Every time Slashdot posts a link to an article on another website, that site gets hammered and (usually) goes down due to bandwidth being exceeded. Maybe Slashdot should adopt a policy of copying the article or at least, informing the webhost of the site you're about to shut down that a link will be posted.
When I lived in Europe I noticed something that should be used here. Their lights don't go Green->Yellow->Red->Green. Instead, they go Green->Yellow->Red->Yellow->Green. That extra yellow for those starting from a stop helps make the intersections a little bit safer. Also, some intersections have 3 cycles instead of 2 (north/south, east/west). The three cycles are north/south traffic, east/west traffic, and crosswalk traffic.
Personally, I don't need an optical drive. USB thumb drives work fine. Give me an ethernet port, 802.11g, decent size hard drive, decent graphics, usb, bluetooth, comfy keyboard and a detachable mouse that stores in the laptop.
The reason gaming is taking a more prominent role in pop culture and gaining an ever widening audience has more to do with the fact that people who grew up playing video games are moving into an older demographic. More and more parents nowadays buying games for their kids also played video games when they were kids. Video games will gain another step when it gets to the point when first generation gamers become grandparents.
