    Nonsense. Both will have similar issues if "something is missing" and the fact that you are running Win7 will not magically prevent such a problem.

    This can actually be more of a bother on Win7 rather than less. A proper package manager is really handy in this regard.

    Any advantage here for Win7 is all about availability of proprietary apps and really has nothing to do with how easy it is to manage the system.

    Although the obvious question is why molest an HTPC that's just sitting there doing it's job?

    I just had to fight with a stupid Dell printer in Win7. It was an annoying mess that I would not expect with Linux. The driver wasn't already present. The magical auto-update couldn't sort it out. Even the vendor driver was packaged in a stupid manner that didn't really fit in well with how even older versions of Windows is supposed to do printing.

    All and all it was a completely underwhelming experience.

    Made me pine for a driver written by some "kid from Kiev".

    If you don't shop carefully, you end up with crap that doesn't work well in ANY OS.

    There's just no getting around this.

    It should. It can cost more than Oracle can in some situations.

    Mysql is nice but it simply isn't enterprise software. There's some dispute regarding whether or not mssql is either.

    I think you are confused.

    That was a complaint about all things not-Windows, not just Linux.

    Integrating into someone else's proprietary standard is an obvious potential show stopper. Other stuff is not quite so obvious.

    From a legacy software perspective, Windows is nothing more than an extension of DOS.

    The "right time frame" starts with the first version of MS-DOS.

    Unless you are the equivalent of an "office geek" or have to suffer one in your personal network, you really don't need msoffice. Any other alternative will do.

    Office is the single most bogus reason to claim that you're "stuck with Windows".

    The only thing you are missing there is support from the major studios. The rest is already there.

    I can and do take full advantage of an overpriced GPU in Linux and can get absurd performance metrics out of it too. That kind of stuff isn't the problem.

    Macs suffer similar problems to a lesser degree.

    Both suffer from being "also ran" platforms in the eyes of people that publish major studio games.

    Why? Wasn't the whole point of Mono was so it could run all of that .NET code on Linux? If it couldn't do that then just what was Miguel doing with all of his time all of those years?

    It's funny when the standard suggested name of some plugin is something like "Shark007".

    Windows users have no room to criticize here.

    The last "build" I did was nothing more than telling some online vendor what parts I wanted. I needed to know these things in order to buy any computer without being sold a lemon. This is simply something you can't get away from.

    Otherwise you are blissfully unaware that the current Mac Mini is a total lemon compared to the previous one.

    Not that a PC requires a lot of components these days anyways...

    It's not 1990 anymore. The tech should moved on. So should the arguments of those that like bragging about ignorance.

    If they are selling something at a loss then that probably means they are engaging in illegal anti-competitive behavior like dumping. This is especially true for a large company like Sony. They're one of the companies that should have the trust buster crosshairs right on their proverbial foreheads.

    It's not just the sports channels. He could cherry pick stuff from any part of the rest of the cable lineup and demonstrate the massive holes that exist in the current streaming services.

    I can buy 3 times the system for the price of a Mac Mini.

    There's simply no comparison.

    They are not "competitively priced". They merely have a crappy machine that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. That's not quite the same thing as "reasonable".

    Except you can do that with Cygwin.

    If "apps" are the crux of your argument nothing beats Windows. Period.

    MS apps on MacOS just won't be the same. Nature of the beast.

    Yes. Linux has the functionally better UI.

    The MacOS one is just prettier. Apple has better graphic artists working for it and they're great at marketing.

    If you're acting like you have some magic money machine that converts your free time to more money, then this is EXACTLY what you've claimed. It's no strawman at all.

    It's a necessary and obvious implication of the "time == money" argument.

    That's why you don't approach ANY purchase in a state of total ignorant bliss and actually research what you are buying before you buy it to make sure that it does what you need it to do.

    If you've done this rather necessary bit of legwork then all of the other "costs" people are whining about here are already taken care of.

    A Mac Mini may be "cheap" but it is still very weak compared to a similarly priced PC. Why spend the money just to get a lesser system?

    If Social Security lacks any solvency it's due to the fact that the funds collected for it are raided by a piggy bank on a constant and ongoing basis. Although this is a great argument for taxes right there. Even taxes with a stated dedicated purpose will be subverted by politicians.

    There is no such thing. Even in places where there is a strong commitment to public transportation and cities are designed with it in mind, it still performs poorly.

    In places that weren't specifically designed with mass transit in mind: forget about it. You gain no efficiency by creating a complete enough system.

    Any proposal that starts out with "lets beef up transportation infastructure" is likely doomed and the wrong approach entirely.

    The sorry state of navigation in streaming video is the best argument why to avoid it in general. The "streaming" formats really have no advantage here.

    The main problem is making sure that people aren't getting your content for free.

    Nothing else about "streaming" is terribly compelling for anyone.

    It's almost as if this is being driven by people that value appearances over practical considerations.
