Why do we always insist on crashing things into our planet? Isn't the one of the biggest cost of putting things in space the cost of fuel to fight gravity. Since we got them up that high, why not just point them at the sun and send them away? It would be like throwing toothpics on a forrest fire!!
Can it really be that hard to target the biggest freakin object in our solar system?? Seems alot more ecologically safe to me. Then we don't have to worry about mutant space fungi!!!

Seriously what good is 100Mb (unshared) gonna give you when the rest of the internet is bottle-necked in the first place?
This sounds alot like the argument that people used when DSL lines were brand new! The fact is, if enough people get faster connections, then the major backbones are going to have to work harder(and R&D alot more) to develop faster routing.. if you build it, they will come!!
Look at it from an apartment building's perspective. One 100MB connection is awfully fast, and if you give each tennant >=T1 speeds from their apartment, you could make quite a profit off of it.. Who wouldn't mind paying $35 a month for their share of one of these lines...
If this was in my neighborhood, I know many other college students living near me would subscribe. Screw the rest of the internet, I don't care if pages load in.005 seconds, as opposed to.006 seconds, but if me and my friends were all in the same area, all connected to the 100MB fibers, Gaming would really kick ass. And then we wouldn't have to worry about trying to string cat5 all over the neighborhood very discreetly!!!

The CEO of the RIAA flat out says in this article that swapping CD's with a friend is not wrong, however, with SDMI, that will no longer be an option, much less swapping between your old Audio Player and your new one (say it breaks and you buy a new one), or the CD player in your car..

It is silly to ban devices that can play an established, very widely used protocol, simply because some of the users choose to use it in ileagal ways.. Wired uses Mp3's in many of its audio only interviews, perhaps they should be dragged out onto the street and beaten for using a "Bad" protocol, I mean, if its in MP3 format, then i guess it should automatically be made illeagal right?

I am a computer geek, check my email every 3 minutes, cary a palm, etc. but I like to "disapear" sometimes..
Last week, my friend got a call at 2am in the middle of the forest while camping, one of his companies servers needed rebooted and the tech didn't know the command!! I don't want that..

Are universities being co-opted to provide MS based programming tools instead of other alternatives? Eg. Linux/Gcc/as/Qt/Gnome?
I do not think that this is so. I work for my colleges Computer Department, and we use M$ Visual Studio 6 for two reasons. 1. Its donated to us by Microsoft. (yes, we know that gcc is free!) 2. It is very easy to use. Keep in mind that this is an introductory C++ class.
Do you really want to have to sit down and explain to students all the intracacies of vi or emacs? Do you want to take the time to teach them exactly how to use the debbugger, or would you rather teach with an easier to use/more intuitive UI and stick to teaching the course.. Lets face it, from a beginners perspective, it is much easier to use VS6. It really is a decent UI for a beginner. After they get experience, then they can deal with learning other systems, portability, etc.
Also, the prof's here are really supportive of students that have the will to develop on other systems..

Sure, its alright in the eyes of the slashdot community for groups like napster to enable people to download MP3's. Apparently, copyright protection is viewed on slashdot as only for the small man, if it belongs to a big, profitable company, it is okay.
I know that there are some major differences, like selling the copyrighted material as opposed to distributing it for free, but when you boil it down, there both stealing. How can you complain if your hard work is being pirated if you run napster and gnutella?
I'm not trying to start a flame war, but everyone seems to be so pro-napster, and the general vibe is: "screw the big rich music companies." However, when others do similar activities, there is a cry for help.

How about setting it up so that if you recieve too many troll or offtopic points in a specified period of time, you get your ability to post yanked for a period of time. And say maybe that for every comment that gets 2 points, it erases a troll point, if it gets 4 points, it erases 2 troll points.. etc. this would help keep the ratio somewhat in check, allowing the people that have the most interesting comments more leeway on OT and funny stuff. maybe even ban the IP.. that would make it more tricky for them to post as AC too!

Let the students decide on a project that they would like to do, and then have them work in a group to accomplish this. In school, programming classes emphasize too much on the individual programmer. In industry, team work is a requirement. Get them to work together, plan and design, then implement it. This way, they will be more prepared for a proffesional career in programming

Correct me if i'm wrong, but just because a product meets a trusted specification, and passes a product test, it can still have bugs that were not tested for. With open source, if a product was designed this way, it would be easier to find other potential bugs that could endager the security of the tested system.
Things such as accidental back-doors and such that might not be tested in a formal test, would have the chance to be noticed by hackers the world over. closed source does not mean no bugs, or potential security breaches, just none that the group of developers have thought of.

invent a light bulb, get a museum and lots of credit, (even though other kinds of street lights were used before) Develop a small, cheap method of transportation, which has caused sprawl, pollution, gridlock, drunk driving deaths, and a small feeling of personal freedom, go down in the annals of history. Kill 6 million people on the basis of their religion, and everyone knows your name. Invent the basis of the future, the foundation from which business, commerce, and information can freely pass, a basis from which undoubtedly every is touched, directly or indirectly, and people say "who?"
