To be realistic, the odds of the game equivalent of "Clerks" isn't that high. It'd probably be more likely become more the equivalent of local cable broadcast short you ask your friends to watch... but heh it is still a movie.
Don't wait to get into the *big* game company before making your game. You don't need to. (Though the game companies for financial reasons would try to tell you you need them to make a game/any game.)
Besides, if that is your goal anyway, having even tried to make a handful of little (though not Final Fantasy's) games give you a better chance of joining such companies anyway.
I am very active with a small "Indie" Game Development group that I devote a lot of time helping, giving coding (and non-coding) help and imput. And many people in this group are no more staffed than your description, and they are making (and not all PC!) games.
You are all talented. You have a lot of potential. It would be great to see what you all pull together.

I witness a wierd parallel of "defeatism" here as I see in those "why aren't there more women in coding/tech" articles post.
First, I want to let you know know I empathize with both groups.
For the small (lone) guy really wanting to make a game, it is true that box office/financially/content-wise it is hard to *compete* against the big-guys.
For the woman wanting "to get in", I know it can be harsh to have to be 10 times better to be evaluated at 10 times worse.
See, I have been at *both* places at the same time!
I have always wanted to make games.
Back then, everybody also believed that it takes a lot of people to paint background paintings for King Quest-like (or even Wing Commander-like) games.
I worked for one of those *big* companies being told the best hope I have is to be widget tool coder for these monolith content projects.
I didn't give up hope.
I have my day job coding. I keep making my (admittedly amateur) side technology and 3D game projects on the side any time I have.
I didn't do it thinking I have a chance in h*ll competing against big art teams.
I did it because I love coding and I love games.
And that's what all of you can do too.
Same with the women.
Sure it's tough, and anyone (including me:) )telling you it's not it's not saying the whole truth.
So don't do it to *survive* the guys/environment.
Do to for the love. For the love of math. For the love of code. (For the love of game if you are coding games.)
When you do it for the love, it would stop to *matter* whether it competes against Final Fantasy or Soul Caliber. You would be making something to run on your DC, or you future PS2, or your future Dolphin (I admit that's truly a tougher one... but I content (offline perhaps?:) ) that you can still hack DC and even future PS2 on home budgets).

Agree that UDP is highly unreliable, with flimsy checksum as semblance of data confirmation...
but in case of game data (admitted a limited application) we really don't need uber hand-shaking at TCP/IP level for continuous broadcast of position delta baseline difference.
UDP is the minimalist approach to small packet (high data to header ratio) sending... great for game communication... foolhardy for everything else
I am coding to UDP right now, and am perfectly happy, though I am not maintaining life threatening data across the universe:)

Given the flexible pixel pipe of PS2 and Dolphin, I actually see greater potential for "demo hack" on such platforms, than future of PC hacks.
PC HW is pushing to the point of most PC demos now run the mill of overlaying (emulate accumulation buffer) translucent tri: particle, continual overlay until overbright.
PC HW is encouraging that direction.
PS2 and Dolphin pipeline architecture OTOH has much greater potential for "demo creation"... back to in old days when "demo making" is about creative visual display, not overlaying more translucent tris.
DC hacking may have a few dissimilarities from PSX hacking.
DC has a slightly lower "technology" point of entry.
DC's API makes a greater attempt to be similar to desktop gfx development, than PSX (given in PSX debut time-frame, there are fewer desktops besides niche SGI to be x-platform with).
DC has more x-platform (from desktop to DC) titles.
Early attempts can be unauthorized hack ports from desktop. hax0rs who already did the work on desktop version can leverage the R&D (mostly submission of random hex value:) ) and try their luck on DC version.

good UDP points (way OT now :) )
Thought the biggest network improvement (from my current experience ) is minimize data packet transmission necessity itself as much as possible.
Higher order encapsulation, leave more to the client. The concept of progressive layer of abstraction, matching that of data throughput speed.
Baseline is good last line of defense to send even fewer packets.
All the points you describe on what happens when you HAVE to send the packet is valid.
But the greatest improvement in smoothness of network play comes from not even sending the packets in the first place.

So many of you smart males claim that women want this, women like this, women are like that.
Have you noticed that if you turn it around, a lot of *men* have these characteristics?
i.e.
1. women are dropping us because they can't see past our unkempty geek appearance, etc.
Can you men see pass a chick in a 3-day old OpenGL shirt because she has been crunching 72 hours coding without sleep on caffeine?
How is that a supposedly "woman" characteristics when a lot of men are equally visually superficial?

