What is intel thinking trying to sell us RAM at these prices? I could buy a whole eMachine, including monitor and everything for the price of one 128meg stick of RDRAM. Is anybody actually buying these systems and paying these prices? I imagine some must, probably the big corporations that believe nobody ever lost their job buying the latest intel. Does anybody know when the prices for this ram might be going down? Or even better if intel has any plans to support the relatively cheap new DDR ram? I am really dismayed that intel thinks they can gouge us this way. We need to stand up and say "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any more!" and then go buy a nice new Athlon.

Please fill me in on the straight story so I know how to respond to the FUD. Thanks all!

People are more likely to have a cell phone or a pda than a cross in this day and age. Now I'm not saying this is an entirely good thing. That probably won't be known for quite some time. Please don't get me wrong, i love the concept of linux, open-sourced, free, community built and driven, and i would switch back in minutes given the chance, but linux really needs that single element that MS still has, Gloss and simplicity.

The linux community really should take this comment to heart, or at least this one word: gloss. Gloss is the one thing that always seems to be missing from open-source apps. The functionality is usually much greater in open-source apps than $$$ apps, but the gloss is almost always missing. Techies don't notice because mostly all they care about is functionality, but we really need to start noticing these things and start adding the gloss to win over Mr. Consumer.

  12. RealNetworks, a Baby Microsoft? on RealNetworks Sues Streambox.com · · Score: 3

Due to a recent, temporary restraining order (TRO) by US District Court in Seattle, Streambox Ripper, VCR and Ferret are no longer available for download. In view of the serious impact of the TRO with respect to Streambox's business, the Court also ordered that Real Networks post a $1 million dollar bond to cover any loss to Streambox if the Court later finds that the TRO was wrongfully issued. Read press release. We regret any inconvenience this may cause you. However, you may still download an altered version of Streambox Ripper (without RealAudio decoding) that supports MP3s, CDs and Windows Media files. Thanks for your understanding, and be sure to check back often in the coming days for updates on the lawsuit, as well as other products. Happy Holidays from the entire Streambox team!

Got this off of the Streambox web site. RealNetworks is really getting to be a little baby Microsoft it seems. Can you imagine if Microsoft ever breaks up? Can you imagine 10-20 of these little companies like RealNetworks trying to crush or at least sue every competetor to death. It makes me think that maybe keeping Microsoft together as one big but slow-moving beast wouldn't be such a bad idea.

Some days I just feel like talking about the newest linux distro and there's no related stories so I can't. This makes sense when you realize that usually the threads digress to these popular subjects anyway. Just imagine if there were 50 forums here on linux, each one taking on a slightly different variation? The reason I think the forums should be strongly moderated is to keep the topics on focus. If you are posting on the corel linux distro forum and you digress, then it gets deleted. If you spam, it gets deleted. If you post natalie portman trash, it gets deleted. The goal is not to interfere with free speech, but rather to remove the signal noise that is rapidly overtaking slashdot. The moderation angle seems to be working really well on fool.com, for example, because they have forums on incredibly specific subjects and these are some of the most popular forums on the site. Now I'm not saying we can't still have news articles and respond to the news. I think we can have both, and then see which is more popular. Just an idea, anyway. What do you think?
