  2. There's VoIP and there's VoIP on Yahoo Readies New VoIP Service · · Score: 2, Insightful

When some people say VoIP they mean the equivalent of telephone to telephone communication (Vonage, Callvantage, Packet8 etc.) and some people mean messaging with voice (Skype, Yahoo, Messenger,iChat etc.). It's unfortunate that these two concepts have the same label. This thread is an example of the confusion that results from this glitch.

The transport providers (satellite, cable) don't control the packaging or much of the pricing. You should think of them like grocery stores that have carry everything from Del Monte to get sell their fruit cocktail.

As a DishNetwork customer I just went through this courtesy of Dish (the transport) versus Viacom (the content provider).

Perhaps the summary doesn't do the article justice. It's a summary of someone else's speculation. However as succinctly noted elsewhere you can imagine an Xbox-like device albeit with better security. I don't think the point is that there will be no Linux on commodity hardware but rather that if MS controls the hardware they can make it harder to support Linux. This is neither new or surprising. Win-modem --> win-computer.

People who don't understand why someone might need something more sophisticated often insult or damn with faint praise. How sad.

Sometimes you need something more sophisticated than a pre-programmed remote and you just aren't going to get there without getting a learning unit.

By the way I use an MX-500 from bluedo
after using various small-scale universals and the neo-tech palm software (with the IR dongle). Some people like touch-screen remotes but many of us find them nearly unusable.

Why do most Universal remotes only have 3-6 devices? Why not 10 or 20, say by hitting a number button after a device button? It's certainly not for lack of memory.

Except it is for lack of memory.

Google will suggest Directron's quiet pc page. A bit of searching will lead you to silentpc

which leads to all things silent. I suggest the molex coolers and replacing the power supply and case fans with a Papst (from NW Computers) or Panasonic (from various places, try digi-key if you don't like what you find on the net). See GizZo's fan page
    http://people.we.mediaone.net/gizzo/index.html
for the basic set of links. Just pay attention to the before and after temperatures when you replace things. Some of the more general bits of quietpc gear are now available in the US at

The blurb on the ADV link I provided is dated four months ago but that's not the point. As I said ReBoot isn't anime (and it's not a movie either but note that it didn't get the anime icon) and even though I've been known to watch some Crying Freeman I'm not interested in reading animeondvd or following ADV press releases. I do check mainframe.ca and inwap.com because I'm interested in Reboot and I read /. because I'm interested in many things. Finally, humour is delightfully idiosyncratic but I've never shown Talent Night to a computer person who didn't laugh at least twice (even if they've never heard the phrase ``Elvis has left the building''.

  11. i like logitech on High-Quality 3-Button Mouse For X? · · Score: 2
logitech makes a nice three-button mouse and a somewhat easier to find four-button mouse that is identical (the fourth button is under your thumb). logitech also has very nice software for windows.

i use one because the button activation pressure is low enough that i can use it all day without any rsi problems. button pressure is why i don't like wheel-mice. of course the best solution is a sun mouse but you have to buy an adaptor box which makes it a bit pricey.
