  2. Re:Help power cars? on Researchers Build Wearable Generators · · Score: 2

Depends on your definition of "slip". If you say a tire is slipping when its rotational speed does not match the theoretical zero-slip speed of a rolling tyre (which is a common definition), then yes, it is slipping pretty much constantly while driving. However, this "slip" is comparable to your being able to move your finger forward and backward while touching something, without the finger actually sliding over the surface, just using the elasticity in your fingertip. A tyre can keep doing this as it rolls around, which means the calculated "slip" is not really the tire sliding over the surface, but rather a continuously repeated deformation of the tyre surface which can give a significant difference between the theoretical zero-slip speed and the actual tire rotation speed. So while it is slipping according to the naive definition "speed does not match", it is usually not slipping when you use the "sliding, screeching" definition. That only happens in tight turns or when you drive like I do ;-)

This deformation-pseudo-slip does generate some heat since rubber does not reversibly deform perfectly without energy loss, but this is nowhere near the amount of energy released in a "real" slip.

However, they are used far too often in situations where the victim is not violent at all. Where "come with me without violence or I will use this taser" would have avoided any problems, but instead they decided to just use the taser right away. Because it's not lethal, so no big deal. That's the problem with tasers. Because they do kill occasionally.

It doesn't take that much time to run down the battery. If the 55 mile figure is correct, and the average speed on the track is over 55 mph, it should take them less than an hour, right? And that's assuming a full battery to begin with, while they had probably already run it down quite a bit. They probably only would have needed to drive it for anoher 15 to 30 minutes or so to catch the atual low battery event. And if something went wrong (Clarkson forgetting his lines, sun in the wrong spot,...), they would simply need to charge it up to a few percent and do it over. I really can't see a good reason for simulating this, and fitting a spinning down turbine sound over it for crying out loud.

A friend of mine once saw them in action in the French Alps during one of their "races": they unloaded the cars from trucks at the bottom of a hill and drove up a short stretch of twisting road, followed by the trucks which then picked them back up to bring them to the next stretch of the "race".

However, it seems that they went a little too far with Tesla, claiming breakdowns that didn't really happen. If this is true, Tesla has every right to sue. They deserve the free publicity, too.

Of course it does remain to be seen how far the truth was stretched. Maybe they only drove 27.5 miles and noted that the battery was half empty. That would sort of make their claim of 55 miles per charge legitimate even if they never actually ran down the battery. And did the brakes really break down or not? I guess we'll see in the lawsuit, or in the rectification either way.
