure out a way to get it even if the law says they shouldn't.
Quick question, at what point does your sampling turn into tracking?
The hardware gets cheap enough to put at every intersection with a stoplight, the camara is already there to control the timing of the lights. They record every plate going through those intersections and store the date and time. A year from now your significant other wants to know where you were on Halloween, the lawyer subpeonas the records and now the lawyer has access to your location all night long.
Had a work study job in the computer Lab at the University of Wisconsin. Went on more than one date with a pretty coed after helping her pick up and arrange the box of punch cards she dropped.
Now that is a positive you don't get with today's mass storage.
I second this. An average of 90 days a year in hotels, often for extended stays. The room becomes my home and I treat it as such. I have never had anything stolen by the cleaning staff. Most of them probably that having a job is more valuable than the few dollars they can make from a little bit of theft.
BTW always a good idea to leave the housekeeping staff a small tip to express your gratitude.

Rock county, huh need to move to Green county if you want to meet the real right wing nutters.

Now AC you can't be using logic and common sense on Slashdot, that would make for too many one reply articles.
Please give me those four or five reasons you have?
Ain't no such thing as a fire-proof safe. Now fire resistant that is another thing.

Ok a sample of one but it is possible to survive in America without a check book. The GP implied that it wasn 't.
Would be longer but got back from Australia in 2003 and had to pay my rent deposit with a check. That was the last one.

I would guess 10-20 years.

The divorce lawyers would also love to have this kind of information available to them.
Lawyer: Johnny why were you at the Gentleman's Club December 5 four years ago?
Johnny: Don't think I was.
Lawyer: Your license plate was tracked on your way there and in the lot.
Johnny: Really ?
Lawyer: Yep, gotcha.
Quick question, at what point does your sampling turn into tracking?

I think that is what he said. Read the next line "If at the same time people vote pro-spending, government becomes unsustainable."

Add one more:
- the observer remembers the 5-10% that have a nice car while not noticing the ones that are driving a 10 year old Camry because it doesn't stand out.
