  1. Virus scanning software on Ask Carl Kadie About Censorship and Privacy at Colleges · · Score: 1

There are a few theoretical issues in regards to virus software running on a mail server. This I am thinking would be more important in the case of a University Mail server due to the extremely large number of computers and the diverse user knowledge base. Another issue is some students write programs, some need to send these to their account to get them home. Some students (there are always some) that wish to push the boundaries, Kevin Mitnick abused his position as a student at a local college, and abuse the system setup to provide everyone with the facilities to do their job.

My question is when running a mail server to clean attachments of viruses what should be done.
    1. Should this email be sent back to the sender and request the virus be cleaned and try sending again.
    2. Should this email be cleaned and hope the integrity of the document is not compromised
    3. Should the body of the email be sent to the recipient and tell them to request a clean attachment from sender 4. Delete all attachments

Now there are always some people apposed to all points. Either takes too long, or they can't get their work done with these practices and so forth.

This was just a personal ponder and not related to my current employer.

  2. domain names on Naughty Words in Domains · · Score: 1

I was not allowed to get a .org.au of my domain name because the registra thought it was too much overhead to have it in both the .org and the .org.au domain lists. He said i should have au.organisation.org or something similar. So it does not supprise me one bit that its hard to get swear words through. Hopefully one day Robert Elz will no longer be the sole admin for the .org.au domain space and will let people have the right to do what they wish. Why can greenpeace have both .org and .org.au?

Char Davies created real time VR environments such as "OSMOSE" http://www.immersence.com/

To date i have not personally seen artists use VR environments to the next level. With realism. Could you imagine steping into an environment such as 13th floor or Matrix where you have real people to interact with. I know this is different but it is still an achievable goal.

JarJar the evil character had cloth. He was the first CG actor interacting with Live ones. When Cloth and Hair improves we will be able to see more CG actors. Good or bad thing? At least in the crow where the actor dies they can finish the story.

Antz, "bugs life" and "toy story" were the major CG movies ATM "Monters inc" comming soon will have a monster which looks like an abonable snow man full of hair. Water is another CG killer thats why that perfect storm movie recieved awards even though it was boring as hell.

  5. Why .xxx wont happen. on Neither .Kids Nor .Porn For ICANN · · Score: 1

There are a few reasons why .xxx wont happen. As many people have already pointed out. ".xxx" is easy to filter. So why would people move from a very hard to filter ".com" to a very easy ".xxx"? Yes you might say that legislation will be put in place to make sure operators user this format however some countries may not follow suit so they will just move to a more "friendly" country for their sites. Alot of people have paid alot of money for their 'nice' domain names "girlz.com" or something similar. If they were then forced to move from their current home to an easily filtered one, they will then lose prime property. It might not be a matter of promoting the dark side of the web however a matter of non acceptance . I can see it now "man why you got a porn site without a .xxx domain" "because i dont have to" BTW will playboy move to .xxx or since they are a big company will they be .com? Wonder who will would be the first to get x.xxx ?

I believe that toshiba is in the same boat. However you do have to have a boot password in the first place. These are hard to sync with central passwords so they can become a pain. Guess you have to way up security with convience. I have seen USB public key devices these could be useful for laptops. We lock away all our laptops in the tech room however this doesnt help the staff who keep them on their desks and NEVER take them home.

  7. Disabled users, security on Speech Recognition, Voice Verification -- Free · · Score: 1

Personally I think free, open sourced software is the first step of many to have fully interactive machines for all members of society. We of course then need to have /dev/speech and other items so that the computer can then talk back.

When most people have some sort of entertainment device running off their computers (be it DVD, CD, VCD or even your automated front door) it would be of great advantage to have voice activation of these devices. A number of home stereos now have voice activation why not the computer? It maybe easy for most people to press a remote or something but what about the people who have troubles doing this.

At my UNI there are some doors with ethernet plugs in them to the toilet. At present you have to press a button on the wall to open these doors. This could possibly give another option. If there was access to a cheap voice activation system that worked this could then be done by more mobility challenged people. (just a personal observation)

One of the security authentication options is what you are. Speech is definitely one option for this. So in the future we may have a viable way of logging into your computer via voice. Which then given other authentication options could create a cheap secure option for most companies.

Bleh, its too early for me to think so ill leave it at that.

It should be enough however companies like Microsoft have got big slabs of the pie early (i might be mistaken but that was my understanding). Also if we want to get every appliance in the house/garden on the net it might be pushing it, but is an average of 2.2*10^20 addresses per square centimetre overkill?

    RE: Address assignment
