It's farly reasonable to assume that there wont be any major internet taxes imposed as any state will realise the danger of pushing business into other states and loosing out......
I wonder if anyone could clarify this (i'm from the UK): If you live and run a business in one state where there is an e:tax but have your e:business services operated in another state where there is no e:tax, do you pay the tax in your native state?

Good point, your absolutely right, I should have said the Ley-Idiots 21st century:).
I hope you will go and watch 2001 a space oydessey on December 31st this year; that one will be re-released synchronously and in internation 70-mm format;)
I'd just like to point out that the MPAA is responsible for the fact that we wont see this film in the UK for another couple of months.
Its not as if it needs subtitles; its not as if logistics is a serious problem in this day and age: so why oh why, in the first months of the 21st century haven't we got synchronous releases?
It may be the case that there have been many more Y2K problems occur than have actually been reported. It may well be that organizations have tried to cover up to avoid looking like they were the only ones who didn't prepare for the worst.
It just so happens that the organisation which I work for had at least 20 Y2K related incidents occur in the first week of 2000 but we have all be told to keep quiet (hence I don't give the organisation name) I can say this: we are one of the largest organisations in the UK and we must have done damn well to keep information about these problems away from the trade press.....
In cases such as this, it may be worth exercising caution: nothing to do with the usual conspiracy theory, but what if these simple minded government/secret service types hadn't actually thought of the Beowulf as being a supercomputer?
Anyway, that was just hypothetical, we all know that if China or Russia wanted to use Beowulf software against the US's wishes, they would do and there'd be nothing that could be done about it.
I was at home last night, and the thought crossed my mind that wouldn't it be great if I could immediately flick between watching terrestrial TV and web-pages.
Then the sickening thought entered my mind, In a couple of years I could be flicking between TV and Windows er or BSOD. So I immediately resolved to do something - immediately
So I went up stairs and grabbed my linux box (which nearly killed me as it was in a server tower) and carted it down stairs. Next I spent an hour and a half hunting around for my external encoder card (rare kit these days).
Once I connected all the kit up next to the TV, I tuned in my encoder - et voilla Internet enabled TV; just flick channels.
Now until decent web/tv appliances come along, I'll be using this: and it is useful (to me). Just one thing that I would like to point out to manufacturers, a 10BaseT network adapter would be nice because some of us have more than one appliance connected to the internet at any one time:)
Well, the crusoe is indeed a very tiny looking chip in both of its forms. However, it should be remembered that these chips are only every this size as a bare unit that they are now; unless the unit is to be 'hard-wired' to the mobo (removing the possibility of future upgrade) the chip will have to be mounted on a 'plug'.
It can be noticed that the PII/PIII and AMD K6 / Athlons all are mounted on 'plugs' which are then inserted into a socket on the mobo. Have you ever broken up an old CPU and discovered the size of the actual chip: typically no much more than 2x2cm. (I submit here that maybe the PIII 'plug' is a little on the gigantic side considering the chip within:)
Not to worry tho: if what you are looking for is a hugely powerful miniture PDA, a hard-wired crusoe is definately a top option, as for a laptop or even desktop; a plug option has to be the way to promote sales with the option of upgradability
The Linux Documentation Project will need all the help it can get; this at the moment can only be an uphill struggle. Linux software development is undoubtedly at its most prolific it has ever been so as soon as something is documented; it will have been revised (something that LDP have taken note of) It seems therefore that the only way to win this is to increase the manpower available and signup to help...
I emplore/. readers who have knowledge and experience of related issues to get involed (get their keyboard dirty) and be part of the big picture:) Linuxdoc.org has already proved invaluble to me so I will be doing whatever I can.....
I would suggest that exercising caution would be the flavour of the day here Not meaning to defame the offer presented in any way; in fact this has less to do with free registrations at nic.cx as it has to do with the premium ones.
You see, as everyone on/. reads this, many of you feel the need to whip out your credit cards and buy yourself a little chunk of digital Christmas Island:) - but beware! The same time you are whipping out your CC, someone else may be whipping out their packet sniffer - mainly because they know that with a/. article there will be high traffic and more transactions than normal; leading to a greater chance of our parasitic little friend landing himself a catch.......
Im not saying that Slashdot is full of these guys (and gals) just waiting to pounce but there maybe one or two - so just be careful.
I would suggest waiting a couple of days for far better security;)
There, thats my little piece said, now you can all tell me how paranoid I am:))
Its an interesting concept; this HTML, are we the only people who go sifting through the source; just for the hell of it?
At the end of the day, if its readable with the browser; thats all it ever needed to be - is there any real need to go nit-picking? On the other hand it can only ever be good nettiquet to, if you find unworkable HTML, inform the webmaster so he make his page available to everyone.......
If you really want to generate your own unspeakably bad HTML, go to this page and look for information on this little companys' HTML editor, you'll probably (not) be surprised at how much you have to pay for it:)
Please do not check my HTML cos i've already checked it and it is definately cr*p
Myself, not trying to be anal either; Linux has been developed for 10 years and will continue to be developed - it gets an update several times a week, however Windows was apparently had very little development and has subsequently been updated every 6-8 months with mediocre 'service-packs' which do little, if not hinder the performance of the O/S.
Im just another Windows system administrator who's f***ed off with it......
Perhaps this means we can make something decent out of wholly inadequate code.
My Question here is:
Is it worth anyones while to attemp to adapt, implement or use code which is obsolete and over five years old?
Many Software companies release the source code now when their products become obsolete or are superceded on the merits that they no longer make revenue from them.
My last point: surely Windows 'security' has common traits throughout the versions 9.x > NT > Win2k. So surely they wouln't want to give away any code secrets to what 'security' there is in Win2k by releasing itscounterpart 9.x code...!
I wouln't wan't to suggest that this Labour government is of double standards but does anybody remember their fully disclosure policy; the one that said we could find out *anything* we wanted to about the government. That didn't last long, "You can see everything and anything....er....except for that"
But now, lo and behold! We can now go to jail for keeping our own confidentiallity.
WELL, HERES A WAY AROUND THIS NEW LAW
Simply claim when you are quizzed about an 'encrypted' file, that the file is in its native data format and has no other format: as far as I can see that should stand up all the way in court and would make quite a nice test case.
BTW what is the official European view on encryption (does anyone know?)
It wouldn't surprise me if WIN2K was *banned* in Europe for whatever reason the Euro-Parliament digs up (Brussels is very big on giving european companies a head start over the US).
With some of the strange laws passed in Europe affecting the UK recently, such as we *have* to use metric measurement instead of imperial and we can get away with a speeding ticket due to the right to remain silent. I would think that Brussels could also provide a law that it is illegal to sell a crap product to people while telling them that its great:)

OIC, who would have that miniturisation would be the easier route? :)
Thankyou, I will go home tonight wiser than I came here.....
Im not too sure we're on the same wavelength; I thought the Pentium class CPU's were 370smm: Isn't it easier to produce larger dies than smaller?
I need coffee

All this internation stuff really annoys me, what the hell is wrong with having seperate economies and the Internet as the common trade platform:
RULE BRITANNIA Britannia rule the waves,
Britains never never never shall be slain!
Europe consists of many things, level fields aren't one of them
Having looked it up; its under article *1* of the '87 trade description act: how do m$ get away with it??
