That kind of thing would make perfect sense to try to do if your goal was setting up a system to make it as easy as possible to spy on as many people as possible just in case it might be helpful one day. Its simple and will pay for itself. Why not take advantage?

Khm, doctor said: "try it", so let's buy 15 instead of 30 (for half the price) and come for more only if it actually helps.

That might not always be a good idea, some drugs need to be taken for a certain amount of time before they start to work. You should probably have asked the doctor or looked up what the prescribed drug is supposed to be doing before deciding something like this, or else you may just be completely wasting your money.

  5. Re:Politics of health care on Why Doctors Hate Science · · Score: 1

I don't know about you, but I go to doctor's because they know alot more about something I need than I do myself. If a doctor told me to buy some prescription drug to "see if it helps", I would get pretty pissed and look at switching doctors. I'm not beyond reporting them either, depending on the situation. I have a very healthy respect for doctors, but pawning medicine that _might/maybe/possibly_ helps is just moronic. I can do that without the help of a doctor. Your reasoning is odd in three ways; So the example here is acid reflux.

So the baby had some symptoms, the doctor thought that the most common cause of those is what we call acid reflux, so made that diagnosis and suggested a treatment. Maybe its not acid reflux but something with similar symptoms and the best (cheap, least side effects, etc) way to find out is to first try a treatment known to work for acid reflux. Acid reflux can be caused by a number of things, maybe some drugs work better than others depending upon the cause and to find out the actual cause would require sticking a camera down the patients throat or doing surgery and taking a biopsy of the esophagus or stomach, etc. Maybe some people have different genes and so respond differently to the possible drugs that could be used. Maybe theres something in the patients diet or environment that will affect how well the treatment works, but noone has figured out what it is yet.
    So you must either
    1) Only go to doctors that will act like they are 100 percent sure they know what is going on and what is the best treatment for you, whether or not they have any doubts.
    or
    2) Pay millions of dollars and spend months of time for any diagnosis in order to get your DNA sequenced, have someone follow you around noting all possible environment variables, and subject yourself to all sorts of intrusive examinations before you allow yourself to be treated.

So what i said above was just supposed to be in passing because really what you post to slashdot means what amounts to nothing in the big scheme of things. I mean i can't even know if its true or not since my entire knowledge of you is based on like 4 things you said on an internet forum. But you seem like good people so I'll spend the time to try to explain myself since I'd want someone to do that for me.

Now the recounting of what occurred:

    1) You quoted Equilibrium (which I've never seen but am downloading now and will probably like) and then said something to the effect of being enlightened allows you to not fit into the structure of society which is a threat to the powers that be since (enter something I induced from context and your reference to "a cage full of shit painted gold")you dont just spend all your time and effort trying to accumulate material things.

2)Someone else asked why its better to be attached to getting high rather than a material thing. A response only tangentially relevant to the point you had just made but in tune with the way the whole thread was going. Still an interesting question even though its also begging the question and a real answer would deal with the meaning of the word attached and all that.

3)You saw that the previous poster had made the assumption (rereading it he could have just been comparing smoking pot to buying cool toys and not made the assumption at all.. but on first glance thats how it read to me) that people must pursue happiness by either 1) doing drugs or 2) spending money on material goods. In response you gave a mini life story stressing how unattached to both getting high and material things you are... allusions to your level of spiritual development peppered throughout.

4)I read your post as giving your own existence as anecdotal evidence against the "either pot or tv" hypothesis... claiming instead that striving for spiritual completeness (or something). I'm not really sure what spiritual growth is, my best guess would be its something close to consistently having very lucid thoughts about yourself and the world around you... but like you said the experience of it is apparently not something you can explain to someone. Anyway I took this to be you purporting your nonmaterialistic, drug free way of life to be a path to spiritual growth (see my interpretation above) which in turn leads to happiness.

    5) The thinking behind post: Anecdotal evidence that involves the arguer being better in some way than those they are arguing against is never a good way to convince people of something, regardless of whether its true or not, it makes you come off as pompous and people don't like pompous people. If I can see that and you can't, you probably aren't as spiritually developed (once again this ride on my definition of spiritually developed) compared to the average dude as you think. Anyway like I said it should be understood that the only context I had for what you posted is... what you posted, and I guess the fact that its on slashdot. So its all just supposed to be food for thought or whatever.

Well I mean...how would you measure consciousness with just a brain? You need some sort of intelligible sensory input and a way for the brain to output intelligent behavior that you could measure. You can keep brain cells alive after the organism dies and stimulate them electrically to study the effect doing this at certain amplitudes/frequencies has on down/up stream neurons, but that couldn't tell you anything about what function those neurons were involved in or anything. The use of diseased brains is to compare them with healthy brains and each other to localize where things went wrong and due to what kind of abnormality (I guess thats the physiological studies you mentioned). AFAIK this requires the cells to be dead due to staining/preservative/etc procedures.

You're talking about Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome and Swyer Syndrome. In a nutshell, the answer is once you have an XY chromosome (decided during conception) you cannot get a normal female. Although one of the X-chromosomes is mostly silenced, there are genes that aren't. Some of these are the same as genes on the Y chromosome which means two copies are needed for proper development, and some are those unique to the X chromosome and required in two copies for proper female development (i don't know which... probably something to do with estrogen levels). Since there is only one copy of these/this gene(s) in XY cells you don't get proper female development (Swyer Syndrome). On the other hand you can get a male that looks mostly like a female if you have a non-functioning SRY gene on the Y chromosome which prevents testes development (and hence don't have any, or very little, cells that express the genes for the enzymes necessary produce testosterone), or if you have a malfunctioning androgen receptor (genes on the X chromosome) a male won't have a copy of it and as a result will be insensitive to the testosterone released. This leads to what looks like a female but with internal testes, etc (Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome).