How many men pass over best gal pal for a woman that most of their friends tell them, heh your best gal pal is much better looking, she is much smarter, she is actually much nicer to you, for that actually less attractive more stupid woman who you have to work at and chase after?
What is the manisfestation that men want the hard to get? Their continual need of approval from mainstream mag that their OS is cool. From rockstar that they dig their geek hobby. From celeb actor star that they are into their favorite computer.
Not good enough Torvald or RMS think something is cool. Need to earn the approval of Regis Philbin or something. Why? Because Torvald and RMS are not hard to get. Mainstream attention is.
And also thusly the remote hard to get hard to approach "mainstream normal chick" who if she loves you mean you are not so nerdy.

Encounter a woman with this characteristics, and the typical reaction is: "What a bimbo" "What a stupid woman" She could for all you know nuclear physicist cum VLSI developer cum optimization goddess.
But most women and men won't be able to see pass her "apparent bimbo-ness/stupidity" to think she is "not intelligent" enough to warrant friendship/association.
Such irony.
All the women you think are too bimbo/stupid to be in your league may be the super genious girl you "claim" to want.
But the ones you end up with are medium-intelligence women who fulfill artificial societal definitions of intelligence (able to drive, able to buy milk in the super market, able to open a bank account, can spell worth a damn).
So, no, most men who CLAIM they want an extremely intelligent woman are lying.
Especially if getting such a smart woman means the "sacrifice" that they have to have a "bimbo" who appears absentminded.

Just code really hard, develop a lot, "sell" out, make tons of cash (purchasing something blatant like luxury car and expensive house can help), and there is a large enough population of women euthemistically called "gold diggers" who would even PRETEND to be interested in what you are interested in, serve you at your beck and call, as long as you marry them.
For male geeks, your intelligence, once translated to currency, will buy you your companionship. At a high enough monetary threshold, you cannot even beat off the opposite sex who wants to share the loot.

Agree that UDP is highly unreliable, with flimsy checksum as semblance of data confirmation
but in case of game data (admitted a limited application) we really don't need uber hand-shaking at TCP/IP level for continuous broadcast of position delta baseline difference.
UDP is the minimalist approach to small packet (high data to header ratio) sending

Resp to several posts of it takes too many people, game-making not for the masses, hobbyist anymore.
At the same time, open source and broadband collaborative code development have also gained a lot more experience in the past few years.
Hobbyist/game dev enthusiast now has at their disposal greater range of libraries to get started with (required to do less from scratch).
If it truly does take 20 to 30 people for 3 to 4 years, then why not start a web/net hacking open source project and get enough coding man power?

Given the flexible pixel pipe of PS2 and Dolphin, I actually see greater potential for "demo hack" on such platforms, than future of PC hacks.
... back to in old days when "demo making" is about creative visual display, not overlaying more translucent tris.
PC HW is pushing to the point of most PC demos now run the mill of overlaying (emulate accumulation buffer) translucent tri: particle, continual overlay until overbright.
PC HW is encouraging that direction.
PS2 and Dolphin pipeline architecture OTOH has much greater potential for "demo creation"

The great thing about an objective achievement field like ours (technology/math/computing) is that we can concentrate our efforts in development/producing. We can ignore their paltry game of social protocol.
An alternate cultural protocol that :
1. emphasize objective/measurable knowledge, ability and development
2. based on dry exchange of data and learning
3. removes/eliminates insincerity, flirting, double entendre
4. place appearance on lower hierarchy than knowledge, thought and analysis
does not mean boring, or even non-/anti-social
There are enough of us, men and women, though called geeks or nerds by mainstream, that it is a viable community of intellectual freindship.
We are steeped in (and enjoy) something greater and deeper in that of communion of pure thoughts and understanding.
The rest of them can go pick up at the bar, read playboy (or go to the playboy mansion party), watch sitcom, post double-entendres on msgboard, call themselves by sexually provocative (but misleading in availability indication)handles.
We can stick to our flirt-free, double-entendre-free exchange on 11th dimension M-Strings, photo-based rendering, or virtual machines.
P.S. Ignore the insincere (though mainstream attractive) blond who criticizes your (and my) lack of cheminstry, and make friends with those sincere prim Indian female mathematician IIT Ph.D. grads.

I used to think the most optimized route to nutrient/dinner/meal (to maximize coding time) is microwave burrito.
... those meal as liquid gulch in a can things ... just drink like diet coke.

... which gives more time to code and /. .
Little did I realize, that microwave time could be eliminated.
I discover liquid lunch
Thusly, save even microwave time. (ah that microwave steak thing is just for Christmas, no such luxury in normal months.)
The time saving is quite cool. You can drink your meal in one hand and code with your other.
It is relatively economical. Sure it tastes horrible, but so does Diet Coke, which I drink all the time.

I finally trained my tastebuds to be acclimatized to ucky tasting liquid lunch
Wonder if anyone has (realistic) equally and more optimized route to dinner/lunch/nutrient than this idea.
