  1. Microsoft Research Innovations Enhance... on Microsoft Invents Symbolic Links · · Score: 1
REDMOND, Wash., Mar. One, Two Thousand -- Three years ago, Bill Bolosky and two Microsoft colleagues were brainstorming technology advances when an idea occurred to them -- why not save screen space by replacing numbers with representational symbols. They invented a series of ten symbols to replace the numbers from zero to nine.

Not only would this save screen space, they reasoned; it would also result in substantial performance improvements. Moreover, it would make it faster for information technology (IT) managers to install computers for new employees since they'd no longer be required to type in such a long IP address everytime they set up a new workstation.

The three sent a memo to Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates outlining the idea. Both Gates and the Windows Two Thousand product team liked the proposal, and the Windows team asked Bolosky if he could develop the feature himself. During the next year and a half, Bolosky, a researcher in Microsoft Research's Systems and Networking Group, and three of his researchers worked full time with a crack squad of numerologists to invent the following...

    zero - 0
    one - 1
    two - 2
    three - 3
    four - 4
    five - 5
    six - 6

  2. Short List on Jon Katz' "Geeks" Goes Hollywood · · Score: 1
Knowing just the subject of the film and not the storyline, here's some of my picks for the short list...

Sean Connery as the wizened old AT+T programmer guru
William Macy, Steve Buscemi and Norm MacDonald as the 9-5 office workers
Adam Sandler as the evil hacker who meets an untimely, gruesome demise early in the film
Mickey Rooney as the voice of God
Jennifer Aniston as the bland geek love interest
    and of course...
Natalie Portman as the sexy sysadmin at the college

    Terry Gilliam should direct.

OK, now that the consensus has been reached, we need to start thinking about new names for the three 'Baby-Bills'... How about...

Windows 'R' Us (OS division) (or 'We Do Windows inc.')
    Office Schmoffice (Application division)
    Net'n Special (Internet division)

  4. Re:He wants to wait and do the collection... on No Star Wars TPM on DVD · · Score: 1
What a load of sh*t. Just have one of the transfer houses do a decent transfer to DVD, every fan will buy it. Then, after finishing all the other flicks, do a 'Special Edition' with additional materials, outtakes, behind-the-scenes, etc. Personally, I couldn't care less about the extra fluff, but there are many fans who would also buy the Special Edition.

I think he is trying to take advantage of the buzz that will be generated with the release of the next movie. I fully expect TPM to be released on DVD when Episode II is released theatrically.

  6. Ho Ho Ouch! on Children Turn On Santa · · Score: 1
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house.
Not a creature was stirring not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads.
And Mama in her kerchief and I in my cap
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter
Santa was being stoned, his glasses were shattered.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Got my rocks ready and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave a luster of midday to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear
But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver so lively and quick,
He was almost able to dodge my well thrown brick!.

  7. my thoughts on eBay Sues Auction-Indexer · · Score: 1
This is pretty crazy. EBay should appreciate the business that will be generated through the indexing services; from my understanding, most of their income comes from the slice that they take from each sale.

Would it be illegal for me to advertise one of my EBay auctions on Usenet? (I know it would be annoying unless on alt.forsale...) Then would Dejanews be breaking the law by finding my advertisement for someone?

I think of the Internet as a public forum. Everything posted on non-secure sites should be available for linking and searching. The web is compelling because there is so much information linked and searchable. These lawsuits are setting dangerous precedents.

I do see a problem with commandeering someone else's content and then putting your own banners around it. That is different than what (most) search engines do.
