  1. Re:Yet another Apple "standard" on Apple To Unveil Light Peak, New MacBook Pros This Week? · · Score: 1

Apple has always been really good at getting customers to move forward, by dropping legacy systems. You might not like it, but it generally turns out for the best. If Apple hadn't done the USB switch, we'd likely still be stuck with floppies, parallel printers and scanners, and miscellaneous serial devices.

But Apple's serial connectors were neither proprietary nor crap. They were RS-422, with a DIN standard connector. It was much easier to deal with serial connections on a Macintosh than on anything else at the time.

ADB was an Apple-developed standard, much better than PS/2 or AT keyboard connections, and much better than PS/2 mouse connections. One port, daisy chainable, and you could put a mouse, keyboard, graphics tablet, and trackball on the same port at the same time. They weren't supposed to be hot-pluggable, but unlike PS/2, hot plugging worked. And Apple wasn't the only manufacturer to use it.

GeoPort was just an extension to the RS-422 ports, and non-GeoPort devices worked just fine in those ports.

Why would you plug your mouse into the computer on an iMac? The keyboard had two USB ports, you plug your mouse in one, leaving you one free port on the computer and one on the keyboard.

Apple has made some dick moves, this wasn't one of them.

There was no appeal, the trial judge set aside the jury verdict by granting a motion for dismissal that was filed and apparently not considered before the jury ruled.

Since there wasn't an appeal, there is no precedent either way. The verdict can sort of be looked at, but legally it's pretty irrelevant. The US Attorney could have appealed, but didn't. I'd make a guess that was because the trial judge had ruled the law used against Lori Drew was unconstitutional, which isn't that common at the trial level and frequently means that law doesn't have much of a chance in an appeals court. They probably didn't want to risk setting a precedent that would cost them a bullying tool...

Health care, because it should be an equal-access right for all, and everyone will need it at some point, also provided by the government.

There's nothing misleading about it. Windoze 7 is just windoze NT 6.1 - a service pack for Vista (NT6.0), which as we all know is a failed attempt to rewrite XP (NT 5.1), which is just a facelift of 2000 (NT5.0), which is a marginal improvement on NT. It's not a new product, it's an incremental change to a bad operating system released in 1993.

Office 2010 is yet another bloat addition to their same old office product that's demonstrably a worse product than when Excel and Word were introduced in 1985 and powerpoint in 1987 on the Macintosh. The current user interface on windoze is garbage, it would benefit greatly from bringing back menus. It's somewhat better on the Mac, but it really needs a serious bloat trimdown.

Actually, first thing REQUIRE calculators starting early in elementary school.

We don't make a carpenter learn to put in a nail using a rock before we hand him a nail gun, and we shouldn't be teaching children with the assumption that they have to do things without the appropriate tools either. We should be teaching how the tool works, but once very basic addition and subtraction have been covered to explain the process, a student should NEVER be without a calculator.

Ban teaching multiplication tables. That will free up quite a bit of time for more advanced math.
