  1. Need an alternative on Was the Amazon De-Listing Situation a Glitch Or a Hack? · · Score: 1

This just made me realize how much I depend on amazon for product reviews and quick buys. I think I need to diversify my buying habits so I'm not relying on one behemoth for most of my online book and impulse buying needs.

  2. Heck on Why Is Adobe Flash On Linux Still Broken? · · Score: 1

Adobe still hasn't released a native Flash Client for Vista x64 and as such I still can't play Flash vids on my Vista Media Center. Should tell you how crappy Adobe development is right there. I'm just surprised there's no 64-bit browser embedded universal player that'll take care of flash, quicktime, and all that stuff so there's only one plugin to update..

It also shows that responsible adults think about how they're going to pay off their college loans and provide for themselves without living in their parents basement fighting off the bill collectors. Not to mention if a field is worth pursuing, why wouldn't it offer something slightly more than a living wage? 35k as a research assitant isn't much compared to 60k for writing code and maintaining servers especially when you've got rent and loans to pay off.

  4. Too few go into science huh? on Are US Voters Informed Enough About Science? · · Score: 1

When I was in college in the 90's, every single science professor I spoke with said the field was saturated. From Physiology and Paleontology, to Ecology and Biochemistry, job prospects out of college paid horribly. So I went into IT, which paid better and was a lot less stressful. Maybe if the markets adjust and science actually offers careers that are rewarding after college it might attract more people. Last thing we need is doomsayers wringing their hands in anguish: "Oh noes, more people aren't throwing their futures away by joining an already oversaturated field". How about you put your money where your mouth is and put some well paying science jobs out there or STFU.

Same here. Add in the: - offroading capabilities, - added storage vs. a compact hybrid, - ability to have the top down in the summer when transporting wet dogs, - the ability to strap down home improvement goods like plywood and lumber to the roll bars for transport, and honestly, I don't see how a hybrid could match the added functionality of something like a jeep. It helps that I take public transport in to work when I'm not working from home, so I don't have to worry about parking and driving every day and don't get hit with the rising gas prices too badly for the few activities I do use the jeep for.

  11. Turnabout is fair play on New Science Standards Approved in Florida · · Score: 2, Insightful

If religious representatives insist on arguing over science standards, scientists need to barge in on all the other curricula and insist on arguing over the definitions of words in their syllabuses too. Start by telling all the comparative religion classes to teach kids that the bible being the word of god is an unsubstantiated, non-scientific hypothesis.

  12. hah on Torvalds On Desktop Linux's Slow Uptake · · Score: 1

Linux devs don't really care about the desktop. All they care about is the server. Otherwise we wouldn't still be having arbitrary response issues with random apps, driver compatibility issues that gives Vista a run for the money (especially once you start playing around with xen) and craptastic development time on wine(x).

Mind you, I say this while writing this post on my machine installed with Gutsy.

If you want to be taken seriously about linux on the desktop, get wine(x) working with apps released within the last year instead of being 10 years behind on your windows cross-platform application compatibility. Where's the DX10.1 port to linux? And if I'm gonna be paying for Cadega for my games, I might as well just install win2k or winXP dual boot instead. Because the linux desktop right now falls closer to Vista in usability than it does to either 2k or xp.

  15. Re:User interfaces on GUI Design Book Recommendations? · · Score: 2, Interesting

That's a good start, but one thing that I find essential is to make it customizable. Make as many elements as possible moveable and resizeable. For instance in the Firefox window I am using right now, I'd love to have my tab bar be vertical instead of horizontal. I'd love to have a search button that expands into a search box when I mouse over it. I'd love to resize the button bar and search bar. I'd love to be able to reposition the scroll bar into a two buttons on the top of the page so that one button allows smooth scrolling up and the other allows smooth scrolling down. Can I do any of this? Nope - I'm not a programmer or expert in GUI design, but I'm an extensive user of this GUI and I know what would make it easier to use. A way for the enduser to easily move, resize and re-align elements would be a huge step in user friendliness of GUIs. Even in the games I play, that's one of the nicest things to be able to do - I love that in WoW I was able to fully customize my UI. In LoTR Online, I can move and resize all the UI elements just by holding down a button. It's really sad when game interfaces end up being more customizable and user friendly than actual apps we use far more often.
