    Idiots bring everyone down as much as assholes do. The only thing that really matters is results. Can you use what they produce? Can you maintain it? Can someone else pick it up and continue? This can apply on both sides of the spectrum as a mediocre contributor may produce garbage and require babysitting.

    Only the good ones? Utter trash in terms of spinning rust have a ton of useful metrics available through SMART. Simplifies the selection process quite a bit when everything is suitable rather than just some select models.

    It's much like trying to avoid the lingering legacy of DOS in Windows.

    If you are a wannabe software Robber Baron, then Linux just isn't for you. Finally after all this time the anti-GPL crowd have their own compiler and they're using it. No big surprise there.

    I have a 1.5TB drive that's been in service for nearly 5 years.

    I usually retire drives not because of failures or disk errors but due to capacity. I've seen drives from 500G up to 4TB and hammered drives of all sizes.

    Capacity doesn't really impact longevity.

    I know how thin SSD drives are. I have some. Although I realize their limitations. I just don't swim in the kool-aid or act like some sort of tech fashionista.

    It's good that you mention drive failures because spinning rust gives you some warning. It makes it easier to prepare rather than just being surprised suddenly.

    The cost difference also makes it more likely that you have some degree of protection either from array redundancy or extra copies of the data.

    Not going out of your way to waste as much money as quickly as possible has some practical benefit.

    It's not how frequently you're going to be writing to the drive but how much data you want to put on it when you do. Being unable to clone a drive WILL be a problem.

    You are trying to argue with precisely the sort of user you're trying to speak for.

    Yeah. Buy storage in 256G chunks.

    That makes as much sense as someone getting giddy over how large of an array they can make out of 10 year old hard drives. It will be unnecessarily complex and resemble some sort of Rube Goldberg machine.

    Large drives are hardly a "niche" use case.

    On the other hand, there is a very wide gap between what expensive SSD can reasonably deliver and what much cheaper spinning rust can manage. Spinning rust can manage a wide range of use cases.

    It's SSD that represents the niche: small data for very casual users that don't do much of anything.

    You still have to get the data on there. If that process is too bothersome when compared to alternatives, then us data hoarders may just pass on these drives.

    Plus, these drives will likely go for a hefty premium above and beyond smaller drives (like 4TB ones) that also perform better.

    They really don't need any additional reasons to dissuade potential buyers.

    We are certainly at the point where we can watch whatever we want when we want. We have been for a number of years now. The fact that the Apple Cult hasn't caught up with the times does not alter this. Piracy isn't required. Merchants will happily sell you stuff and suitable tools are plentiful.

    The idea that piracy is required is just fanboy nonsense.

    It's a display. It's only limited by what you plug into it. If you don't have any imagination, then you will end up with a lame result.

    If your old one is still working, there's probably no good reason to get rid of it and contribute to the volume of your local garbage dump.

    Yes they did. Sure, Greece shares some blame but their creditors went into this with their eyes open. They are like any other predatory lender that led to the financial collapse. They were so busy counting thei rprofits that they forgot to do any due dilligence. They just assumed that they mess they were creating would be cleaned up by someone else.

    It's just like the US mortgage debacle but on a grander scale.

    When a banker acts like a crack dealer, the banker shares the blame for the end result.

    Don't be silly. The poor won't get to stop aging at 30. They will get screwed just like they always have. Only the ultra wealthy will have access to this stuff. Only a small subset of the population will get to stop aging at 30. The rest will get shortened lifespans if anything.

    We have an iPod 2 that is still functional and for awhile had more storage capacity than any of our fancy new smartphones.
