    Wrong. Linux is popular be cause people care about in ways they've never cared about the BSD's. People who are Linux users are more than willing to take on the Windows-focused trade rags that laughingly say they are focused on "General Interest Computer Issues" and the editors and so-called "tech writers" which make up their staffs, along with the Mindcraft's of the computer industry. How many of the BSD'ers are willing to do the same thing? If past history any indication, not that damn many. In other words the BSD crowd for the most part seems to like to talk the talk, but aren't really willing to walk the walk.

    With the Windows port of Perl most likey so if Windows had $HOME directorys. With the Linux/Unix/BSD Perl ports? Not so fast. How would you get the Perl script to obtain the root privages it would need to delete the users's $HOME directory if you don't have root acess?

    And 99% of these Virus wouldn't work at all due to the fact most Unix/Linux/BSD users do not operate their systems as the root user, and the remaining 1% wouldn't cause the kind of hardcore damage that we're becoming used to seeing with the new generation of virus that run on Microsoft-based OS's.

    Sorry no.. The FCC issue has little or nothing to do with this case. It's basically an issue of local cable regulation.

    Bullshit. The only attempts at balkanizing Linux is pretty much comming from the Slackware crowd these days and not RedHat.

    These are the people who are insisting on using things that's outdated or the rest of the linux dists have pretty much abandoned. Who is it who whine the loudest about people using the RPM or Deb package formats for instance? Do I feel sorry for them? NO. Noboby's telling the Slackware users that they can't use either of these formats or the libs the other dists are choosing to use. They've choosen not to and now have to live with the results of their decision. The blame falls squarely on their shoulders and they had better learn to deal with it instead of running around and blaming everybody else who's choosen to move on to better approaches to things than what say Slackware is using.

    You got it. The fact that it looks like 99% of Enlightenment supporters tend to hang out on IRC should tell you something about it right there. It's something for the "wannabe set" to play with. I got tired of this kind of stuff during my Amiga days real fast. Sure it's fun to play with for about a month or two, but then it gets old real fast.

    this whole thing is something new. It's *NOT*.
    Amiga users went though the exact same thing
    concering the "Magic User Interface". Basically
    MUI split the Amiga camp into two factions also.
    One faction was was the bunch who it seemed the
    only thing they did was code and run demo's all the time
    on their Amiga's and the other faction consisted
    of Amiga usrs who really didn't care all that much
    for that kind of stuff. I know. I was one of the
    Amiga users who didn't give a hoot about the
    demo scene or MUI either...

    Looks like history's repeating itself all over
    again, eh?

    Here,Here. I have to laugh when reading some of the comments from the rabid Slackware users. Slackware was never as good as these guys claim it was. Actually the expression "pain-in-the-ass" describes Slackware a hell of a lot better. Like a lot of Redhat users who jumped ship, Slackware was the 1st linux dist I used, and was overjoyed when RedHat appeared on the scene. I ditched Slackware and have never looked back.

    Bzzzzt. Wrong. Take a look at the platforms where the most interesting game devlopment is happing these days. It's not on the PC kiddo. The future of games lies with machines from Nintendo,Sega and Sony, not the PC. I haven't bother with playing games on my PC ever since I got my PlayStation a while back. The interest just isn't there anymore.

    Then you won't be using linux because a lot of people who use linux like myself have absolutely no use for Outlook and get along perfectly fine without it. The interest for an Outlook clone that runs under linux just isn't there, mostly because Outlook is a really shitty piece of software. In other words who cares if you don't want to use linux? Nobody really.

    You wish. Linux's future is only beginning. NT's "15 minutes of fame" as you put it is what's up. Take a look around you. Nobody's talking about NT dominating anything anymore. Take a look at what the school kids are running on their home machines. It's *NOT* NT. As they enter college they will bring their Linux/Unix knowlege with them. The only reason NT really got a foot in the door was that people was pretty much only familar with Windows back in the early-mid 90's. This is what is changing and why pro-microsoft people like yourself are yesterday's news. Get over it.

    Of course they don't. The people who really know their stuff when it comes to computers wouldn't be caught dead working at places like PC Week. You might've found them working on the staff of the old COMPUTE! or Byte magazines when they really did cover multiple platforms like the Atari,Commodore,Apple machines and PC clones. That kind of knowlege just doesn't exist anymore in today's computer magazines. Just take a look at what's on the magazine racks of your local bookstore or K/Walmart and compare it to what was on those very same shelves 5-10 years ago. It's really quite sad actually.

    You don't actually think that SGI would be stupid enough put any of this code under a BSD-style licence do you? It most likey be either GPL or some variation of it in order to make sure that it won't be "borrowed" by certain people....
