I'm not saying that at all. Yes, parents-to-be (and those with children, period) should listen to those around them for advice. However, this is no replacement for experience. I can tell you how to ride a bike, but you won't understand it until you do it.

Sigh... it's not really a matter of taboo for me, just my own views on decency. I'm not advocating censorship of any kind here, mind you, just voicing my opinion. I've got a fairly warped sense of humor, too... the Navy tends to do that to people :). Still, there are some things I just can't bring myself to joke about, mostly due to direct personal experience in those matters.

In all seriousness, it's really not funny to joke about this sort of thing. Do you enjoy joking about cancer patients? How about young women who contract cervical cancer via HPV from their partners? Real funny, buddy.

You're currently modded at -1, but upon reading your reply I wondered if you were actually infected and demonstrating a remarkable sense of humor about it. I say that as someone who knows a really remarkable human being (a linguistics guy who speaks and tutors in seven languages) who has been infected for 16 years, and by some miracle is still alive. If you're not infected, that was a pretty bad joke. If you are actually infected, you've earned some respect for being strong enough to be witty about it.

I find child pornography as revolting as anyone (aside from the sickos, of course). That said, I staunchly defend anyone's right to artistic expression, regardless of how revolting I might find it. You can't have it both ways; either you have freedom of expression, or you wind up legislating it away.

As long as no actual child is harmed, I cannot argue with fictional representations of sexual acts involving children. Are they repulsive? Yes. I'll still fight hard to defend the right to create such content, on the grounds that no actual person is being hurt.

In short, I find your agreement with legislating morality as it pertains to freedom of expression to be obscene.

When future parents are awaiting their first child, I hope they spend some time to learn how to handle small children.

They can study it all they want, memorizing countless tomes of wisdom on parenting, and it still won't adequately prepare them for parenting. Nothing but the actual experience of raising a child yourself will prepare you for it, regardless of how intelligence you might be. This introduces a bit of a problem, as you probably interpret this idea to mean that no parent on this planet knows what they're doing until they learn from mistakes made along the way.

On that, you'd be absolutely right.

Were you under the impression that I support DRM? I happen to be typing this from an Ubuntu laptop, busy installing Debian on a small office server across the room. I publish my software under the GPL v2 and BSD licenses. 99% of the content on my primary site is licensed under the Creative Commons, requiring only attribution.

So again, do I sound like the kind of guy who supports DRM of any kind? You must have misread my post (brief as it was). It was intended to be sarcasm.

    Whoooosh!

Do you really think I'm recommending that everyone move to the woods? That'd be pretty dumb, not to mention impossible. Sure, we need to do as much as possible to prevent mass catastrophes like this from happening in the first place, but there's still something to be said for reducing (not eliminating in 99% of cases) your dependence on public utilities wherever possible. This has other benefits as well, including pushing alternative energy tech forward.

    Nice nitpicking, though.
