I have always thought its pretty amazing how much time and money go into the cockpit of a plane, and technology to protect and recover a pilot, but then we have to have this huge debate in this country about spending a few thousand dollars to hang some armoured doors on a hummer, to protect the poor army guys that get shot at all the time..
People keep comparing Rail to bus service, which is wrong. This is between cities, just like going airport to airport. People don't complain that the airport isn't a few blocks from their house (in fact, they complain if it is!). They take a bus, taxi, or get a ride to the airport. High speed rail is similar.
For me, a speedy rail service from where I live (which is one of the proposals) would be awesome. I certainly wouldn't use it every day, but I do like to fly, and choose local airports, which are quite a bit more expensive than the Chicago airports. I hate the traffic, and dealing with long term parking, etc..
Sure would be nice to take a bus, taxi, or have a friend drop me off at the station, take a 2 hour ride (completely stress free on the train) and end up in downtown Chicago, just a block from the Train that goes to the airport. (unless they extend the high speed rail to the airport, which they are talking about too). I would be able to have cheaper flights with less hassles, and would frequent the chicago area more often. Not to mention, every time I do that, is one less car on the road, and Chicago has way too many cars on the roads.. (I thought LA was scary)
Thats exactly right.. freaking rate limit them to 128k/s Painful, slow, horrible, but still able to pay their bills online if they need to, or send an email.. painful enough that they won't do it again...
To reply to my own post.. two other things to work around..
- If you can turn off all PC's, you can turn them all on. Force all machines on at 2am via WoL, check for updates, and shut off when done. Its actually pretty easy to setup.
- Use that same WOL tool to turn on all computers at 7:45 or a bit earlier, so that the virus scan updates, and general booting of the services, is done before the people log in a few minutes before 8am..
-In many companies, you would be darn near shot for asking if you can access your PC from home. Besides, what do you need off your PC? Your data should not be on the pc, it should be sitting on a server, where it can be properly secured. That's what VPN's and terminal servers are for..
-Updates should NOT be run at night, because then the machines never get rebooted to actually activate the updates (unless you tell them to reboot even if the user is logged in, which ruins the "running a simulation all night" thing)
- Have you ever, ever in the last few years had your virus scanner actually catch something in its "nightly full scan?" Nowadays, they always catch them on the "on access scans", which is preferred.
I wonder, would cracked.com even exist if it wasn't on digg's front page every other day or so with another top X list... Not saying they aren't entertaining.. but damn, they have alot of them.
I have a slightly different theory, but about the same ratio...
About 90% of cops are the people that like to do the right thing, help people in need, stand up for the little guy, etc.
However, the other 10% are the guys that you picked on in school, called names, made fun of, and didn't listen to.. Now its their turn, and they are going to show you...
Actually, Windows XP will stop being supported TOMORROW!!!!
Keep that in mind, when you wonder why Dell won't give you AHCI or network drivers for your system to run XP with in a few months..
The Only reason a company I worked at moved from NT4 to Windows 2003 server was because we needed more CPU and ram, and we couldn't find NT4 drivers for things like the RAID card.
There are a few small companies doing one thing that is very interesting.. selling their electric vehicles (I remember reading of a small delivery truck) without batteries, then having a seperate lease for the batteries. Pay a small amount for the batteries per month, and if you have a problem, the dealer swaps them out for you, with no additional cost. If a new widget can hold twice the power in the same size battery pack, they will swap it in when the current lease is up, and you want to start a new one.. Some states really like this, because they know the batteries will then be recycled.
No, as he stated, you can get the alternate disc from bittorrent as well. Then use that to upgrade to 9.04. That would DRASTICALLY reduce the load on the mirrors..
Most companies also don't have restraunts, bus service between buildings, free soda's, etc.. In fact, most companies don't have 30,000+ people all working in one spot...
The parent was referring to when Mr. Dell said that that's what he would do if he was in charge of Apple a few years ago. Since then, they have skyrocketed...
Also, there's the whole cold-weather thing. Traditional fluorescent tubes will start up in the garage for me, provided it's over 0F or so. Not so for CFLs; I went back to incandescent.
I just moved to Wisconsin, and got to experience my first ever "real" winter. My CFL lightbulbs I put in the outside lights near the door took about 20 seconds to warm up when it was about -15 outside (about -60 with the windchill, don't think that matters for the bulbs)
They would turn on, be very weird colored and dim for a few seconds, then get much brighter quickly. They were GE CFL's, standard 60 watt ones..
Every undersea fiber cable has repeater boxes built into the cable every X miles to regenerate the signal. They are powered by electrical cables embedded in the line. Every undersea fiber cut also technically cuts a power line. Not to mention, the technology is pretty darn easy. You should have a GFCI outlet near your sinks and in your bathroom. They keep you from dying when you drop the blow dryer in the tub...
Yet strangely enough, nobody has tried to come after the now defunct band Nirvana's surviving members for having a naked baby on the cover of one of its albums...
That is true, however, large infrastructure would have to be put into place in the other areas of the world also. Hulu uses some very large content distribution networks to cut down on traffic costs.
But on the whole, your right. There is no reason they can't show an Opel Commercial to an EU viewer, a Ford commercial to a US one, and show a TATA ad to a viewer in India.

Actually, they need to produce much more than 200MW, since they are going to lose quite a bit of power transmitting it down through the atmosphere...
But really, they don't need to coat it in glass, or anything like that.. they can make it as thick as tin foil, and roll it out.

I agree with you, however, one thing to consider..
The US law specifically states that bankruptcy will not discharge student loans.
Companies do not have that nasty little law..

I have never understood why Ubuntu doesn't format partitions this way by default when you use the default "automatic" partitioning scheme..

Coming soon, Telco Definitions..
Instead of 800 Minutes a month (every call rounded up to nearest minute)
they are going to release:
40 GB A MONTH*
*All transfers rounded up to nearest Gigabyte..
There are particles in the washer, like Iron, that can get deposited.. also, the dryer is probably much more destructive...
What, no talk of wear leveling helping your SSD's last for decades on limited writes?
Oh, wait, wrong zombie myth. Damn.. We seem to be getting quite a few popping up lately..

There is one common element in all your failed relationships and careers...
You...
Wasn't it Patton in WW2 that said "dying for your country is no way to win a war, the key is to make the other bastard die for his!"

Sadly, Empathy has Jabber video chat support. Their MSN and ICQ chat is still handled by libpurple, which is pidgin.
