    Facebook has about 55 employees onsite in prineville (a town of 10k). They are adding more when they finish their second datacenter at the location. I was reading an article yesterday about how the town loves it.. Facebook orders lunch from a different local restraunt every day for 55 employees. Use locals for as much as they can, and only a few of the employees are transplants, most were trained locally.

    Plus more than half of the construction jobs were sourced locally..

    Now the amazon datacenter, up in boardman, OR, that is just basically a bunch of shipping containers..

    Don't forget the licensing.. In some government areas, it can take weeks to get a purchase through the purchasing dept..

    I love that punch line.. I mean.. hell, we love how everyone bitches.. so we just make shit up and implement it.. Its not like at almost all companies the IT department isn't even on the leadership board, but report to the CFO, just like the accounting department (since IT started in accounting to help them process the numbers at these big companies.. So any director of some crap department in Topeka can bitch and moan and get their stupid web page as a shortcut on everyone in the companies desktops... and that legal, marketing, and any CxO tells IT what to do, and we have to do it..

    Hell, where I last worked, the head of purchasing decided to order new copiers company wide.. With all sorts of fancy scanning options that one office liked. Told IT a month before they were to be installed.. She forgot to mention it, and didn't have any any to test with. Boy did WE look like asses for putting in copiers that didn't work with our current software, right in the middle of busiest part of the year.. IT is a bunch of idiots..

    Newegg is trying to fight against that, and its rather annoying. They will only sell a single drive per customer. They had no problem selling me motherboards, processors, and superMicro server chassis.. but when I asked for 12 drives (two 6 bay servers) even over the phone.. they said no..

    Very annoying.. I wasn't trying to 'stock up' I needed them for a project..

    I believe most (if not all) of these devices use Cell Phones for both GPS co-ordinates, and for Transmitting data. In fact, in the article, it mentions NexTel Makes one of them (ie, Sprint). Why Re-Invent the wheel when secure, very low power cell phone tech is so well researched already.. (and nationwide infrastructure is in place)

    I don't understand how you think that is as simple as putting all your program data in "c:\program files\microsoft\office 10\1033\bin" (or is that program files (x86) done silently without telling you)

    then your data goes into c:/users/localdata/applicationdata/microsoft/office/outlook/"
    Or your settings/data can go in an arcane database that is only 20MB or so in size, but can take a modern computer 3-4 minutes to search through..
    Except of course, libraries, which might be in c:\windows\system32\ or c:\windows\syswow64\
    (both of those are a fun set of folders named after GUID's and using lots of hardlinks to make things even easier to locate)

    How can you not see the simplicity of windows compared to unix?

    People sure seem to think clustering is the key to everything..

    I'm with you, tried and tested.. I like when a client mentions how they have 2 standby database servers in remote locations, with almost live replication, so they can survive everything... I ask them what happens if someone types "drop table user; commit;" in oracle.. Sure enough, it replicates to the standby's, just like its designed to... (they really get upset when I point that out too)

    Same thing with files.. I've seen way to often the mirrored site just replicate the deletes ;)

    A dell R815 with 2 twelve-core AMD processors (although they were not bulldozer ones) 256GB of ram, and a pair of hard drives was $8k cheaper than a similarly configured Dell R810 with 2 10-core Intel Processors when we ordered a few weeks ago. That difference in price is enough to buy a nice Fusion-IO drive, which will make much, much more of a performance impact than a small percentage higher CPU speed

    I was disappointed to see they have only invested $10 million. My alma matter in Oregon (OIT) has been geothermally heated for for 50 years.. and a few years ago, they started building a power plant to power the university, plus sell extra hot water and power to the hospital next door:

    They have the US Geo-Heat center located on campus (since the whole campus was purposefully put on a geothermally active site) They have put out tons of data on the new combined heat/power system.. (yes, the web page is straight out of 1996)

    I would be a fan of limiting the loan amounts to what the lowest cost of the course is in the general area.. Ie, if the university offers Writing 101 for $300 ($100 a credit) and the community college offers it for $100 ($33 a credit hour) then they would heavily push you to the cheaper option..

    I agree with you, however, there is one point to make..

    I went to a smaller school (about 3000 students) in another state. i looked at the community college route.. (especially since mom worked for the CC, and tuition was free) I took a few classes there..
    However, to get into any specialized major, there are so many prereqs (often only taught once per year) that even if I took all the classes I could at a CC for free, It still would have taken me 3.5 MORE years after those two to finish my bachelors, and I would have paid more since room and board for 1.5 years more was more than my free tuition was worth. (not to mention the opportunity cost of entering the job market a few years later). Plus, I would have struggled to have 12 credits a term, meaning I would have had difficulty several terms getting any financial aid)..

    Sure, if your taking a general major at a big college, that can work. But not always..

    Dropping WIMAX for their new LTE 4g network. This not only means that if you do not have 4g currently, you will never have it for your current 4g phone but also that all Sprint 4g phones being sold today, even if you are within a current 4g area, will stop operating as 4g at the end of next year because they will not work on Sprint’s new network.

    So, after they turn on LTE in the first few markets, they are going to cut the power to all their WiMax gear? Wow.. And here I thought they would do as they have publicly said, and continue to use WiMax where it is, until the equipment is replaced in 5-7 years..

    I run linux as well, but I often virtualize windows setups, since I need to work on them as well. Many of the microsoft training things need a couple of clients, a domain controler, and SQL server.. Also, at work, we give pretty much anything at least 2GB, because ram is cheap. Disk IO is very, very expensive..

    I used Virtualbox on a Thinkpad Laptop with 8GB of ram and an SSD to prototype many, many of my projects.. It would get sluggish after about 5 VM's were turned on.. (with 1GB of ram each, and one with 2GB ram).. These were Windows Servers.. not my normal linux toys.. Virtualization is different for everyone.. If you virtualize a file server, then yes.. You better have server class hardware underneath it. If you virtualize a bunch of static web serves, then it really doesn't matter.. etc.

    It really depends on what kind of tasks you want to do, which the submitter never specified. (btw, MS recommends for their training servers a minitower class machine running Server 2008, with Hyper V, at least 8GB of ram, and a pair of at least 500GB drives, in a striped set (no parity) to run all their practice labs...)

    Buy a computer.. Put >8GB of ram in it (i would recommend 2GB per VM, and 2GB for the host). Maybe some nice fast disks..

    Load VMWare ESXi, or another OS and virtual machine software of your choice..

    The ability to snapshot and restore things will save you so much time testing things, you'll wonder how you used to get things done before. Maybe, setup a second system or laptop for things like wireless testing, drivers, etc.. things you can't simulate in a VM.. but with the virtual networks in most VM's, you can setup some very, very complex networks...

    And at most universities, both housing and sports are a COMPLETELY SEPARATE ENTITY!.. You look at how much the football team brings in.. Did you forget about how much it costs to send the womens Rowing team to their events? Or building and maintaining a stadium to hold 70,000 people?

    Does it support Active Sync encryption profiles for connecting to Exchange servers yet? Because when it first came out, it didn't support the encryption protocol invented by Microsoft for smart phones...
