Switching from MPEG-2 to H.264 really is about a 50% savings. If your video looks bad at 18Mbps MPEG-2, you need better hardware. It won't look great, it's almost as much as the ATSC standard. It's not as bad as satellite TV that allocates less than 5Mbps H.264 to HD channels.

None of it's anything compared to the 20Mbps+ H.264 used on Blu-Ray.

There's nothing wrong with Windows 10 at all other than the forced update. And that alone is what's going to keep IT/intelligent people recommending against it. It's approach to a start menu is much better for desktop than what 8 or 8.1 had, but you can still switch to tablet mode if you like it.

OK - it also still has a split legacy/modern control panel that I thought they'd have solved by now.

  7. If you don't have CableCARD, MythTV can be configured to be simple enough for wife approval. We use a Roku for Netflix and it's so much better than a browser interface. And even though the new ones come with bluetooth remotes, it accepts infrared if you have a universal you can program.

Right now, our MythTV is set up with an antenna and an HDHomerun box. All of our DVD and Blu-Ray rips are accessible with artwork/metadata. It's easy to set up a recording schedule from either a program guide or from a list of show names. And I have ours set up with games (that we own) from Atari to NES thru PS1 and DOS/Windows, all launched and exited from a universal remote on a cohesive menu system.

I'll admit I have put a lot of time into setup, but I really like the end result. And not having Netflix on the same device is a complete non-issue.

Buffering is a massive step backwards

Buffering is here to stay. Always has been. The length of time it takes to buffer is what's diminished greatly. What used to be 15-30 seconds of buffering and pauses in the middle on under-runs is now 2-3 seconds of buffering and adaptive streaming to prevent under-runs. But there's still buffering going on. A real-time bit stream would have terrible jitter and dropouts - even on a 300Mbps connection.
