  1. Re:What about the presumption of innocence? on Arizona "Papers, Please" Law May Hit Tech Workers · · Score: 1

What I find interesting about this whole situation is how drastically public opinion has changed in just over half a century. During the Red Scare and McCarthyism of the 50s, one of the major contrasts drawn between the Communist USSR and the 'Free' America was that in America, you were not required to carry or even show any kind of ID. Apparently this is no longer the case.

The big concern I have with this law is how it applies to a citizen who is stopped but not carrying papers/documents confirming their status. If I'm in AZ, as a US citizen, but I've decided to leave my driver's license, passport, etc at home, can I be arrested for not being able to confirm that I am indeed a citizen? Thats what this law seems to be doing. To me, this seems to contradict the decisions made in Hiibel vs Sixth Judicial Court of Nevada, wherein, simply giving your name is sufficient to satisfy a State's 'stop and identify' law in a detention, whereas having to produce an ID would violate the US Constitution.

    Hooray for Fascism!!

FYI, Europe isnt a country. There are many countries in Europe, and management of healthcare varies immensely between them. For example, in France, I can see any doctor I choose for whatever procedure I choose and I am generally reimbursed 70% of the costs by the national heathcare system. Since everyone has this, healthcare system costs are kept down, and a visit to a GP costs €25, pre-reimbursement. For terminally ill patients, or those with very costly medical requirements, the system covers 100% of their costs. If I want better coverage than the government plan, I can purchase private 'top-up' insurance.

As a contrast, Switzerland has a system similar to the US where all health insurance is provided by private insurers, and it is compulsory for citizens to purchase insurance. I bring this up because their system is nowhere near 'free' or 'rationed' as you imply, and works quite well. More info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Healthcare_in_Switzerland

What is evil is when workers agree on a 4x10 (4 days, 10 hours per day, per week) schedule and union says no (4x10 is better for the environment and everybody?! tough).

Evil is union forcing a strike when the majority is against it. (and this happens A LOT) So much for the wish of the majority.

Evil is union supporting the slackers and making sure the guy that barely does his job, or doesn't at all stays in the company.

If thats what you're dealing with, then it sounds like theres something wrong with your union. The union exists to give some bulk bargaining power to its members - so if the majority of its members want a 4x10 schedule, then thats what the union should advocate.

Here in France, there tend to be multiple unions workers can join. At Airbus, for example, there are three unions - one large, one medium, and one small. So if you're dissatisfied with the conditions/politics/etc of one, there are others that you can join. As a result of widespread union activity in France, working conditions are typically very good, with generous vacation time and benefits.

I think you've misinterpreted the implications of Flatland. Those were 2D beings existing in a 3D world. So they were blind of anything outside their plane of existence. If we were similar to them, I would only be able to resolve one plane at a time - e.g. if I focus on my desktop, that would be the only plane that 'exists' to me, nothing behind, above or below. But I can see my desktop and the floor all at the same time, therefore I can see three dimensions.

However one implication from the book for humans is that we are 3D creatures living in a 4D world. We only see one plane in 'time' - that is, we only see the present. If we were to encounter a 4D creature, it would be able to do things that, to us, would seem like magic, jumping in and out of the present, etc.

The dig-dug example is similar to what happens in Flatland. You as a player can see all the details of the 2D world because you see in 3D - that is you exist in a plane above the 2D dig-dug world. If you were to put yourself in the mind of the dig-dug character, however, the details of the rest of the dig-dug world would be obscured to you.

Some control panels have OSX-like functionality, i.e., the control panel appears in the same window as the control panel directory, with a somewhat standardized appearance. But others retain the old WinXP functionality, i.e. the control panel pops up in a new window (e.g. System, Folder Views, etc). Seems really sloppy to have both going on. Yeah, you're right - I said metabolize when I should have said atrophy. The point I was trying to make is that if calories are drastically reduced, your body will sacrifice any unneeded muscle mass before fat. It'll hang on to the fat as long as it can, since that is essentially its energy stores. This applies to equally bodybuilders and non-bodybuilders, which is why everytime I see these ultra-low calorie diets, I fail to see the long term benefit.

Ah, thats good to know. Next time I want to get really ripped, I'll just stop exercising, and let my body metabolize all my fat, while the muscles are left untouched. No wonder its so easy for bodybuilders to get ready for contests, you know, with the ultra low-carb pre-contest diets, and insane amounts of cardio, on top of all the thermogenics they take. They just do that for shits and giggles. Oh wait, you have no idea what you're talking about.

Muscle is generally the first to go, because unlike fat, maintaining muscle is very calorie expensive. Therefore, in a highly reduced calorie situation, your body metabolizes excess muscle first to bring down your overall resting calorie consumption, in essence, making your body more calorie efficient.

Whats so hard to understand about that?

If you RTFA, you'll see this - "One of my peers in Arizona recently accompanied a group of scientists and engineers from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on a geological field trip. During the day, he asked how many would be willing to go on a one-way mission into space. Every member of the group raised his hand. The lure of space travel remains intoxicating for a generation brought up on âoeStar Trekâ and âoeStar Wars.â" Seems to me like it wouldnt be too hard to find people willing to go.

Isn't it possible that this could pay off in a big way? For example, the astronauts sent there could make some huge discovery (economically valuable minerals, life, etc), which would cause NASA to drastically increase their exploration budget and probably attract alot of private industry's attention as well (think Gold Rush type scenario). The point is, given a groundbreaking discovery, the astronauts arent likely to be alone on Mars for too long.

You're correct that Methane is a more potent greenhouse gas than CO2. And water vapor is even more potent than either of those. But the reason we're focusing on CO2 is that it has a much longer atmospheric lifetime than water vapor or methane.

A parcel of air can hold only so much water vapor - once the air is saturated, the water tends to condense and form clouds or precipitate out.

Methane is a bit more complicated, but suffice it to say, if all methane production were to stop tomorrow, methane levels would return to their equilibrium point in 10-20 years.

With CO2, if all production were stopped tomorrow, it would take 100-1000 years for CO2 levels to reach their equilibrium point. This is why CO2 is the most worrying greenhouse gas. Anything we put into the atmosphere, we're stuck with for a long time.
