I always assumed higher clockspeeds would eventually give way to lower power and slower speeds in future chips. First to go was SMP. Now it's clockspeed.
Obviously at 1.2 Ghz Intel has stepped back from the speed deamon days of 1.4Ghz P4's and started retooling for lower power consumption and portability. Those of us who want to crunch numbers will have to spend big bucks for mainframish chips with weird names and companies with 3 letter names.

Whew. More feminine eh. Amazing how times change. I remember when being a "supermom" and having the husband sacrifice his career to be with the daughter was the rage. Everyone thought there would be female computer scientists and presidents of countries. Now bring up so much as the idea of a female CEO and people call you a child abuser. It's almost like the 80's never were.
No warranty, not even fitness for a particular purpose should have been enough but unfortunately the GPL doesn't protect you from reality.
Just as the MPAA beat the shit out of the kid in Germany, Adobe will beat the shit out of this next kid in Germany, and after that users will start suing programmers for bugs. It's not about licenses. It's about money.
Sounds like the kind of brain surgery you have when you're going to die
anyway but don't want to throw away your insurance.
"Cash burn" eh. Are these new economic theories patented or open source?
There's no doubt that VA Linux will be going out of business within the year. The
software business never made money to begin with and now they're just
shooting for a gentle slide into the ocean instead of an abrupt crash.
Must say that enough Linux sites exist to virtually obliviate the need for anything but sourceforget on their OSDN hodgepodge. Unfortunately, when sourceforget goes, it'll be the 10th hosting provider I've had to relocate off of since the internet began.
ATI gives out source code for its Radeon drivers. NVidia does not. NVidia's chips are 3 generations ahead of ATI.
Now 5 years after the hoopla, one screenshot of a 320x240 camelion that looks like a movie, and 500 layoffs later, let's all say it in unison, "who gives a fuck if NVidia doesn't release any source code!"
In other words a lot of gifted EE's in Massachussets are getting creamated. Must say
the Alpha had the fastest memory bandwidth, even faster than AMD 760 DDR. Now I'll have to get a real VCR for recording movies like everyone else.
Thought this had something with the 50% staff reduction VA is having on Wednesday. For a moment it looked like CmdrTaco got fired and crashed the server on his way out or something. Fortunately now we can read all about the latest conspiracy to spam email.
This looks like it's about to become a repeat of the VHS releases which came out in the 80's. They released the first few episodes and gave up. Unfortunately not many people are going to want just the first 12 episodes this time either. Without much demand for the first 12 episodes they won't see a need to finish the series.
The second 2 generations were in some ways better than Macross. They got rid of the bimbo and the warrior women had a much bigger role. My favorite scene is still Rick Hunter telling Lynn Bimbo to go stick it, but the bravery of Dana Sterling and Lisa Hayes was irreplacable. You could never write a female character as self sacrificing for the fate of the universe as Lisa Hayes into a show today.
Rook Bartley seemed more aligned with the modern heroine, more concerned with seeking revenge for some wrong done to her by a man than saving the world, but brave nonetheless.
Makes me feel sorry for the guys still there. It's hard to imagine 4 months reading layoff rumors every day, goung to sleep not knowing if the lifestyle you've known for the last 3 years will still exist tomorrow, every day being another test of faith, my bad memory being their way of life for 4 months. Wonder if the second round will get severance packages.
Most CD's only have one polycarbonate layer below the aluminum. The aluminum itself is the label.
Why Xena could beat the crap out of Lara Croft
on
Review: Tomb Raider
·
· Score: 1
Unlike most heroines, Xena doesn't expect anything from anybody. Lara Croft expects men to win the bread. She expects to fall off the rope bridge and wait for a man to save her.
Xena doesn't rely on men to provide her every clue on how to do something. Lara Croft lives in her dad's mansion and needs on her dad's love notes to find the focus ring on her binoculars.
Xena doesn't weigh 60 lbs and vibrate like a violin string in every gust of wind. Lara Croft needs to eat a sandwich.
Xena makes facial expressions and takes chances normally reserved for a male hero. Lara Croft just makes flirty expressions while lying on her boyfriend's naked chest.
Lara Croft earns partial income as a photojournalist. Xena supports herself and her sidekick fully and if she lived in 2001 she would be an engineer.
Because it shows how while most of the country expects men to win the bread, it's an almost psychotic obsession in Calif*rnia. You don't see any women in homeless shelters because
#1 unless they God forbid want to become engineers they can't live here unless they're married to a male breadwinner who can pay the mortgage and
#2 the wives expect R.E.S.U.L.T.S. Marriage in CA 2001 means wife not having to enlist in the workforce at all.
#3 in order to cut the mustard their wives expect, the male breawinner has to be so competitive as to never get laid off, a kind of super edgy provider.
You ever see The Grapes of Wrath? Well that kind of thing is happening now, thousands of programmers coming here in search of better luck. Houses in Pleasanton which sold for $1 million in 2000 are now selling for $2 million. Houses in Conta Costa County sell for $1.5 million where in 2000 they were only $1 million. An equivalent rise happened in rent, with most places rising 18%.

I know we're supposed to be moving away from desktops and to handheld devices but what if there was a way to reuse an old AMD 450 as a car mp3 system. The biggest problem is rapid startup and shutdown while retaining state and without corrupting the filesystem but I'd be willing to buy the extra components if any still existed for desktops.
It was very prevalent in the 80's but since people became aware of it and took precautions you might say it never existed unless you lived in the 80's and saw it in person. Not many slashdotters probably remember the 80's.
Time for Microsoft to publish another web page about the XBox to boost moral. Everyone hates Microsoft when an article about big business arises but an X Box ad never fails to rally support.
NFS version Linux 2.4.4 SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS. They removed all the local caching and everything else in the name of security so that Linux NFS is now slower than a 28.8 modem for anything but mp3 storage. Thank God the NFS hackers haven't decided to fix XFree86. Tommorrow: why users of IDE under 2.4.4 experience premature death.
FVWM was good enough. Instead of pouring all those spring breaks and dead weeks into window manager/desktop environment/object brokerage/meaning of life environments the hackers of the world should have focused on writing applications for FVWM. The reason I got into UNIX was how little the large applications of the time were hindered by clumsy window managers.

Gabrielle became the wife of a husband and no longer works. At least Xena has a part time interest in not following Rob around all day like a hamster.
Or are Linux Tag travel expenses part of the "cash burn"? It's like watching Brewster's Millions in real life.
