Just log to a remote machine using syslog. Most people do this anyhow. That way if the firewall is compromised the logs are less likely to be altered and cover that compromise.

  8. Re:This already has been done - With Mortal Kombat on Sony In Deal For Networked Arcade Games · · Score: 1

I can certainly understand their desire to get a more solid revenue stream going. All the MK games were huge, I know I personally put probably $2000 or so in MK3, and I know of at least a dozen more people who did the same. Wavenet was fun, but the cost was just nuts. I'm sure the leased lines were pricy, especially because that was a while before the internet explosion. I wonder if the econmics will work out better now, with T-1s going for a fractions of what they used to..

  9. This already has been done - With Mortal Kombat 3 on Sony In Deal For Networked Arcade Games · · Score: 1

Didn't anyone ever play MK3 with Midway's WaveNet service? It was about $2 a play, and I only knew of about a half dozen arcades that had it. All the ones I know of are in Chicago, where Midway is based and tests their products. It could be that it never got out of testing, but it worked pretty well. The only thing missing was real time voice chat for trash talking your remote opponent. Golden Tee and others upload scores on a nightly basis as well.. I also saw some driving game recently (Rush 2012?) that let's you enter an account name and PIN to save your progress/unlocking of tracks/etc to a master database, accessible from any other location. This is definitely cool stuff, but I honestly don't see why it's necessary. Playing MK3 against someone in another arcade was a great novelty, but in reality I'd rather pay half the price and play a friend of mine, who I can talk trash to and make fune of when I w00p his arse. LAN games (ala Battletech, D&D, etc.) can definitely add a lot to the experience, but I don't see a real need for WAN gaming at this point.. unless they start making massively multiplayer arcade games.

I beg to differ. Stateful firewalling has been available under linux. Maybe not out of the box, but Checkpoint's FW-1 will run on linux and is indeed stateful. Maybe you meant to say that stateful firewalling was unavailable under linux for FREE, but that's not to say it wasn't available.

  13. What about Exchange 2000? on When Is Exchange Inappropriate For The Enterprise? · · Score: 1

Most of the people I see ripping on Exchange are talking about 4.0, 5.0, etc. Even 5.5 is better than these, but I haven't seen any mention of Exchange 2000. I know the community here is pretty *nix centric, and the knee jerk reaction is usually 'Microsoft bad!' but Exchange 5.5 is solid, and 2000 is much better. Sure there's outlook security problems, but if you block VBS files attachments and run a decent virus scanner you shouldn't have much trouble with these. The only problems I see with viruses on my 3500+ user exchange organization are in the hour or two between the time the virus hits and when there's new definitions available. I think the features Exchange brings the the table (calendar, task management, contact sharing, 3rd party and inhouse groupware) more than make up for this small point. As for hardware requirements, it sounds to me like people here just aren't configuring their boxes right. Exchange really likes to have the logs and database on seperate drive arrays, things like that. You can't expect to just install the software and have it work, but if you take the time to tune it, it can really scream. Probably not as fast as a *nix system, but it'll give you some nice features that you can't easily get on other systems. Also, there's the fact that a good deal of people we hire are already familiar with Outlook/Exchange. There's something to be said for that too.

  15. Potential uses for this... on TiVo Hacked to Include Ethernet · · Score: 2

... are much more than just downloading program guide data. In fact, most of the TiVo hacking community is against that, because it would probably bring retribution from TiVo. In my mind, the most useful feature to gain from an Ethernet card is an easy way to connect to my TiVo from the internet. It'd be great if I could schedule recordings from the office, handheld device, etc. I don't know how many times I've been at lunch talking about something that's coming up on TV and realized I forgot to set the TiVo to record it. If we can get even a PPP connection on the tivo, it should be a trivial matter to write code that'll accept commands and setup recordings based on those commands. Front end it with a web server and instant remote access to my TiVo! Aside from that, this could be tremendously useful for any other potential TiVo hackers who want quick and easy access to the shell (the console port is quite slow). Even without getting listings through broadband, there's some applications for this, and I'm sure there are several more I'm not even thinking of..
