By mod'ed down, you mean astro-turf'ed by NASA contractors building ISS / SLS / Orion crap...there are billions of dollars at stake with that sacred cow.
Most of NASA's budget is wasted on pork such as the ISS, the Rocket to Nowhere (SLS) and the Orion capsule; all manned porky missions. The money would be so much more useful for the following types of missions:
Terrestrial Planet Finder
Europa Clipper
Mars Sample Return
Unfortunately NASA's top management is all ex-pilots and astronauts and that is all they are interested in,
Why hasn't the state-run media (i.e. the networks and major newspapers) ever even mentioned "U.S. tech worker groups". This is the first I have ever heard of it. It is about time..
a long time ago.....
If, say, the reef fish cannot distinguish a coral head from a barracuda, then it get eliminated pretty quick. There must be a flaw in the artificial neural nets.
Gives a new meaning to Hurling Through Space...
Do they scrub it down between flight? Maybe not on discount flights. Mmmm will smell great...
Bring your cat...
It is extremely unlikely that any bugs that made the passage from Earth to Mars on the rover will survive on the surface of Mars and propagate. The perchlorates in the soil are a super oxidizer that will gobble them up. The surface of Mars may be more hostile to life than space.
Putting people on Mars? Where are they going to get the volunteers? An Insane Asylum?
Some people may think it would be a grand adventure, but it they will be very, very sorry when they get to Mars.
Targeting extremophilic deposits assumes that life on Mars, if it ever existed, really did or colonize start volcanic pipes or underwater vents. This is a big assumption.
No, NASA is run by ex-pilot and astronauts, alas. I wish it was run by geologists, or at least some scientist.
So what's the obsession with Mt. Sharp? They have found plenty of good stuff en-route including clays and mudstones. It would be insane to by-pass such deposits just to satisfy the pop-Press.
And don't you think that JPL would test the drill against volcanic rocks if that is where the mission is going to?
I think that the current MSL rover is doing the right thing, searching for lake-bottom sediments and not rusing to the base of Mt. Sharp like the non-scientists in the Media seem so keen on.
Searching for extremophiles is fine, but not at the expense of more missions to study water-borne sediments. Vallis Mawrth and other sites beckon.
Unmanned missions to Mars makes sense, manned, not so much
NASA should be split into manned and unmanned (i.e. JPL) directorate so this pork-y crap does not screw up science.

Of course.

That is the motivation, nothing more.
flying through the air while riding his motorcycle. Does that count?

It is the ONLY internet service offered in my area. Eeeesh, I cannot believe that a Comcast drone is trying to astroturf me....
How about freeing the rest us from the tyranny of Comcast? I am tired of being under their thumb.
Why aren't we doing the obvious? Next time you fly into San Diego or Phoenix checkout how many roofs are solar....zero
all the local State-run media outlets seems to somehow miss this information?
The weasels at Comcast will promise anything to get the merge and then forget all the promises.
It is almost as if the US papers run by the State...

The US press has almost no coverage of any of these protests. They have been turned into a lapdog of industry.

That is a good way for the CEO to slink away from responsibility....
This looks pretty bad for Ithaco: http://www.nature.com/news/the...: "ball bearings, which had already shown signs of pitting" BEFORE THE LAUNCH!!!!
You mean the "testing' of the Hubble mirror by the manufacturer (Corning glass?) in which profit was more important than quality?
