For a company that was many times thought of as doomed, they finally seem to have gotten a sense of direction. I think they can do great things from here...I can't wait to see what their next move is. They seem to have something planned.
I gave NP a try a while ago. Basically its a frontend to IE's renderer, which blows, therefore NP does too. The interface is ridiculous - it uses the lizard-brain 'channel' analogy, which failed miserably with MS's channel bar.
Why doesn't this company put some effort into actually making a competitive BROWSER, instead of making a skin for an older, crappy one? If someone is wanting a new browser experience on the Win32 platform, give Opera a shot. At least they're doing something new - it works better than both IE and Netscape, and trounces them both in standards-compliance.
I've had bad experiences using x11amp with OSS - that was the first time I've seen BSD crash and burn. We're talking "play, play, play, skip, skip, poof! reboot."
NetBSD: Best for overall hardware support across different architectures. OpenBSD: Emphasis on security-related issues. FreeBSD: Best overall x86 support, and has the greatest number of ports.
They all work great - I would suggest starting with Free, and move on from there, especially if you're wanting a workstation OS. I tried Open for a while, and it has some great features, but the security features started to burn me out, and the lack of documentation. Haven't honestly tried Net yet
I don't know if these practices are standard, but it seems pretty arrogant to redefine a theatre's means of operation for the honor of showing a Lucasfilm movie. I hope someone organizes a protest, or at least an organized complaint to Lucas.
Even if this were true, they were using a microsoft Client to talk to a Microsoft server, and using samba instead of something like NFS. It stands to reason that a Microsoft file server doing Microsoft file serving might perform better than a Linux box doing Microsoft file serving. I wonder how the tests would have turned out if all of the clients were Linux boxes, and a non-MS oriented file server setup were used.

Just think how cool it would be to have this at home! If it worked nearly as well as speech recognition, just think of the capabilities our PCs would have - going through hours of 'expression training', only to have your computer ask you "Why so angry?" when, in fact, you are yawning.
When I was young, my parents stressed to me that I was responsible for my own actions. I think this is something most good parents do. I still believe that no matter what your 'influences', you are the only one ultimately responsible for what you do. Sure, if you have the natural tendency towards psychotic behavior, or are somehow inclined that way, violence in media will encourage you. That doesn't change the fact that there is something wrong with the influenced person to begin with.
Anyone who is influenced towards violent behavior by violence in the media is an unstable person and is dangerous to begin with. And if anyone has to be blamed for this crime, it should be the parents for failing to instill in their child responsibility, forethought, and morality. The legal system should not be tied up with people trying to blame influences on parties that are much less responsible than the obvious - the parents.
These kids don't know what poverty is. They had food. They had a place to live. They had jobs and a car, albeit not a very good one. Oh, what a hard life...
This is really what people on Slashdot are like? That's pretty disappointing. I can't see why it is that Katz thought these 2 were fit to write about. I understand what its like to not have much money, and I can relate to their lives growing up. However, they need to grow the hell up. Is no one else offended by the fact that the bulk of their existence is involved with criminal activity?
I can't believe they have the nerve to talk about character. If they think somehow they automatically have character because they've had a rough life, they have no clue what character is. Stealing software, music, making fake IDs, those activities don't do much to indicate any character at all. All that is ok, of course, because they didn't have a priveleged upbringing. The world owes them, and they shouldn't have to pay for things like everyone else.
By choice, they have no friends, no social skills, and feel such pity for themselves as to compare the internet to heroin. That's bullshit. There's nothing addictive about the internet. If you choose to sit around all day on-line in chat rooms and think that somehow makes you smarter than people who watch tv all day, you've got problems.
What scares me even more is that there are people like this actually entering the job force. This is not who I want to see working for a consulting firm. A couple of elitist punks who have no social skills, no morals, and a completely warped view of the world.
It makes me sick that John Katz somehow thinks this kind of lifestyle is worthy of glamourizing. If this is the kind of people geeks are, I guess I was mistaken in thinking I was a geek.
Ok, so the guy's a bit of a moron in some ways, but name me a president who wasn't a buffoon? If the guy gets elected, he probably will spend a decent amount of money on technology, which is a good thing. And, he'll probably keep us entertained.
The point of the UDI as I understand it is to make drivers work on multiple OSes, not to make them work for Linux users. As far as I know, Linux is the only OS that uses the Linux kernel.
Not me. I'm rather quiet pin-tail duck, and I'm sick of getting confused with people who exploit poor computer security! Wake up, media! Make up a different term for those people. We had it first.
I don't think the intent of the virus WAS malicious. How was he to know it would spread so quickly? If it was going to be malicious, why didn't he have it send mail to ALL of the people in the address book? It seems to me that he was trying to pull a little prank, and he grossly overestimated the intelligence of the majority of the computer-using population. And what's wrong with 40 years of gay sex? I know people who've had 40 years of it, they aren't complaining...
That's honestly a great idea...an internet not vulnerable to regulation or cluelessness. I'd wondered how to do that before, but it mostly involved running wires all over the place illegally or starting a telco.:)
Sweden is pretty darn socialist, I think, and they seem to be doing ok. And frankly, in the case of N. Korea, Russia, etc., most of the damage has been done by capitalists trying to destroy them. Yup, Russia seems to be doin ok with its brand new capitalist system. Fixed 'em right up.
Why are you people so afraid of oss being called communistic? What's so bad about being communist? Are you people still believing everything you're told in school? There are other socio-economic models that are proven effective other than capitalism.

The code's all there...why don't the Linux folks just take it? When something is developed for BSD, its developed for the entire software community.

It's worth pointing out at this point that BSD has binary compatibility with Linux...so if there's a binary available, chances are, it'll work.

Ok, so I did my research, and, sure enough, the Merriam-Webster dictionary agrees with you. However, I searched the GNU website, and found this -
"To avoid horrible confusion, please pronounce the `G' in the word `GNU' when it is the name of this project. "
So, I guess I've been mispronouncing the name of the animal for all these years, and getting the project name right...:)
