    Windows users have been a den of pirates since the Win16 days.

    That will probably tend to greatly undermine the value of any DRM system over time. That which is not cracked already is probably seen as simply not worth the effort.

    Although that aspect of the Win user base can be useful at time (AnyDVD).

    Netflix is crap. It represents an inferior product and inferior quality. A streaming rip is the modern equivalent of two kids on bikes dubbing from one tape deck to another.

    If your customer is going to be satisfied with a Netflix "rip", then they were never worth much to you to begin with. You're better off getting over the idea that you can squeeze blood from that particular turnip.

    Of course the whole internet thing means that content owners have a highly inflated notion of the value of their stuff. They wrongfully see every download as a lost sale of the extra special OCD collectors version of the BluRay.

    If there's a Mac version, then you can probably safely rule that out.

    A proprietary binary can enforce DRM. It doesn't really need the rest of the OS to be "rooted". The fact that MacOS is not "rooted" in this fashion is why it doesn't fully support cablecard or bluray at all.

    Linux is much more prevalent among HTPC users than it is among desktop users at large. There is a much narrower gap between platforms since a lot of the underlying content is not platform specific. Even people that are using Windows or MacOS for their HTPC are likely still using Free Software to get a complete experience.

    It's time to kill that particular dinosaur. It doesn't matter how loud it roars or how many mice come out of the trees to defend it.

    Subscriber supported channels tend to produce better quality stuff as they see the viewer as the customer rather than advertisers.

    Firefly took it to a new and somewhat literal level. It even beat the vast majority of actual Westerns in this respect.

    That's one of the things that was interesting about it. It actually took the historical context of the Western seriously.

    I have a Roku. I have an AppleTV. I tried Netflix streaming for awhile.

    The PVR still gets the biggest workout. It has more stuff and more recent stuff and it's already being paid for so that stuff has a marginal cost of zero.

    There's thoughtful stuff on cable that will never see the light of day on Amazon or Netflix or iTunes.

    Like that's such a burden.

    It isn't.

    Here is your problem right here. Most people are too lazy to even program a PVR and content to be passive consumers. So devices that might improve upon TV get little attention and have a hard time trying to make headway in the market.

    If you can't handle a Tivo, then you're too stupid to use an iPad.

    That actually ads up to quite a bit.

    Fortunately for Corporate America, math education really sucks in this country and people are anti-intellectual above and beyond that.

    In order for news to be worthwhile it needs to be detailed enough to transcend the bias of the reporter. Most "news" simply doesn't qualify. You're lucky if they get the overview right. Chances are even that's wrong and that's where a lot of "media bias" comes in.

    It's not as simple as you make it out. A genuinely on demand system would require remarkably more bandwidth than is currently being employed for the task and much more than what's available currently.

    A bulk stream that you can pick things out of is not really a bad model given the state of technology and resource constraints.

    Technology would be better if incumbents weren't quite so successful at sabotaging it at every step of the way.

    AACS and Cable Card are great examples in this regard.

    Mine is no cheaper than an iPhone.

    Both brands of phone are subsidized at similar levels.

    If Apple doesn't have a "can't be bothered to pay more" option then that is by no means the fault of Android. That merely represents a group of customers that Apple chooses to ignore. So it is good that Apple isn't a monopoly.

    Being willing to ignore wide swaths of the market is nothing to brag about.

    When I visited an aunt recently, I was surprised to find that she went and bought herself an Android tablet. Surprisingly enough it was a model that I had been eyeballing myself.

    Not everyone buys an Apple product by default.

    Good software can be useful for your core business processes for decades. However, it has to be good to begin with. It has to solve a business problem well and add efficiency and actually work.

    It has to be good quality.

    People these days are much too focused on the quarterly reports and "being cheap" to really effectively invest in anything.

    This includes IT.

    This is also why those that can manage to get past this collective mental block have a distinct advantage over their rivals in the market.

    ...except you just have to follow the rules with OSHA.

    That's a relatively simple matter compared to making sure that you paid for everything and documented it in a manner that the BSA will accept. It's more like needing to properly document all of your OSHA relevant work and keep receipts and blueprints.

    Entirely different kettle of fish.

    Although it may be "inconvenient" if you flaunt sensible safety practices as many workplaces do.

    Never had that problem ever. Try trolling harder.

    The truth is that even different versions of the official monopoly product don't play well together. This is why a lot of companies use PDF for trading data. Also avoids those revision control security issues in word.

    The ironic thing is that Kodak pretty much invented digital photography long before it was practical to implement as a consumer product. They probably had the closest thing to genuinely inventive patents. Although it would have been a tragedy if they were able to set back the industry like Apple wants to.

    Too bad there's so many holes in it's content offerings.

    Plus there's the whole pricing problem. Much of the content is available only as a "purchase" that is often more expensive than what you can buy physical media for. It may not even be price competitive with cable.

    Plus you have the whole "streaming bandwidth" problem.

    You're probably far better off with a Tivo.
