I know Europe is a wonderland of homogeneity safety but even so, the entire point of SWATing is to create a high tension situation where the police have been told there is an active shooter.
I've read the article but a) I don't even think this an effective tactic on their part and b) most of the points whether intended as a distraction or not I agree with. but At the moment the republicans are ripe for a compromise on net neutrality. Conflating these two things may very well play into the hands of those advocating for net neutrality if they can exploit Trump's current ire about "de-platforming". You can argue that the two are unrelated but if you actually want to get something done: "You're concerned about deplatforming and protecting communication on the internet Mr President? So are we, let's talk." -Might well be very effective.
I'm aware that they are crafting a narrative and are exploiting the current storm around the various platforms but that doesn't mean that I disagree with the talking points. Sure it's a "hey look over there!" tactic but "over there" is somewhere I think we should be looking.
Agreed. It seems a very tricky thing to get right but I don't see how you can avoid implementing some sort of protections for folks at the platform level.
Generally I prefer the awareness of people today. It is harder to control an entire population through broadcast media these days and I think that for the good. I just want guys to start taking their damn hats off when they are indoors again and not wear flip flops and shorts when going out to eat...
Chromebooks actually remind me a bit of Macbooks. You have an "app store" but not a proper official repository which is the primary reason I always seem to be overwriting osx and installing Linux. I could just be biased against osx but to me in a lot of ways... Mac is to Unix as Chromebooks are to Linux.
Please. I work a farm. It's a much more dangerous job than being a soldier. "I signed up to risk life and limb to provide you with the food you eat". You see how that sounds? You're a tool for neocons and globalist "liberals". I wouldn't do too much chest thumping. Thanks for securing the petro dollar.
There are still criminals but you tend to have some connection to them. They aren't coming from some "other" group so there is something of an exasperated sense kinship still between the criminal and the victim... In my neck of the woods for example we had this somewhat amusing story a few days ago link
I think this likely more a reflection of overreacting immune system responses in people these days. There must be some environmental triggers for all these autoimmune issues.. it doesn't seem reasonable that we would have retained such problems under evolutionary pressure.
Yeah that number looked like it was off by a factor 10 to me. Let's take a look at this quote you included though:
The US tops the list of countries with the most guns, owning about half the world's guns while making up only 5% of the world population.
. If homicide rates in the US are par with other countries and the US has an uncountable number of guns compared to other countries, is the assertion that the US is such a paradise that sans guns we would have almost no homicide or is the assertion that sans guns we might have 5% less homicide? I'm not sure how you articulate a good argument for gun control if you accept the quote above.
You're just being petulant. That is opinion/editorialization and not data on Snopes' part. With a smaller population Norway naturally will have fewer opportunities for violence but Norway again is one of 10 countries with a higher rate than the US. Even if inclined to give you Norway, Lynwood is still correct.
I agree with you to a certain extend but those of European decent tend to commit alcohol fueled crimes disproportionately to other groups. This is true whatever area of the globe they are located. Those of Sub Saharan African decent tend to commit homicide at higher numbers. There are assholes in any broad racial group but pretending that differences do not exist between groups is nonsense. Ignoring those differences and then trying to lay those crimes at the feet of some third variable isn't a responsible way to approach the problem.
That would be a difficult position to defend since the primary reason for the second amendment was to defend oneself from an oppressive federal government. I think it a much easier argument that with a standing army... the second amendment (preserving as much potential for force as possible with the people) is of even more importance.
The US is safer than most of the world not just Venezuela. There are 320 million people in the US. That's almost half the population of the entire continent of Europe. There will always be violence somewhere in the US but half of that is strictly black on black inner city violence. When you exclude the black population, we're as safe as ye ol countries of Scandinavia.

I think you would be hard pressed to find a people higher than those of Western European decent in empathy.

It seems reasonable to liken the platforms to "county roads" and the ISP to the interstate highway system.

I'm... actually on the side of the lobbyist talking points on this. Someone care to educate me where they are wrong?
This is essentially the same story as on may 25th slashdot

Amusingly, "white left" seems to be one of the favorites slurs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baizuo

I'm afraid this is not what the data indicates. London homicide rate is on par with NY even though New York tends toward guns as the preferred weapon.
actual data Note the shooting deaths in EU vs US.

The only legal self defense item you can buy in the UK is a rape alarm
The population of the UK rose by a total of 6.6 million between 2000 and 2016. The latest research shows that just over 80% of this increase was due to immigration - that is to say new immigrants and their UK-born children.
