  1. Re:Oblig. on Charlton Heston's Impact On Sci-Fi · · Score: 1

And here it seems to be the opposite. When I talk about the possibility of a black president, more republicans seem to be open to that (depending of course on the black person!) than Democrats. Here it seems to be Hillary Uber Alles. which furthers the point that you can't lump the country into 2 parties. Many of the dems in the south tend to be fiscal liberals (working class that feels the dems economic views favor them) and social conservatives (tend to oppose abortion, etc).

I tend be more socially liberal and fiscally conservative. I tend to vote democrat though since the government is going to take your money no matter what.

This all may be true, but I think you are forgetting the fact that the dems and reps have gone through major role reversals throughout history. There have been times in history where the republicans have been the liberals and democrats the conservatives. To compare either party to its 100 yr old counterpart is ludicrous.

I live in the deep south and I can attest to the fact that people that are overwhelmingly racist and for less gun control are republican. but this is not cut and dry either as I am a democrat but favor less gun control myself. to lump our country's achievements, mistakes and views to those of two cut and dry parties just doesn't work

No, no! Its a multiplier so it would have 4th life. Which raises the question of what happened to 3rd life?

Which is why I will be producing the new online sensation "5th Life: Search for 3rd Life"

Dont even get me started on the currency conversion.

As an IT student and worker I can honestly say that professional dress can make or break you.

I just left our career fair at my school, I was there only 40 minutes (I only wanted to talk to 2 consulting firms),
and I wore a tailored blue blazer, shirt, tie and slacks and I have to say the people I spoke to were paying me much
more attention than some of my IT class mates who showed up in polo shirts a khakis (some even in jeans =X). The people that do
hiring / promoting are NOT tech people they want you to look professional and be able to talk basic business.

There are a couple of GQ reading guys that are in my IT program that always try to look our best (we are also at the top of our class, the first to get internships and the first to get top job offers)
Combine this with a solid skill set and good personality and you are set to work doing *WHATEVER* you want.
Want to get down and dirty, you'll have no problem finding a programming or dev job, want to stay on the technical side but dabble in management then you might find yourself being offered project leads, or you may even be asked to go to the dark side of management.

Bottom line spend a few hundred $ on a business wardrobe, keep your skills sharp and be personable (but not a suck-up) and you'll be amazed at how quickly and often doors will open.

  7. Re:@_@ on Followup On Java As "Damaging" To Students · · Score: 1

One thing I think that should be pointed out is that most schools use 'Computer Science', 'Information Technology', and 'Information Systems' interchangeably. Anyone in one of the programs knows the difference but, you're average person will just know that you are a 'technology' major. Even my roommates in college could never remember exactly what my major was.

So, learning Java as a primary language may be just fine for an IS major who will be writing end user business apps. This person will not be designing drivers, OS's or any similar project.

As an Info. Tech. major I chose mainly to focus on knowledge management and information retrieval. I took one basic intro class using C and took extensive Java classes (the C class came after Java). The rest of my courses included ones in Data Mining, JSP, Database Design, IR, SQL, and DSS. (I have since followed up on C on my own)

Now the CS major should definitely have an understanding of a low level language like C. Having this working machine knowledge is exactly what separates CS from other tech majors.

A better understanding of each of these different, but similar fields would also help when looking at what courses to offer.
