I use both debian and gentoo, and always prefer gentoo. About your claims.

Granted, Gentoo takes a little bit longer than your average installation. for instance, last weekend I installed gentoo on this laptop in less than 3 hours (and I spent lots of time learning the new 2.6 kernel stuff)
but, once you do, you can create a quick installation package to replicate bas install in less than 20 minutes (I guess your company can pay the 20c that a blank cd costs)

emerge does dependency checking, you just don't use the tools (have you heard of gentoolkit) or emerge -p
but you claim accident. you could've as well accidentally rmf'ed /usr and you would still be screwed (not gentoo's fault, get the point?)

gentoo has two branches: stable and testing. And by the way, most sarge reviewers will use precompiled packages from pretty much the same sources gentoo builds stuff, but sarge users don't have so readily the source code (unless they do apt-src which then makes the point moot)

and again.. aboout your last paragraph. Yes I do use debian, I like it, I still think gentoo works better

Yes... there's exporting (not perfefct) to latex.

The site works around the GNU Free documentation license and the central idea are the users. THat is, everyone can signup and post and you're not asked to give away your rights. And everyone can send corrections and addendums to any entry.

The site has already a descent amount of mathematical content that has been added over the last months, but it's still relatively small so contributors (and coders!) are well appreciated.

And the site does not aim to be just an encyclopedia nor a replacement of MW. It has forums to discuss math and there are several others sections being considered.

I invite you all to stop by and see another option, and contributing if you feel up to

  16. Re:Is this just graphics? on Tighter Video Compression With Wavelets · · Score: 1

I just wanted to point one of the reasons for which wavelets are better than fourier.

When you use fourier.. the basis functions are sines and cosines, whose ranges extend over all the real line... thus.. even for a small modification of the data you need to consider the whole set.
With wavelets, the stury is different... the basis functions used with wavelets have often finite support (roughly the range where they aren't 0) or at least have very fast decays. So... when you modifiy some data... you don't care about the whole data (i.e. the whole song or the whole video) but only on a finite interval.
This also means that wavelets are better suited to analyzing stream data.. since you can decompose locally instead of needing to have the whole data for applying fourier.

And btw... wavelet transform is *lossless* lossy... one of its main appeals are that the wavelets preserve the information so you can always recover the original data from the transformed one.

when you said lossy... maybe you meant that the data changes when you transform.. but its because it is a transform. But this transformatin lets you recover the original data exactly.
Think on the basic RLE.. of course it changes the origianl data, if it didn't, then you could end again with raw data and not compressed. But rle can be done inverse and recover the riginal image.
On the other hjand.. when you enconde a image with jpeg, you can't recover the origianl one.. that is lossy

And finally.... while fourier gives usually information about frequencies... wavelets give informatio about variations over the time.

I mean... if they 2 are in agreement why should society forbid it?

But.. when we are talking about pedophilia is very different. there are children being exploited to satisfy other persons. In many cases, those childs don't want to do it but are forced.

Read me well... am not criticizing the pedophilia itselfs, since am nobody to judge the sexuality other people. Am talking about all the mafia that abuses of childrens. They have to be stopped.

personally... I would prefer a free world in the sense that no one regulates what I wanna see or read. And if we can reach that and avoid it being a reason to childrens being abused. Cool.
