For watching the movie, leaving my phone in my pocket, and not talking to anyone?
Someone is going to punch me in the face for that? Man I really need to recalibrate my views on rudeness and societal expectations.
$8 for a ticket. Where are you going? I might need to move there. Cheapest I've found for a non-matinee is $11.50 or $12. Hell even my hometown, a mid-size Midwestern city, clocks in with $10 per theater.
I don't use my phone during the movie.... because I am watching a movie and giving my full attention. If I'm going to pay $12 to sit in a room for two hours, it makes sense to get my money's worth.
I don't look at my phone during movies. I watch the movie. It's not my fault you have a crappy attention span and are easily distracted by shiny things.
I've found I rarely hear anything because the sounds of the movie generally drown out any ambient noise. The volume for movie theaters is usually far louder than necessary in my experience, but that is a different conversation entirely.
I've had people near me use their cells during a movie. It's only a big distraction if you focus on their phone instead of the movie. My advice would be to watch the movie.
Yes because I am not blind and own a smartphone. If someone is bothered by a phone screen's brightness during a movie, it sounds like they aren't paying attention to the right screen.
I have never, ever noticed this, not in a single movie. Talking on the phone would definitely be a problem, but I've never seen this either. Frankly I don't really give a shit if people are texting or surfing on their phone during the movie. I'm looking ahead at the screen. I find it hard to believe that it should really bother someone that much.
But don't all students have a humanities requirement? Why is this even worth writing, let alone worth posting to slashdot? Is he trying to require upper level humanities classes?
I got a BA and a BS (not in engineering but Info Sys equivalent), so I already had required humanities classes taken care of. However my BS required 15 credits of humanities/ethics/social science.
I stopped using it awhile back for a few reasons:
1) They killed off the Linux version instead of the OS X version, despite having a larger market share from Linux AND getting 2-3x as much contributed code-wise from Linux as opposed to Mac. Normally I am fully understanding of catering to the larger user base, but this seemed like a bad idea.
2) They dropped iPod device support after version 1.3. Seriously if I wanted to continue using it as an iTunes alternative, which they were pitching it as, I had to be able to manage my music with it as well. Signing up to support Zune was an idiotic idea, but they could have at least released the source code to let someone fork the add-on.
I guess it really comes down to great idea, (usually) bad execution.
When I lived in Germany you couldn't buy a pre-paid phone from a store without ID, passport if you were a foreigner, or maybe it was just the SIM. No one every checked if you were just purchasing minutes though and you didn't have to register a privately purchased phone as long as you had a SIM card.
Circa 2003 and 2007 respectively
Develop hobbies, spend time with family, and work on expanding your technical skills.
Fuck even if you don't want to do any of those, just catch up on some TV or something. Read a book. How did you pass your time before you got this position?
Actually a lot of states allow lethal defense to prevent a forcible felony (or even a felony) in some states. Illinois, not exactly a bastion of vigilantism or lax gun laws, only requires felony theft/burglary to invoke castle law "self-defense." That means you can basically shoot anyone who breaks into your home if there is more than $500 worth of stuff in your apartment/house.
I'm condescendingly responding to a stupid question. I assume that's why people thought it was funny. I certainly didn't expect it to be rated like it was.
No I meant running my freezer. Hence the reason I typed:
"I always wanted to have a computer running my freezer"
instead of
"I always wanted to have a computer running IN my freezer"

That's what the movie is for.

Like I said, it hasn't bothered me when people do it, and I've seen people texting through an entire movie. They were a few rows away though
Any of the theaters in downtown Chicago. I regularly attend all screenings of every movie, so feel free to walk into every show and look for me.
Yeah a laser pointer would be really unacceptable.
I do not have access to a chainsaw, rusty or otherwise, so I will have to miss out on that experience.

It's like this in Chicago at most of the movie theaters I have gone to

I haven't had that issue when people have taken out their phones to text or check the time.

It's doubtful that'd you'd have the necessary strength to do so, but I applaud the aggression. Rapists are the worst sort of scum

This is about as surprising as either Bush, Obama, or any future/past president violating some type of civil right in a severe fashion
