  1. So simple: Work with Microsoft and make an iPad on Intel Wants PCs To Be More Than Just 'Personal Computers' (engadget.com) · · Score: 1

I believe many people would love a lightweight tablet (or phone) that they can use as their main computer to "resume" whatever it is they were doing. Think Nintendo Switch. I absolutely abhor Windows and have been using Unix for.. (crap, man I'm so old), but I have been curious enough to get a 13" windows tablet to give it a try. Man does it sucks (not that Linux is any better, there's nothing since Ubuntu gave up). It's much better than it used to be, I actually use it to read my humblebundle ebooks, but so far behind Android or IOS in terms of usability. There's so much potential, especially since Microsoft opened their eyes and started following the cloud movement. But they don't even have the basics right... It's depressing, it reminds me of the first windows phone, where they almost got the idea but were so entrenched in their menus and stuff that they didn't think about usability. I should stop, I'm ranting.

  2. Re:Neat, but not really needed... on Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ Launched (raspberrypi.org) · · Score: 1

I'm still using the original Pi, it runs 24/7, this thing can be reliable. I have the Pi 2 and 3 as well, also some zero-w's, they're cheap and are great for home automation, robotics. Running linux and having ready-to-use relay boards, cameras etc... is just crazy convenient.

  3. Information overload on Is Pop Music Becoming Louder, Simpler and More Repetitive? (bbc.co.uk) · · Score: 1

Could it be that the internet and smartphones are providing so much information that our brain actually prefer simpler things nowadays ?

  4. Pournelle’s Law on SciFi Author (and Byte Columnist) Jerry Pournelle Has Died (jerrypournelle.com) · · Score: 1

Oh boy did I enjoyed reading Jerry's column in Byte magazine. Adventures in putting together PCs, troubleshooting, that was inspiring. I am still a big fan of Pournelle’s Law: Hardware problems? It's almost always a cable.. (or something like that.. see https://www.jerrypournelle.com...). I will miss you Jerry.

  5. Trolling does not help much the discussion. Android runs on Linux, there's just no way to argue about that. But in the end we are in agreement about some points at least: no enough apps right now, but it's definitely progressing, albeit slowly, just as Linus said... Which was sort of my point. Oh well.

  6. Re:Wow! on Torvalds Hasn't Given Up On Linux Desktop Domination, Will 'Wear Them Down' (cio.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

Android won consumers, so there's hope for Linux for consumers. I seems that people care about apps, and what's on Windows that you can't get on Linux these days? Definitely not everything. But the list is growing. Video editors (e.g DaVinci) games(steam), it's all slowly coming together, so Linus definitely has a point I'd say.

  7. Have you thought about dividing to reign ? on Ask Slashdot: High-Performance Laptop That Doesn't Overheat? · · Score: 2

Facing a similar problem, I ended up choosing a Lenovo Thinkpad T440s (fully loaded), which gives me lots of battery life, a 3G modem to connect from everywhere (supported out-of-the-box by Ubuntu), and a set of high-end desktops and servers to do the heavy lifting. I get best of both worlds: I can develop and test things on my (still pretty fast) laptop, and once I have basic tests passing I push my code and remote-run jobs on more powerful servers that I don't really need to carry around with me.

  8. Re:This is so 1990s on Linux Mint 17 'Qiana' Released · · Score: 2

I noticed the same benefits using Xubuntu 14.04. A lightweight user interface, very fast and easy to use. The OS is also very fast to install, very fast to boot, everything just works and updating is smooth. It may not be as "fancy" as regular Ubuntu or Mint, but I find Xubuntu very stable and polished (our usage is file and compute servers/clusters, desktops, mostly software development and office work).

  10. What about SIM card tracking? on Phil Zimmerman Launching Secure "Blackphone" · · Score: 1

"They" know which SIM connects to which cell tower, so I don't understand how this phone prevents tracking. Did I miss something?
