  1. Re:how is glass different than silicon? on Optical Fiber With a Silicon Core · · Score: 1

Optical fibers are made out of Fused Silica (SiO2) and typically have a germanium doped core. As someone that does research with optical fibers I am very interested to look at their findings and see what research ideas I can come up with.

As of right now, probably not, however with the advances in bio-LEDs and the like, EEs needing to know O-Chem is never a bad thing. I had to take P-Chem because I was in a Photonics program, at the time I saw no point until my graduate studies (currently a PhD student in EE). You never know when you will find a use for something.

US Steel makes all kinds. Specialty steel and the coke is their biggest business in the Pittsburgh region. However, they do own a large portion of the steel mills in Eastern Europe. Something like the same amount of production in Europe they used to have in the U.S.

  5. Too bad on Higher Oil Prices Are Starting To Bring Jobs Home · · Score: 3, Interesting

they don't make steel in Pittsburgh any more. US Steel may be based here but most of the steel plants are no longer in the region. They make steel in Pittsburgh the same way they make cars in Detroit. Pittsburgh is mostly medical science and hospitals now. When industry comes back to the U.S. it will be in places that are less union friendly. (for the record, I do live in Pittsburgh)

As long as this game has been in development unless it is heralded in by the second coming of Christ himself it will be a let down. I also have no thrill in the possibility of having to explain to kids I teach about the humor and what the gamers of my generation thought was awesome back in the mid 90's.

  7. Why Nature wins on Beetle Naturally Builds Photonic Crystals · · Score: 1

is because of it's ability to do this. Many living things (bugs, fish, plants, few birds) have this trait. Even still we humans have a hard time even making good 2-D photonic crystals let alone 3-D.

  10. On the Wii on Where are Wii? · · Score: 1

This is nothing new. The Wii has been selling out upon arrival in the US since it was released. People were camping out for them even in the summer. What doesn't help is the fact that places like Gamestop and the like are only selling the systems as bundles where you get 3 controllers and 5 games, in turn turning a $250 system that comes with a game into an almost $600 system at the store. Out side of the fluke day where I got mine the only place I've seen them actually sitting on a palate was at CostCo. In fact that is the place everyone I know that has one got theirs.

  11. Not a source on Jimmy Wales Says Students 'Should Use' Wikipedia · · Score: 1

While looking up info for research is acceptable Wikipedia itself is not a viable source for information because anyone can add anything to it. While this can be reduced with enough oversight it still isn't enough. If Wikipedia is used to look up information you need to reference its references just like you would do with a book that has chapters compiled from other books and journal papers. He can say whatever he wants about Wikipedia being better but until peer-reviewed journal articles allow it, it does not count as a source.
