    a few things.

    shred is not very secure when used on files on modern filesytems
    not all files have a dot in their name
    what happens when you shred a library that shred depends on?
    its much easier to pipe the output of find to xargs ( or use -exec ) than use a shell for loop
    you should really just boot from another medium and use shred directly on the block device

    The nbc broadcast said it was computer generated, and it was obvious to my eye that it was such.

    Did anyone complaining on here acutally watch the nbc broadcast?

    totally unethical If the person had wanted you to have the data they would have given it to you. Most email providers have clauses in their user agreement that the accounts are non-transferrable upon death, as they should. This is to protect privacy.     just FYI http://mareichelt.de/pub/texts.cryptoloop.php?alt_styles=2 talks about the shortcomings of the original cryptoloop. AFAIK, truecrypt, loop-aes and the new dm-crypt/LUKS solves these issues.
