IDA Pro, the Interactive disassembler from datarescue is not only the best disassembler but also a great debugger, it can graph function flows, display pentium microcode, supports nearly every processors on the market (including your car's CPU.) Works nice with linux ELF binaries, etc... It is used by most antivirus researchers, crackers (who remove software protections), reverse engineers, hackers (who write exploits), etc. It runs perfect under wine without tweaking. Grab the demo and give it a go.
Also under windows, SoftICE, is also an excellent debugger which lets you assemble in place and do many other neat things.
Under linux, people have been trying to make SoftICE look-a-like debugger, such as LinICE, etc. and gdb is quite a powerful tool and is scriptable.
Slashdot's always a bit late on interesting security issues. This news was on the Hacker Emergency Response team beta new website a few days ago.
The site which accidently looks a lot like slashdot, focuses on quality security news; no vuln reports people don't care about... all the latest news and white papers.
A cool white paper on utf-8 shellcodes was released on it too.
This is horse crap, the windows word is common language and thus can't be copyrighted. Lindows on the other hand is an original name and a legitimate trademark.
Some lawyer paste some trademark law in a reply please?
What about Microsoft Joliet CD format which allows for filenames up to 64 characters.. Waaa that's innovative, isn't it? I bet it's cover by some patents.
I live in Jakarta, Indonesia. Here I can go to any mall and buy pirate software or movies, the cost is as follow:
1 PS2 DVD 1.5 US$
1 PS2 Silver (cdrom) 0.5 US$
1 PC Game 2 US$ per cd
1 DVD movie (high quality DVD9) 3 US$
1 DVD movie (average quality DVD5) 1.5 US$
1 CD full of mp3 2 US$
I buy pirate software everyday because it is so damn cheap and those shops are still making a margin. Even if I wanted to buy originals there is a 100 % tax on books and software, there is no choice, you have to wait months for new releases and if you try to order from internet most shops will reject your indonesian credit card.
There are a few shops selling original DVD films for 17 to 30 US$. If they were lowering their price to 5 or 6 US$ maybe I would reconsider buying original. VCD originals costs around 4 to 6 bucks and I used to buy mostly original copies befor DVD became popular. VCD quality sucks so much I don't buy any anymore.
For software, it is another matter. Microsoft licenses are the same price here as in other places of the world because the only people who can afford buying licenses are big companies. Even if you call Microsoft to buy an individual license they will not be able to forward you to a distributor who can fulfill your order. (I made a bet once, we really tried and I won).
Average monthly salary in Indonesia is 45 US$. If you're among the lucky 3% of wealthy locals, you won't even be able to order software or buy porn from internet since Indonesian credit card are blacklisted on most payment gateway for abuse.
Internet is so damn slow and expensive that you can't download much. Ironically, it is more expensive to buy a 7 cd debian 3.0 distrib (14 US$) than most pirate software since they charge you a fixed price per cd regardless of the content. It is quite cool I can buy my free software online and get it delivered by BMX messenger.
Thanks to software piracy poor indonesian can still get access to technology, learn skills, pass certifications (a CCNA costs 40 US$) and get jobs.
I personnaly hate those cd checks, hopefully most
of them are easily removable in 2 minutes under
IDA (which
is the best disassembler around, it supports a bunch of cpu include sparc, mips, arm, x86... and
linux binaries too).
If Microsoft introduces stupid protection scheme
they will be reverse engineered and cracked.
Btw take a look at a cute and now obsolete
gdb batch crack I wrote a while back when there was no linux binaries available to play the retail version of quake3 but a protected demo.

Nothing will prevent to capture, compress and convert to divx. If they want to stop the trading
of movies on internet, they better cut down the
price of dvd... I can't believe that in some countries they sell DVD for 2 or 3 times the
price of VHS...
Also the quality of some DVD is really low,
crappy aspect ratio, e.g Starship troopers in on
two side, you have to swap the side in the middle
of the movie like with those old laserdisc toasters and vcd.
Imitation and the definition of a meme

The dictionary definition, and Dawkins's (1976) original conception of the meme, both include the idea that memes are copied from one person
to another by imitation. We therefore need to be clear what is meant by imitation. Imitation is distinguished from contagion, individual learning
and various kinds of non-imitative social learning such as stimulus enhancement, local enhancement and goal emulation. True imitation is
extremely rare in animals other than humans, except for birdsong and dolphin vocalisation, suggesting that they can have few or no memes. I
argue that more complex human cognitive processes, such as language, reading, scientific research and so on, all build in some way on the
ability to imitate, and therefore all these processes are, or can be, memetic. When we are clear about the nature of imitation, it is obvious what
does and does not count as a meme. I suggest that we stick to defining the meme as that which is passed on by imitation.

From Richard Dawkins, The Selfish Gene, chapter 5
If only everybody would agree to be a dove, every single individual would benefit. By simple group selection, any group in which all
individuals mutually agree to be doves would be far more successful than a rival group sitting at the ESS (Evolutionary Stable Strategy)
ratio.... Group selection theory would therefore predict a tendency to evolve towards an all-dove conspiracy... But the trouble with
conspiracies, even those that are to everybody's advantage in the long run, is that they are open to abuse. It is true that everybody does
better in an all-dove group than he would in an ESS group. But unfortunately, in conspiracies of doves, a single hawk does so extremely
well that nothing could stop the evolution of hawks. The conspiracy is therefore bound to be broken by treachery from within. An ESS is
stable, not because it is particularly good for the individuals participating in it, but simply because it is immune to treachery from within.

The modern restatement of Darwinís theory grants a greater role than could Darwin to genetics. Itís best known popular expression is probably The Selfish
Gene (Dawkins 1976, 1989), though the interested reader can find a wealth of other excellent and accessible books by major evolutionary theorists.
Essentially there are genes, the replicators, and their phenotypes, the vehicles they build so as to replicate. Genes which build organisms with a
reproductive advantage in a particular ecological niche succeed. Other donít. Any genetic ëstrategyí [no conscious foresight is involved] that conveys
advantage on its host can carve out a niche for itself. Evolution strives for an evolutionary stable strategy [an ESS]; a system of genetic strategies that
cannot be successfully invaded and will not change whilst their external environment remains stable.

How come Bush father and son aren't in front of a tribunal? It would be fun to have them executed in the state of texas!
