  1. my $0.02 on Comcast Disables VCR Scheduling In New Guide · · Score: 1

here's the deal, I work for a cable operator (not comcast) so I'm fairly consumer non-partial (though i realize the presence of an industry bias ) I go on between 8-10 trouble calls a day and over the span of 6 years I've probably thought 20 people how to set a delay timer to record to VHS or even DVD-R. in my experience I've put more DVR's in than that in a month. Weather this is because people don't want the trouble of setting a delay timer in two places or having to watch what you are recording OR simply wanting a DVR remains to be seen. Cable as an industry has a right to offer products however they feel they can recover their cost --- because cable (or subscription video service for that matter) is a business. throwing the monopoly card doesn't quite work any more because their are simpley too many choices. For example dish subscription TV service, uverse (or other VOtP services) or... heaven forbid FREE TV SERVICE OFF THE AIR. so perhaps its just me but I really don't see the point of the whole argument. Add to all of that the feature being argued wasn't well received by anybody who I have ever shown it to.

Lax tracking combined with the need for every employee having laptop is a problem with any company. ESPECIALLY when corners are being cut to save on cost. Its possible also that MORE were lost but simply not accounted for in this case also, flowing the same logic. Yet another reason to really look into how your company (or government project) tracks and inventories equipment.

is more regulation what the situation needs? or any situation? I think tighter controls lead only to more bureaucracy = less common sense to something that should be so simple. It's voting, it's not rocket science. its the legalize and "hanging chad" attitude that leads up to votes being counted incorrectly. HOW can a digital system, based on a boolean set of values produce half answers or incorrect responses unless there's operator error... the same go's for paper ballots. as far as the security of electronic voting; I'll bet there's still whole voting machines sunk to the bottom of the Hudson from the 1930's on thrugh the 50's (and beyond perhaps) ... those votes weren't counted... theres already laws that cover tampering with the voting system; so outright banning a possess that might actually add value is kinda ridiculous don't you think? Voter fraud is not an issue of how the votes are collected in my opinion. If were going to tighten voter laws how about requiring an ID at the poles NATIONALLY, how about making sure that somebody isn't voting six times for the same candidate. These are the kinds of things that make good sense for voting laws. At least in my opinion

From what I've read, his "hijacking" was limited to refusing to give the passwords to his boss whom he considered an idiot.

Given that they cannot hunt down a single device on the network, I'd have to agree with that assessment.

MAC address ... switch port ... it should be easy.</p></quote>

If the device is hidden someplace on a metropolitan fiber back bone (say a leased telecommunications network for example) simply knowing the port and the mac address of the device only shows you where to start looking. If the device is in this backbone it could mean checking literally MILES of fiber for the device... not to mention if the admin got smart and knows somebody on the inside of the Telicom provider who could rack up the device in a secured location the city doesn't have direct access to. like a HFC hub or a VOTP hub... that would require injunctions to outside companies; search warrants... extra time extra money. Its not just as simple as locating a device on a corporate network built inside a building or a series of buildings for that matter.

Also with that in mind your assuming that they have good maps of where the lines in THEIR network run... i worked at a state university for two years in the IT department... lots of money was wasted over the two year period rerunning cat5 because there was no map and we had connectivity problems at the physical level... it all comes down to design and documentation; so many contractors are used for government projects and project managers come and go... if there's no intended plan but to "JUST MAKE IT WORK" you can run into these problems quite quickly.

However I do agree that it sounds like they don't know what there talking about; if they haven't even gotten that far.

This happens allot in big company's it usually involves an advertising executive saying something like "so by saying it wont work with 512MB you mean that it might?" and then continuely asking that question until somebody says something like "yes" or "mabey".

Im not saying Anti virus can't be overdone but do we really want to say; i'm careful so i don't need it?

Anti virus software is a nectary evil in todays society because viruses/spy ware are distributed by sneaky underhanded people. Protection (even minimal such as a scanner) is necessary just as a liability (for those in my line of work) to say; hay i tried ... even if it's a vain effort because you know your not doing the types of things that get you a virus. You do not want to be the one talking to your clients lawyer under oath stating "no i don't run anti-virus software ... i don't think it's usefull"

Ok so perhaps thats a bit over the top but just as embarrassing to have that conversation with somebody's son in law after their 79 year old in law; got virus and you said it was ok as long as they were careful.

AV software might be a racket, it may be a waist of resources but spy ware is just as much a reality. and simply because you know (or think you may know , cause can any of us really be sure?). Is not A reason to hard down disapprove of something.

I totally believe you are running Vista without a AV program or any spy ware protection whatsoever... but you may want to just keep that to yourself because from this angle it almost looks like bragging... there's enough people here on ./ who are just enough informed (but not really informed) to try this; just for bragging rights... and the results won't be pretty.
