    Good point, what you say is very true, however, do you think it is possible for the entire (interesting) internet to exist in a similar manner? For me, I like youtube, and I am willing to look at advertisements to enjoy it, but I am not going to donate to it to keep it alive, and I think a lot of other people will feel similarly.

    There are probably people who feel similarly about Wikipedia. The point is there are also people who are willing to donate, and those people pay for everyone's bandwidth (hey, it's worked so far on Wikipedia, why can't it work elsewhere?).

    He has an EMAIL ADDRESS. Email != website. But I see where you're going. Still, better not to get sucked into arbitration by mentioning your reason for owning the name up front, and pointing out that you have priority in this case.

    No, because what if you have a brain-dead noreply newsletter that sends a "please don't reply" message every time it gets one. Then you get a bit of a problem.

    Or they bring out the lawyers and everybody loses. It wouldn't be the first time, either.

    No, you have that backwards. M$ is doing what's worst for its competitors. The fact that it's the right thing for its customers is an added bonus.

    Times have changed... I don't expect to pay for information when I could get it free elsewhere. Having said that, who pays for the servers?

    Wikipedia has no advertising (paid entirely via donations; I mean the English Wikipedia. The other ones are semi-independent and make their own decisions on these things)

    Blame web masters who put the Google Analytics javascript in the header, instead of the bottom of the page. Yes, Google did recommend the former years ago, but it was a bad idea and they changed their recommendation years ago.

    GNewSense is not meant for the average person the way Ubuntu/Fedora/OS X/Windows is. It is meant more or less for developers who want to either A) have a totally free system or B) have a free system as a base for other distros. No matter what the people from the FSF will tell you, GNewSense is not usable by the average person.

    It is more or less indisputable that the FSF would like the average user to use this stuff (hence, they intended it for said J Random Luser. Whether J Random Luser can actually use said software is another ball of wax)

    If group B gets Ubuntu, they have the option of using binary blobs. Obviously, FSF etc. doesn't like that... Though how this would in any way help group B I don't understand....

    If gNewSense was a fork of Debian (whose full name is "Debian GNU/Linux" btw), we'd have heard about it by now, especially given that Debian is more "Free as in Speech" than "Open Source" (hence closer to rms philosophically than most distros). Who knows, maybe he (rms) is just trying to attach the popularity of Ubuntu to his philosophy... but do you really need a fork for that?

    Remember what the goals are folks: giving the user a perceived sense of security and making a simple to use mechanism so that you don't end up having to deal with tons of helpdesk/support calls. On those criteria the current mechanisms are great.

    That the perception does not match reality is of lesser consequence for the site admin.

    A perceived sense of security... you mean like with Windoze?
