That's all well and good, but there is no "Linux" like their is a "Windows" or an "OS X". There are numerous different distributions with their own idiosyncrasies; Different package managers, different kernel versions, different UIs, different x, y, z. You can't make a game for "Linux" unless you can compile it yourself on your own machine, and that's not something the big game publishers are too hot on.
Throw your iPod in the nearest bin and get a device which supports mounting as removeable storage? Hell, you can use most smartphones as media players and portable hard drives now, especially with 32GB MicroSD cards available.
I've gamed on WINE. WoW framerates were actually better than in Windows xp.
It took me three attempts at installing different WINE versions, editing config files (of both WINE and WoW), various CLI commands I can't remember, hours of forum posts (around 60% being "Go back to Windows, noob" or similar) and a couple of hours loitering in IRC channels waiting for someone to finally reply with a URL I'd already visited.
I use Windows because I like gaming on my PC, and "user" support for Linux is shit. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing; Just stating fact.
I was walking from college to the local town when the first plane hit the WTC. That's a 10 minute walk. As soon as I entered the town I knew something was up, as the local TV stores were rammed and the streets were empty. I walked into the store I was heading for and the guy on the till said "A plane's just been flown into the World Trade Centre."
I waited for a bus, 15 minute ride and 5 minute walk to my mate's house to watch the news, and I still saw the second plane hit live.
I live on the other side of the Atlantic. News spreads REALLY fast.
I'll take the 30 second warning. That's just about enough time to walk into the next room and tell your significant other that you love them before it's all over.
I'll take that over post-apocalypse wasteland any day of the week.
I have friends who have exactly this plan in mind. One is currently a secondary level science teacher, the other an Eastern Bloc / Asia specialist for a high-class tourism company. They plan on moving to China to teach English. You get paid UK-level wages, but pay China prices for everything. You're effectively a local millionaire.
Yes. You're supposed to flog your employees into working 80 / 90 hour weeks for months on end, vainly attempting to meet impossible deadlines imposed by vapid PHB's with a blood tie to the CEO, causing them to burn out after 3 years, at which point you hire another slew of meat to fill your chairs. Rinse, repeat.
I facepalm every time I rescue that dude from the dungeon in Old HIllsbrad. Hey there, Mr SuperAwesomeShaman, why not smack that horse upside the rump and have it get a shift on? I'm tired of waiting for your slow ass!
IW were thinking "Ok, so MW2 made us a boatload of cash. Let's do the same thing again with some cosmetic changes, and limit the bad press from the vocal minority by including a dedicated server option. I predict a further boatload of cash! Hookers and blow all round!"
You've pretty much proved the GP's point; You've taken a slender, fast, and efficient browsing experience and added the bloat which put me off your competitors for so long, for no other reason than "they're doing it, therefore we should".
I used to use Firefox as my main browser, with IE for pages which were broken (and this was very infrequent). Now that addons are broken every month, JS execution is much faster in Chrome, and I don't particularly want to have three browsers installed on my system, Chrome has replaced FF, and I think a lot of people have done the same.
Take back development to where it should be; Concentrate on making the browser fast, sleek, and efficient, not bloated and resource hogging like the others.
You would have found it if you read the title: "In Favor of FreeBSD On the Desktop":-D
You mean the title of the stub? That's not the title of TFA:
"Why aren't you using FreeBSD?
FreeBSD is a free, fast, stable, feature-rich operating system. If you've never looked into it before, you should."
Granted you have to read the first paragraph to see that he's writing about servers, but surely that's not too much to ask for a story submission. At no point through the entire article does the author mention BSD on a desktop computer. Only servers.

Like you, I suffer from Stockholm Syndrome.
Nuh uh. Stockholm Syndrome is when an abducted person feels sympathy for their captor. You're describing simple masochism. Weirdo.
I call shenanigans. Nobody used Windows ME; It was inflicted upon them as retrospective punishment for some future crime you may not commit.

Do yourself a favour and get Windows 7. Skip 8, like the rest of the business world will. Metro UI and app stores on the desktop need to die horribly.

Let me guess... Argent Dawn?

Somewhere in Azeroth, Thrall is facepalming.

Trust in the dread god Freem'Arkhet to handle everything!
If not, appeal to his wife; Courtney Cox.
Blacker than the blackest black, times infinity

No, I had to look up who Liv Tyler played in LotR; I couldn't remember the character's name. I was stuck thinking of LotR when I wrote the post.
Mmmmm... Elfin ears.

I have a 4'x4' print of the Phantom's face on my wall.
Yes, we know who the Phantom is in the West.
Fuck, Sean Bean was in LOTR, not Armageddon. I should have said Mr Pink.
God damn it, learn to hit Preview and read your own posts.
... at the asteroid.
I vote for Bruce Willis. He did alright the last time around in that other documentary with Sharpe and that Arwen chick.
Are you telling me that this is all an elaborate Minecraft advertising stunt?
That's a screen grab from a 240p Youtube video of an Alien egg.
What don't they want us to see?!
Not in a single place does the article advocate that any variant of BSD is appropriate for the desktop, even Apple's.
FTFY. The article does not comment on desktop OS's at all, save that the author uses Linux on the desktop.
I'm going to be generous and assume that this was a genuine mistake.

Not once did I read any phrase relating to *BSD on the desktop. He specifically says "Linux on the desktop, BSD on the server".
Very well done, editors.
